Taylor Heinicke believes he has earned the right to start the rest of the season

Taylor Heinicke was only Washington’s starting quarterback on Thursday Night Football because Ryan Fitzpatrick is injured, but after Washington beat the Giants, Heinicke said he thinks he has earned the starting job for good.

Michael Irvin asked Heinicke on NFL Network after the game, “Do you believe, with the job that you’ve done here, that you have earned the right to start at quarterback for the Washington Football Team the rest of the year?”

“I do, and I have confidence that I can do it,” Heinicke answered. “So if those guys in the locker room and the facility believe in me, that’s all that matters, and I believe they do.”

Heinicke has only started two regular-season games and one postseason game in his NFL career, but he said he has years of experience of planning to start.

“Even as a backup, I prepared every week like I was the starter,” Heinicke said.

For now, Fitzpatrick’s hip injury means Washington coach Ron Rivera doesn’t have to pick between his two quarterbacks. But Heinicke believes Rivera should pick him.

  1. We got to give it to Taylor Heinicke…he has taken advantage of every opportunity the WFT has given him over the past 2 seasons. Not bad for an undrafted QB out of Old Dominion, that has bounced around the league the past 6 seasons.

  2. I’d say he played the QB position at least as well Daniel Jones last night but if the skins would’ve lost his late int would’ve been the turning point.

I could not believe what I was seeing with Redskins defensive line last night though.

Playing against the Giants backup olinemen on what was already a bad oline, the skins got relatively little push at the line of scrimmage. They allowed Jones to run for nearly 100 yards. That’s a 1/4th of last year’s total in 1 game.

  3. The kid is very good and confident. When I watched him play last year I thought some team should trade for him. Let’s see how he plays the next couple games, if he falters you bring in Fitzmagic when he returns.

  4. He frankly wasn’t very much different than Fitz. He played well enough and apart from that one late Int, put his team in position to score and win throughout. Granted it was against the Giants Swiss cheese defense. I mean, who are they going to go get that will pick up the offense and be a better starter right now?

  5. It seems Heinicke does not show well in practice but he balls out in a game. He is one of “those” guys.

  6. If this guy was a first round pick, no one would be questioning anything and the media would be crowning him already. But because he took the long route, many are doubting him and asking if he is even a starter in the league. Dude can play! You can see flashes throughout every one of his games. Dwayne Haskins was a first rounder and pretty much never flashed anything. Let Heinicke get first team reps for awhile to get down his timing and accuracy with the receivers and get more game time under his belt, and this guy could be the answer for WFT for many years to come. He’s got it all!

  7. Taylor played great. He’ll learn from that last pick. The vaunted WFT defense was MIA though. You can’t give up 29 points to a bottom-5 team. You are playing the Bills next. You can’t rely on Heinicke to score 40 points if the defense is playing that poorly.

  8. I love when they asked those questions to QBs in Heinicke.

Let’s just imagine if he answered it like this:

-I don’t. I threw a pick with almost 2 mins left in the 4th quarter. Clearly I need more confidence in myself, and I hope my team tells me that. Also being that I am a backup, I did not work as hard as Fitz has so I don’t think I have earned the job.-

  9. Heinicke has been a starting-caliber QB since he was a third string QB on the Vikings. He’s just kind of a dumbass off the field… Ask him what you do when you lock yourself out of your apartment.

  10. 100%. It’s abundantly clear that Heinicke has the locker room behind him, and he’s shown that he can play the game at a very high level.

  11. Not a stellar game by any means, looked ok though. Unless he was misquoted, that really was a poor choice of statements for him to make. Fitzpatrick earned the starting position and has many years of experience. Instead of support Taylor throws him under the bus. It would have had a much cleaner impact if was Fitz praising and supporting him instead. Hope Taylor didn’t injure his arm patting himself on the back.

  12. He played really well….until that INT. A competent team would have made that INT cost Washington the game.

To his credit he bounced back strong to put them in position to win.

  13. How is the entire state of NY feeling about its football teams?
    Big, fat 0-4!
All three teams, combined, will end up with 10 wins.

  14. Taylor needs to send a thank you gift to Giants lineman #97 for jumping off sides on the first field goal attempt. Otherwise, he’d be backing up Cam right now.

It’s one game. Let’s see how he does against a team that doesn’t continually self-destruct.

You mean, like against the world champion TB Bucs in the playoffs?

Go ask any starter in the NFL if they think they deserve to be the teams starter. You will get this exact same answer. What you are referring to is called a Beta male. Betas aren’t leaders.

Please!! So people can stop talking about Ron Rivera bringing in Cam Newton!!!
    ———
I dont get your sarcasm, Heinike and Allen are both better than Newton at this point.

  18. The Heinicke story reminds me of another QB who bounced around with NFL teams and the Arena league before an injury to the starter gave him his shot…look at the career of Kurt Warner, not many thought much of him nor did anyone think he would have the career he ended up having once he got his chance.

  19. He should have been their starter in Week 1 he’s way better than Fitzpatrick. No he isn’t Minshew he’s better the wildcard game was a big indicator of this. Washington found a QB.

  20. Nothing wrong with his response. He was asked a pointed question and responded with confidence just like you want your QB to do.

Those that say he should be benched if he comes out and has a bad game??? would you have scrapped Peyton Manning after his horrible rookie season?

This kid should be allowed to develop in a starting roll. He has shown flashes since he was with the Vikings, and they should have kept him

He just needs a coach with enough guts to roll with an undrafted QB. He has that IT factor that cannot be quantified but is so very important in the best QBs.

  21. Alright buddy calm down…..u only beat the giants. Admittedly you looked much better than i thought u would be and i believe your a better option than fitz….even when healthy…. But still it was only the giants

  22. I thought it was disrespectful to just give Fitz the job and not let him and Taylor compete for the job. Now there is no reason to not start Taylor if he pays like he did last night sans that int for the foreseeable future.

  23. His INT should have been a handoff to Gibson. I’m not sure how Scott Turner is escaping blame for that play call. Gibson was running well and effective.

Let’s all enjoy the “Linsanity” while it lasts.

  24. Based on beating the Giants ??

    At home…

    On Short rest ..

Barely because on an offsides penalty ?????????

That being said… I won a Youth football game this weekend here in Orlando Florida…

I believe I’ve earned the right to be Commissioner of the NFL.

  25. Please, I like the kid but let’s string a few good performances together before we get carried away, u have a full month or 2 to show the world what you got, use it man be humble and just work hard

  26. Having Fitzmagic available to come off the bench is probably a better way to go anyway, it seems to be when he does his best work.

..umm…see playoffs last year vs. the Bucs…

  28. Am I the only one who wasn’t impressed. His accuracy is trash. Matter of time before he gets McLaurin laid out.

  29. kid has done nothing but answer the bell when needed – I’ll enjoy the ride and cheer him on. Enough of the Cam silliness. Keep proving the critics wrong Taylor – we of ODU still believe in you!

  30. Remember how Josh Allen looked for his first 2 1/2 years? Lots of people thought he was a bust. He wasn’t accurate, and according to some “experts”, that wasn’t fixable. But, Allen was the #7 overall pick, so the people who traded away all that draft capital for Allen, had a lot on the line, so he was given enough time to fully mature into a great QB. Free agents and late round picks don’t get the same opportunity, so they usually have to rely on an injury, like Kurt Warner did. A lot of HOFers had really bad first and second seasons. If they hadn’t been first round picks, they wouldn’t have been around for that second season.
