Bill Belichick declines to comment on Alex Guerrero’s criticism of the handling of Tom Brady

Alex Guerrero, not Tom Brady, had some pointed comments earlier this week about the manner in which Patriots coach Bill Belichick mishandled Brady. Belichick understandably was asked about it on Friday during his most recent press conference.

“I appreciate the question,” Belichick said, his standard response to questions he doesn’t really appreciate. “I know there’s a lot of interest for obvious reasons in next week’s game, but we’re focused on Saints here, and on Monday we’ll get to next week.”

Technically, that means that he should be asked the question again next week. Chances are that, if he is, he’ll find another way to avoid the topic.

The truth is that, like plenty of other coaches, Belichick believes that positive reinforcement will make a player soft or complacent. Thus, praise is withheld no matter the player’s accomplishments. Until he retires or becomes an opponent.

Next week, Belichick undoubtedly will praise Brady. Criticism would serve only to rile him up. No, Belichick will go over the top in his praise of Brady, possibly talking about how emotional it will be for Brady to be back. And hopeful that Brady will have that emotion keep him from being at the top of his game.

That was indeed one of the concerns about Brady during his time with the Patriots, that if he became too emotional in a given game it possibly would affect him in a negative way. The Patriots hope that Brady will be emotional, that the emotions will knock him a little wobbly.

Regardless, don’t expect Belichick to respond to Guerrero’s comments, next week or ever.

  1. Absolutely zero credibility when a guy questions the recipe for 6 super bowl wins, unless the guy is looking for a career as a tabloid writer. If anything, all I get out of this is Brady might have put the word out that this is going to be his final season, and those who have leeched onto Brady for all these years are starting to look for something else to do.

  2. the recipe for 6 super bowl wins,

    ————————

The recipe is building a offense with cheap receivers, which completely depends on QB’s football IQ to get rid of football a little quicker, so that when the ball reaches the intended receiver, the receiver has extra space of 2 to 3 yards.

  3. Seth Wickersham’s book on the Patriots Dynasty is coming out soon…it’s possible that Team Brady is trying to get ahead of the narrative.

  4. I love the word “evolved” from Guerrero. Only 1 person changed and had the ego explosion with all the antics looking for outrageous special treatment was granted some of it.

Only idiots would back Guerrero and his snake oil salesman garbage, pretending he has a leg to stand on.

Thr fact this little dweeb even has a platform is a problem.

You might be on to something. That sounds like what Joe Gibbs did while winning 3 super bowls with three different QB’s. None are HOFers. It was the best recipe, and guess who one of the defensive coordinators trying to stop it was? NY Giants D-Coordinator Bill Belichick. It was an offense that didn’t depend on a HOF QB. Belichick probably figured of he couldn’t stop it with that Giants’ defense, nobody could stop it. Smart people borrow from other successful people, and nobody did more without a HOF QB than Joe Gibbs. Strange that Gibbs doesn’t get more respect. He’s by far the best NFL coach ever.

  6. I think BB can be surly and disagreeable at times without any real cause. That being said, if I was him and any person in this fashion really kindve took a shot at his overall process I think I’d either laugh or not say a word. He’s got enough trophies on the mantle to rebuke this kind of thing from a former athletic trainer who has whatever role now in the TB business set up. Should just eat the fine and say who the bleep cares what he has to say or say nothing at all

  7. So BB is taking the high road while Brady sits back and lets some nobody mouthpieces air some dirt.

This is a bad look for Tom.

  8. Taking a cheap shot at Belichick because you’re still bitter about not being allowed to be part of the band is childish. Next Sunday night’s game just got more exciting.

  9. Brady looking worse and worse by the day. It’s very clear why BB and Kraft walked. Very clear.

  10. It was a concern of the Patriots when Brady was there that if Brady became emotional in a particular game it could negatively affect him? Huh? I’ve never heard anything even remotely like that. It doesn’t even make any sense.

  11. BB is and always will be the best HC to ever be on the sidelines.
And this clown running his mouth for Brady should not even be getting headlines. People can say what they want but the Pats and Brady do not win all those SBs without BB.
You can’t possibly think that the only reason they won was because of Brady. It was a team effort ans that is the one thing that BB has ALWAYS stood by and built that dynasty around TEAM EFFORT!!!!
Brady won a SB with Tampa with a bought and paid for team. That and one silly hail mary at the end of a half.

  12. BB has simple rules:
    1. Put the team first
    2. Do your job
    3. Speak for yourself

Look at #3…and AG questions why BB didn’t want him around? Speaking for Tom is childish and immature. Brady has such a great legs AY, but having both Daddy and AG speak for him this week makes him look like a chump.

  13. It was an offense that didn’t depend on a HOF QB

    charliecharger,

Sorry, Belichick needed top offense for first round bye, and 2 winning drives in SB, and score 24 or more in back to back playoff games.

  14. charliecharger,

Check how WFT defense performed in playoff. Belichick’s defense was nothing compared to Gibbs defense, and Gibbs gave his QB much better play makers.

  15. Why should he respond to a trainer? He is a 6x champion head coach. Lions don’t worry about the sheep.

  16. “Praise is withheld no matter the player’s accomplishment.” Belichick is always complimentary of his team and players. Watch any super bowl hes won when hes hugging players and telling them how amazing they are and how much he loves them. He doesnt ego inflate but he acknowledges when someone is super smart/experienced, a leader, hardworking rookies on his team.

    *********
Brady is the band, and without Brady, there is no band, just bad music.

  18. Let Brady speak for Brady. Tom is always nothing but class so it is shocking he is so tight with Guerrero. Both Tom and Bill were responsible for the wins there. In Tampa the GM has done a great job of loading the team with talent but in a few years the payments will come due and the Bucs will be on the skids. Bill managed the cap to ensure they could compete for 20 years. I wasn’t in the locker room so I only know what I see from the outside and that’s six Lombardi’s.

  19. Not such a surprise that BB was BB when it comes to “handling” TB12. There have been several (very solid) former Patriots make comments about BB, so it wouldn’t be TB12 “getting out in front of” anything that others have already put out there. It kind of is what it is. Lipstick isn’t going to change it.

  20. For example, from that presser yesterday: Bill Belichick on Patriots wideout Jakobi Meyers: ‘I certainly have a lot of respect for what he’s accomplished’

  21. Belichick is always complimentary of his team and players.

2017 season : But even with all of his unmatched accolades, Brady was still reportedly angry this year for never receiving what amounts to be a pretty trivial title — that of “Patriot of the Week,” an honor bestowed by head coach Bill Belichick — despite leading the race for league MVP.

Face it : Belichick never appreciated Brady, he thought he didn’t need Brady to succeed, that is why he tried to push Brady out after SB 53, so to prove that he could win without Brady. Now he is screwed by his stupidity.

  22. What’s you expect the hoodie to say? Last time i checked Gurrero wasnt a player on his team, therefore NO COMMENT nothing to see here. We’re on to whomever

  23. “But even with all of his unmatched accolades, Brady was still reportedly angry…”

It’s more fun to believe trash like the espn wickersham story this is from im sure for you, just like espns 11/12 balls lie, but it’s similarly untrue.

  24. I’m glad coach scar was asked about this he put it perfect he said that the culture brought everyone alot of success and their are no scared cows in new England.

  25. the culture brought everyone a lot of success

    —————————-

Don’t know who in his right mind will believe such nonsense. Winning 1 or 2 more games? possible. Dynasty? Give me a break.

  26. It’s more fun to believe trash like the espn wickersham story this is from im sure for you, just like espns 11/12 balls lie, but it’s similarly untrue.

Belichick : I’m not putting anybody in Lawrence Taylor’s class.
Profootballtalk : unnamed assistant says Patriots coaches think they could win without Tom Brady
Report: Giants’ Joe Judge, Coaches Rip Tom Brady’s Ability, Tout Patriots System
Bob Quinn : we could win SB with matt patricia

  27. 2017 season : But even with all of his unmatched accolades, Brady was still reportedly angry this year for never receiving what amounts to be a pretty trivial title — that of “Patriot of the Week,” an honor bestowed by head coach Bill Belichick — despite leading the race for league MVP.

If it’s true that Brady was upset, it’s says a whole lot more about his ego then it does about belichick. A 40 year old man who has won 5 Super Bowls , is married to a super model and has millions in the bank is upset about a stupid weekly award? I hope that’s not true, i would hope he’d be more mature than that

  28. If it’s true that Brady was upset, it’s says a whole lot more about his ego.

    ——————————–

Let me ask you this : in his MVP season, Brady never won once “Patriot of the week”. Is it justified? I think this tells you a lot about Belichick’s ego and stupidity.

  29. Belichick would like to thank Guerrero for the Bulletin Board material for week 4. The Patriots defense will be super motivated to go after Brady.

  30. First give me ONE example when Bill has ever stated that it is “all about the coaches”. For 20 years he has ALWAYS made it “all about the playerS. Note I say, PLAYERS, not player. Bill understands more than most it seems, that more than any other team sport, that success in football is less reliant on superstar players, even QB’s. It is a game where the success of the individual is much more reliant on so MANY other individuals.

Brady was the same HOF QB who had the best offensive weapons in NFL history, and couldn’t crack a great NYG defense when Stephen Neal was lost to an injury in the first series of the superbowl. A great QB HELPS (a lot), but there have been SO many talented QB’s who didn’t never found the success Brady did with Bill and the countless very talented players he played with.

  31. …but there have been SO many talented QB’s who didn’t never found the success Brady did…

    —————————–

Because there is only one QB in NFL history who had the skills to turn cheap short slot receivers into top play makers; because there is only one QB who had the skills to SCORE ENOUGH, like 24+ by throwing receivers IN FRONT OF defenders, at least in playoff. (Watch yourself : in all the playoff games Peyton, Rodgers, Brees and Mahomes struggled in, opponent defense were able to keep their receivers in front of defenders.) Without such a QB, Belichick would be Belichick of Cleveland Browns because he was cheap on offense.

Brady could have won more with Wade Phillips, Todd Bowles, Brian Billick,Tony Dungy, Mike Zimmer, Mike Shanahan, Matt Nagy, Sean McVay, Mike Tomlin, Pete Carrol, Rex Ryan, because all of them would have given Brady a more decent and stable WR group.
