PFT’s Week Two 2021 power rankings

1. Buccaneers (1-0, Last week No. 1): The Bucs should abandon the blitzes and revert to the true Tampa Two scheme.

2. Chiefs (1-0, No. 2): For the Chiefs, it’s never over until it’s over.

3. Rams (1-0, No. 5): It will get harder and harder for Sean McVay to praise Matthew Stafford without necessarily throwing shade at Jared Goff.

4. Saints (1-0, No. 9): Death, taxes, and the Saints under Sean Payton having a damn good football team.

5. Steelers (1-0, No. 14): The names of the players change. The identity of the coach doesn’t. Barring injury, we should never assume the Steelers won’t be good enough to win most of their games.

6. Bills (0-1, No. 3): They need to shrug Week One off quickly; a dangerous Miami trip is looming.

7. Browns (0-1, No. 6): You can’t consistently single cover Tyreek Hill and expect to beat Kansas City.

8. Chargers (1-0, No. 8): Brandon Staley checks the first box on his way to a potential coach of the year award.

9. 49ers (1-0, No. 11): The Trey Lance train continues to be derailed.

10. Seahawks (1-0, No. 12): Copy and paste Steelers entry here. Change name of team.

11. Ravens (0-1, No. 7): “The Browns is the Browns” no longer applies. “The Ravens is the Ravens” possibly no longer applies, either.

12. Dolphins (1-0, No. 16): Victory from the jaws of defeat is still victory.

13. Patriots (0-1, No. 10): Defeat from the jaws of victory is still defeat.

14. Cardinals (1-0, No. 25): They’ll go as far as Kyler and Chandler will take them.

15. Packers (0-1, No. 4): When playing games in California and Florida, this team fails to show up, far too often.

16. Cowboys (0-1, No. 17): It was the best loss the Cowboys have had in years.

17. Raiders (1-0, No. 21): The reward for beating the Ravens? A one-way ticket to Pittsburgh, with Jon Gruden taking on his former pupil, Mike Tomlin.

18. Broncos (1-0, No. 23): They may not be ready to be contenders, but they’re on their way to being relevant, for the first time in a long time.

19. Titans (0-1, No. 13): Aberration or trend? A trip to Seattle will shed more light on that one.

20. Panthers (1-0, No. 24): Sam Darnold was once again on the field for the latest Jets loss. For a change, he wasn’t one of the people sulking.

21. Bengals (1-0, No. 29): If Joe Burrow stays healthy, the AFC North will be the best division in football.

22. Washington (0-1, No. 15): Fitzmagic or Fitztragic; there’s no middle ground.

23. Vikings (0-1, No. 18): It could be another long year for the Vikings, who seem to think they’re better than they really are.

24. Colts (0-1, No. 19): They’ve got four more tough games before they get any type of a break.

25. Eagles (1-0, No. 28): Jalen Hurts looks good so far. We’ll see if he can sustain it against better defenses.

26. Bears (0-1, No. 20): Chicago’s plan for keeping Justin Fields under wraps would work way better if they had no home games.

27. Giants (0-1, No. 22): Same as it ever is.

28. Texans (1-0, No. 32): Tyrod Taylor, when healthy, is a much better quarterback than widely believed.

29. Falcons (0-1, No. 26): It absolutely, positively won’t get there overnight.

30. Jets (0-1, No. 30): They need to do everything they can to protect Zach Wilson. Even that may not be good enough.

31. Lions (0-1, No. 31): They showed remarkable resilience after falling behind 38-10. Let’s not let that obscure the fact that they fell behind 38-10.

32. Jaguars (0-1, No. 27): Jimmy Johnson or Steve Spurrier? Suddenly, some are wondering whether Urban Meyer will be the next Bobby Petrino.

  1. What is the continued fascination with the Ravens? #11? Who just lost to your #17 team last night? With a QB who throws for 200 yards per game and consistently turns it over when it matters and can’t make the right reads and hit wide open receivers? I get that it’s fun to watch Lamar play, but when do we take the blinders off and just look at the actual facts. He can’t win in the playoffs- fact. He can’t throw against good defenses- fact. He is regressing very quickly from his MVP performance 2 years ago- fact. He’s not an elite QB, period. Fun to watch, far from elite, and not a QB who can win a Super Bowl, let alone multiple playoff games.

  2. Florio giving the Raiders some respect but he’s right tough Pittsburgh team awaits us Sunday…. RN4L

  3. Looks about right for week 1.

The Saints & Steelers are better than I thought they’d be. Both will be tough outs all year.

The Bills bought their offseason hype. No focus in week 1. They need to come out against Miami like their season depends on it.

  4. The Jaguars change GM’s, coaches, players and stay the worst team in the league. The one constant is Shad Khan, the worst owner in the NFL.

  5. The entire NFC West will be 2-0 come Monday. Also – Cardinals too low after that smoke job on a decent Titans squad.

  6. NFC West has all four teams in top 15 but if Joe Burrow stays healthy the AFC North will be the best division in the NFL? Is that common core math?!?

  7. I give Jason Garrett 1 more week as OC and with the talent he has on offense if he can’t put the ball in the end zone ,bye bye ,then I go bye bye and hire Doug Pederson !

  8. Eagles deserve to be ranked higher. They dominated a bad team on the road and were underdogs going in. The so called experts don’t want to admit they are clueless.

  9. One game and dudes are saying stuff like, “ The Saints & Steelers are better than I thought they’d be. Both will be tough outs all year.” Lmao

  10. If the Raiders beat Pittsburg sunday they will find a way to make them drop a few spots in the rankings. Cant tell me right now the pats, cowboys and the 3 point packers are better

  11. Is anyone surprised that Urban Meyer is going to have a rough time in the NFL? Trevor Lawrence just might get lost in the shuffling deck over there in Jax.

  12. I don’t agree that the AFCN maybe the best division in football if Burrow stays healthy but for those wondering why here’s how the logic works. First ITS WEEK ONE. Glad for the 4-0 record our west but any given Sunday. Two the implication is that on balance the teams playing in the AFCN might not have the same record but are better teams or played better better teams to that record. Not hard to get. Frankly if not for the Brady love (no way they’re #1 they barely beat a 8.5 point underdog) the AFC may still be the stronger conference. So like in the 80s when it was the AFC that put forth a sacrificial lamb for most of it it’s plausible that a worse team in the NFC could have better record than a better AfC team. That’s the logic.

  13. You know you’re in Bizarro World when out of all the NFC North teams, only the Lions looked like they were ready for the season.

  14. Sadness: Bills, Packers, Titans.
    Happiness: Steelers, Browns, Raiders.
    Overrated: Texas A&M.
    Underrated: Penn State.

  15. The Lions almost came back to beat team #9…..you will soon realize that they are much better than people are giving them credit for. IGNORE THEM AT YOUR PERIL!!!

    ROAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! #ONEPRIDE

  16. It’s time for the Ravens to take a look in the mirror and sign Cam Newton. We all like him and are rooting for him but Lamar Jackson just may not be the answer. Cam may take this team to the Super Bowl.

  17. Obviously these rankings are pointless, but as a Seahawk fan who can’t stand the Cardinals, having the Cards at 14 is weird. They beat the brakes off the Titans in Tennessee.

  18. I admit I enjoy these power rankings even though I know they are pointless. But there is absolutely no validity to them at all before around week 4. A few years back my Chiefs crushed New England and the Brady is done talk was everywhere. But in the end we lost in the playoffs yet again and Brady was hoisting the Lombardi. Any team can have a crap week. Especially early. In the end the cream rises.

They almost came back? They also almost lost by 16 instead of 8. I am certainly rooting for Detroit to make a turnaround but don’t for a second think anyone believes the Lions only lost that game by 8 points.

  20. “The Trey Lance train continues to be derailed.” How can you say that? He’s not the starter, so it’s not like he blew the game.

He played some situational football and got his 1st touchdown in the NFL. To me, that sounds like a train that just started its’ engine and is waiting “to depart the station”.

I hope this was a bad joke.

  22. “3. Rams (1-0, No. 5): It will get harder and harder for Sean McVay to praise Matthew Stafford without necessarily throwing shade at Jared Goff.”

The Rams with Goff made it to the playoffs 3 times in 4 years and made it to a Super Bowl. Anything Stafford achieves that’s short of that is kind of meaningless.

“5. Steelers (1-0, No. 14): The names of the players change. The identity of the coach doesn’t. Barring injury, we should never assume the Steelers won’t be good enough to win most of their games.”

It may be more accurate to say, the identity of the *quarterback* doesn’t, and barring injury *to Ben Roethlisberger*. They’re a much more ordinary team without him.

  23. The NFC West has two legit Super Bowl contenders, a pretend contender, and an old Arizona Cardinals team, hoping to make the playoffs, but in reality will fall apart by mid-season due to injuries.

The AFC North has three pretend Super Bowl contenders and a Bengals team that is better than people think it is, but they’ve gotta string some wins together before I believe in them as a potential playoff team.

    ___________

Falling behind 38-10 looks like you’re ready for the season? Don’t get confused by a garbage time comeback.

  25. Florio logic: I ranked all of the NFC West in the top 15, and 3 of the teams top 10, but the AFC North is the best division

  26. It’s hilarious hearing the hate for Lamar and the Ravens. It’s one game and already the bandwagon fans are jumping off. Give credit to the Raiders and their D-Line. They completely abused the Ravens O-Line. It directly contributed to both of Lamar’s fumbles. Wouldn’t have mattered who was playing QB behind that line, they would have been running for their life. If they don’t get that O-line figured out then it is going to be a very long season for their fans. Lamar on the other hand is going to be just fine.

  27. The Bills just aren’t that good because a lot of teams ranked lower than the Steelers (e.g. Browns/Ravens/Et al.) would beat the Steelers by 20 points. Big Ben and his sweet, sweet, 16 points of offense are in for a long year. Did everyone seriously forget the playoff game against the Browns last year?

  28. Not sure if anyone watched the game but the Dolphins just beat the Pats and the zebras at home. They led the ENTIRE game and forced that fumble with 3:35 left to play. Even if they Pats scored on that drive Miami had plenty of time to come right back. After all they were able do close out the game moving the ball on offense just fine.

  29. I don’t understand the fascination with giving the cowboys credit…

    – Tampa Bay turned the ball over 4 times to Dallas’ one

    – Dallas won time of possession by over 9 minutes

Still Tampa Bay won… Dallas didn’t play to Tampa’s level… Tampa played to Dallas’… Seems like a never ending story

  30. This is accurate, and entertaining. #20 made me laugh out loud.
#27 made me laugh, and then cry…although after so many years of bad football the tears have nearly run dry.

  31. I don’t see how 49ers almost lose to Detroit and they jump up above Seattle who handled a better team than Detroit…that seems odd.

  32. You never want to give the Saints the benefit of the doubt when they’re not starting or like now don’t have Drew Brees and yet it’s been proven every single time that Sean Payton can win with someone else’s castoff under center.

He’s not underrated but he’s still probably the most underrated coach in the NFL.

  33. Packers in the top half seems about right, I see them moving on from this week’s blowout loss.
