Saints pick off Mac Jones three times, defeat Patriots 28-13

After suffering a big loss to the Panthers last week, the Saints got back in the win column with a 28-13 victory over the Patriots on Sunday.

New Orleans’ defense largely kept New England’s offense from being effective, picking off quarterback Mac Jones three times in the contest. And when the Patriots scored their first touchdown with Jones’ 22-yard touchdown pass to Kendrick Bourne early in the fourth quarter, the Saints answered with Taysom Hill’s 4-yard touchdown run to put the game out of reach.

That ensuing drive took 13-plays and went 75 yards, taking 6:45 off the clock. The Saints ran on 10 of the 13 plays.

Jones’ third interception came as he threw to Nelson Agholor late in the fourth quarter with the Patriots down.

After registering just 30 yards from scrimmage on 14 touches last week, running back Alvin Kamara was the star for New Orleans. He registered 89 yards rushing and 29 yards receiving with a touchdown catch on Sunday.

Hill was a significant part of the offense, too, taking six carries for 32 yards with a touchdown.

The Saints didn’t ask Jameis Winston to do too much, but he completed 13-of-21 for 128 yards with a pair of touchdowns.

On the other side, the Patriots didn’t have a first down until midway through the second quarter. Jones threw his first two interceptions of his career, finishing the game 30-of-51 passing for 270 yards with a touchdown and three picks. Bourne had 96 yards on six catches with a touchdown to lead the team.

The Saints face the Giants at home in Week Four. The Patriots will host Tom Brady and the Buccaneers next week on Sunday Night Football.

  1. -Where you at Pat fan? Mac Jones is Alex Smith 2.0 but has a long way to go to match Smith’s career check down stats.

  2. Mac Jones’ rating was 55.2. Jameis WInston’s rating was 110.8. I guess Mac Jones isn’t the next Tom Brady after all. More like Stidham 2.0.

  3. Didn’t someone brag about how the Patriots were going to be 3 – 0 when they played Brady? I think he said something about how he was smelling fear from everyone. I sure hope it wasn’t me giving off that smell of fear. I mean, I did enjoy salami for lunch.

  4. Saints defense outstanding. Patriots are a team with a rookie qb,no matter the pedigree. Saints need to bench kicker, he is a momentum draining clutch choke artist. That’s why was a free agent in the first place. Hell, let Taysom kick it. Winston is clearly not the answer for saints qb. Constant indecision is obvious, holding the ball way too long leading to pressure and recurring bad choices which remains unfixed. Ian Book and Taysom may be the wise move.

  5. Proud of the guys they played hard and never quit.they just didnt do anything well enough to win they have to coach and execute better in all phases. Any real Pat’s fan knows starting a rc qb means you’re in for a long year this isnt about wins and loses it’s about our young team developing over the course of the year they will be fine.

This is so STUPID…. Guys played 3 games to compare him to anyone is like I said “STUPID “

Compare him to the QBs that were drafted with him and he has played better than any of them.

  7. Defense, ST, OL and new TEs were suppose to be the Patriots strengths (and coaching)

Their D has been better than average but when they needed to stop both Miami and New Orleans late to get the ball back they couldn’t do it.

The other 5 areas have been well below expectations. Way too many major mistakes. Jones didn’t lose this one, he, Bourne and Myers kept them alive. Juno Smith was awful, 4 drops, one a virtual handoff to the Saints for a pick six. He also had an obvious hold (not necessary ) that negated a 15 yard run.

The Saints played and coached better.

Or this is just yet another LAME comment about a guy that’s played 3 games

  9. Tried to warn Patriot fans that Jones wasn’t ready. Refs helped Patriots stay in this game too. Lots of calls missed especially when they were on offense. Right now, they can’t score points outside of Zack Wilson giving them short fields all last week.

  10. is it time to peruse the better than we were expecting draft slot for the pats as the first part of the season goes all crap n dang with a rookie QB we suddenly have a rather serious situation at RB especially the 3rd down variety .. so looks like the season shall be divided up into thirds to find out if this early season adversity really does prove that this years version of the pats with all those expensive FA signings turn out to be turds with the same problems being evident as they were last year but a year of learning maybe under too much stress n duress for the new QB but the calendar shall tell us later on if this was something all the punters before would have surprisingly agreed.

  11. “Compare him to the QBs that were drafted with him and he has played better than any of them.”

That’s not saying much. He was average at best the first two games as the Pats didn’t put the ball in his hands much and they were awful. They were again awful so today (Zach Wilson not counting as his game just started) but now he was too.

Lol Mac Jones is BAD and that makes flash MAD

  13. I can’t remember how many times P*ts fans told us about their two “elite” tight ends they picked up. Whoops.

  14. Mac’s passes were right on the money. Not his fault the other team got in the way. Once again, Goodell has his minions, the referee’s do the best to try to prevent BB’s greatness shining through.

BB still has his fastball and will think of something. He always does.

and defenders were right next to the receivers. That is why in Brady’s system, QB has to be a little quicker, not much, just 2/10th or 3/10th of a second quicker.

    ______

He always did*, you mean. And the “something” he always thought of was having a great QB bail him out.

Never seen someone blame the boogeyman this much. Pats are just a bad team and that starts with draft picks.

Does your tinfoil hat interfere with your TV reception?

  18. Apparently Belichick forgot how to play call no runs for Harris and no easy passes for Jones. Plus Pats defense got gashed early. Cannot play like this against the Bucs.

  19. It’s only September. The Patriots season starts in November. A rookie QB is due for some bad games and it’s better they happen early in the season.

Sorry friend, it’s 2021, not 2011, and Brady is in Tampa. You better start making peace with Patriots’ seasons ending in November, not starting.

He also has a better team than any other rookie quarterback.

  22. Meh. Outside of tipped ball picks, the Pats had a chance to win this. Turnovers are a killer when your high priced TE keeps tipping them to the other team. Everything the Saints did came up roses today. It happens. The officials took a day off, though. I was seeing flags flying in all the other games I watched, but not many here and it wasn’t because this was a clean game. If the zebras want to watch a game, they should buy a ticket. Both teams got away with stuff that probably should have been called.

  23. Turnovers are a killer when your high priced TE keeps tipping them to the other team.

    —————————–

That happens routinely if the defenders are next to receivers when the balls reach receivers. That is why NO other QB could score enough by throwing to receivers IN FRONT OF defenders, because defenders watch QB in the eyes.

So to make the system work, QB must “read a little quicker, react a little quicker and throw the ball a little quicker” so that the intended receivers have 2-3 yards extra space
    when the balls reach him.

Belichick and Pats coaches took it for granted, so did the fans, because they couldn’t tell with their eyes. So Belichick foolishly thought they didn’t need Brady and pushed Brady out, they only needed a QB who could throw 5 yards.
