Although 38-year-old running back Frank Gore has not officially retired, he’s looking into a post-football career in boxing.

Gore told Ian Rapoport of NFL.com that boxing training is going well enough that he might be in the ring soon.

“I’ve been training for both — football and boxing,” Gore said. “I’ve always loved boxing, so that’s what I’ve been doing. And we’re trying to make a fight happen. If we do that, you’ll see me in the ring.”

Gore, who played for the Jets last year, is still open to a return to the NFL. But he said boxing has been a good challenge for him.

“I just fell in love with how hard it is,” Gore said. “I felt like ‘Man, I couldn’t fight.’ And I always like a challenge. So I kept doing it and doing it and I saw myself getting better and better.”

Boxing has recently seen a boom in fights involving retired athletes, celebrities and former fighters looking for another payday. Those fights don’t exactly make for great displays of boxing, but they have made some people some money. So it wouldn’t be surprising to see Gore put on the gloves some day soon.

  1. Like he hasnt taken enough blows to the head and body already. Become an awesome golfer or fisherman Frank! Heck try pool its really hard too when you get advanced I enjoy it a lot myself.

  2. Someone should tell him the story about when Jim Brown wanted to become a boxer. Muhammad Ali got wind of this and called Jim Brown(a close friend of Muhammad Ali) and asked him to come to his training facility in Cherry Hill N.J.. Muhammad Ali said let’s go for a walk and they went to a nearby park several blocks away. At one point Muhammad Ali turns toJim Brown and says “hit me as hard as you can”. Jim Brown tried to punch Ali for about a minute but couldn’t touch him-that was the beginning and the end of Jim Brown’s boxing career. My dad loved boxing and I learned a lot about boxing-it ain’t easy.

Gore wouldnt be getting in the ring against top or formerly retired boxers he would be getting in the ring against other people at his level of experience and competition.

  4. Going from a sport trying to cut concussions out of the arena to a sport where giving concussions is the idea. A very bad idea.

  5. Great for him! I hope he does very well and has a great time studying the sweet science. I love an older guy trying to pick up the fight game in his later years. What a great story. Teddy Roosevelt would be very proud of ol Frank!

  6. Gore is an all time iron man, one of the toughest to lace em up. I wouldn’t bet against him in the squared circle.

  7. Just not a wise decision…. Sure, train like a boxer but stay out of the fight club…. More blows to the head are NOT what you need
Love Frank & hope he gets back on the field instead!!
