Sunday Night Football: Packers defeat 49ers with Mason Crosby’s game-winning, 51-yard field goal

The 49ers had just taken a one-point lead with 37 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

The Packers had no timeouts.

And still, that was enough time for Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay offense.

The Packers moved to 2-1 on the season with Mason Crosby‘s 51-yard field goal that sailed through the uprights as time expired, giving Green Bay a 30-28 victory over San Francisco.

Starting the final drive on Green Bay’s 25, Rodgers connected with receiver Davante Adams for 25 yards on the first play. Rodgers spiked the ball and had another incompletion to Adams on second down. But on third-and-10 with 16 seconds left, Rodgers hit Adams for another 17 yards to the San Francisco 33.

The Packers executed a spike with three seconds left. And though San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan attempted to ice kicker Mason Crosby with a timeout, it didn’t work. Crosby’s 51-yard field goal was good.

Adams’ last two catches gave him 12 receptions for 132 yards with a touchdown on the night. Rodgers finished Sunday 23-of-33 passing for 261 yards with a pair of TDs.

49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was nearly Sunday’s hero, throwing a 12-yard touchdown to fullback Kyle Juszczyk with 37 seconds on the clock. Garoppolo made a few big throws on San Francisco’s last offensive series, converting a pair of third downs. But that was not enough to overcome what ended up being a decisive fumble on San Francisco’s previous drive.

Garoppolo attempted to throw the ball away on second-and-10 at the Green Bay 44 to avoid a sack. But instead, the ball went backward and was recovered by Packers linebacker De'Vondre Campbell.

Green Bay turned the giveaway into a 38-yard field goal, going up 27-21 with 2:39 left.

Garoppolo finished 25-of-40 passing for 257 yards with a pair of touchdowns and an interception. With so many injuries at running back, the 49ers had only 67 yards rushing, averaging 3.2 yards per attempt.

At 2-1, the Packers will play the 1-2 Steelers next week.

The 2-1 49ers will have their first matchup against the 1-2 Seahawks at home in Week Four.

  1. Looked to me like Aaron Rodgers sort of cared there. Hope the CBS talking heads saw it.
    NFC North>NFC West.

  2. That was one of the worst officiated games I’ve ever seen. But the refs came through and did just enough to help us get that W, even with an awful defense and a deteriorating quarterback.

  3. Great game Packers.

Green Bay earned that WAY more than the Niners attempt to steal it. Despite the Dline being a ‘strength’ it’s not enough to mask our Secondary which is a glaring weakness.

Add to that an offense that has been anemic, talk about slow starts. As I said last week this would eventually catch up to us. Next week doesn’t get any easier as Seattle has had our number for the better part of a decade regardless of their record.

    GO NINERS

  4. What’s that stat about Rodgers never beating a team with a winning record when trailing in the fourth quarter?

  5. Heartbreaker for us Niners fans but I do think the Pack deserved this one more. The way the Niners played we’re lucky we even ended up in a position to win at the end. Very sloppy game especially on defense.
Also we clearly suffered the effects of being thin at running back. Good win packers. Much deserved.

  6. Gg pack fan

Both teams were hosed by Jerome Bogarts crew. Bogarts crew deserves to be in NCAA.

Thanks for ruining my next 7 days and depressing me until 1PM pc time next sunday.

Bogart crew is kiss of death. Please don’t let them officiate 9ER games. Hes horrible. Honestly the worst crew in NFL

Ps Norman out verrett out sign Sherman

  7. What is San Fran doing on pass defense? It’s like they just go full on PI if they even start to feel like they are out of position. That will haunt them now that it’s on film.

  8. I was specifically told that Aaron Rodgers was washed up, overrated, and the sole reason the team lost in week 1, what happened?

  9. This is what happens when the coaching staff treats kickers like human beings.

  10. Someday maybe Jimmy will know as much as Aaron. Notice how Rodgers always ran the clock down to the last second before the snap while Jimmy was taking snaps with 16 seconds still on the clock. A couple of those earlier snaps left enough time for Rodgers to come back. So maybe Kyle should have been impressing on him to not take the snap until there’s just one or two seconds left on the play clock.

  11. It’s amazing what happens when Rodgers is actually allowed to win a game late. Rather than sitting on the sidelines, towel on his shoulders, watching his defense lose on the last possession again. Great win, GPG.

  12. We won. Congrats to our team, and that includes our players wearing the black and white striped uniforms who were on the field with us today. We may win the division, but it will take a real TEAM (which again, includes our players wearing the black and white striped uniforms) effort to help us win the Super Bowl.

  13. Wow, very happy to come out with the W tonight. The referees were absolutely ridiculous! You know they’ve taken over the game when you can’t even enjoy a big play for 5-10 seconds while you wait to see if a flag was thrown. Not saying the Packers didn’t benefit from a couple iffy Pi’s, but the 2 against Stokes were crazy bad calls as were the missed grounding and missed helmet to Adams. Just let them play for chrissake.

  14. I know the season is early but if your a football fan you can’t deny that this season has been the best so far it’s like mostly every game is close and a nail biter timeouts and running the clock seem to be more important than ever!.

  15. Why would you attempt to ice a veteran kicker like Crosby? That’s always been one of the dumbest coaching moves. There is zero evidence it works. You’re just giving them more time to get the kick right.

  16. For 59 minutes that looked like your typical GB game vs a decent team. Start out hot. Fall asleep. Let the opposing team back in and lose the game. Really shocked they won. Even more shocked Joe Barry’s D played somewhat decent.

  17. Here’s a thought. DPI and OPI calls need to be reviewed like TD plays without requiring a coach to throw the red flag. These are often 20+ yard fouls and automatic first downs or 20+ yards to go of OPIs.

Note to Niner fans from a Packers fan living in the Bay Area. Had Shanahan let his team man up against a Packers defense that wa underwhelming the first two games and with a 3rd string LT and 3 of 5 Of the OL rookies, SF would have won this game. Shanahan schemes to win and is growing every cute gimmick out there to see early in the season. I’d be upset with the head coaching if I was a 49ers fan.

Nevertheless, kudos to the whole Packers team who came in believing they could win in CA I front of a hostile crowd against a stud defense and an O-line with 4 first rounders.

    GoPackGo!!!

  18. We saw 2 playoff teams tonight. If Rodgers made it look easy against SF’s defense, I feel very strongly about AZ’s home game in a couple of weeks vs the Niners. We have to be ready to play vs Jimmy G. He is very cool & poised in the clutch. With the distance kickers have been nailing it, 30-40 seconds is not enough time to stop these offenses against the soft prevent zone. The middle linebacker was not sitting deep enough when Aaron made that big completion over the middle. Thanks Packers for a LITTLE relief in the standings (Not much at all in this SUPER CROWDED NFC)!

    Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Thank you, that’s very generous and much appreciated. I think it was a deserved win for the Packers. They have a much-maligned defense that came up big tonight several times, despite 49’er-friendly officiating. They played well through all that. Thank God Kevin King was hurt. The 49’er defensive back that speared Adams should’ve been tossed. How did “New York” miss that?

  20. Why did niner defender touch Devonte Adams when he caught ball with 11 seconds and dove to
ground. He wasn’t down by contact. He was surrounded by by 5 niner defenders. Clock keeps running till he is touched by defender. Why touch him ? By the time he realizes he hasn’t been touched there will not be time for Rodgers to spike ball…niners win …Am i missing something here?

  21. Great game for the Green and Gold. I was hoping they would suck it up. Looked good off and on for the entire game. Can’t wait to beat them at Lambeau!

  22. Jerome Bogarts crew looked incompetent on the National stage. So many key blown calls. They gift wrapped the game for the Niners but Jimmy G. Fumbled the present. Another failure for Shanahan. Memo to Hall or Fame John Lynch- you should have used your draft picks on some secondary help.

  23. When a player goes down to stop the clock, why do defenders help them out by touching them?Back away from the guy lying on the ground and let the clock run out.I’m surprised no coach or player is savvy enough to have that figured out.

  24. LOL … talking heads eating crow right now. Tell me again how Rodgers doesn’t care!! Packers offensive line with 4 new starters held up just enough. Special teams still aren’t special. Huge win which most weren’t expecting.

  25. Hey who’s got it better than us???? NooooooooBody!!!!!
How bout all those stories about us being dead just two weeks ago???????????

    R E L A X!

  26. The NFL has to do something with this refing crew. They were god awful. This is for sure one of the worst officiated games I’ve seen in a long long time. Almost like the Head ref had money on the 9ers or something.

  27. A lot of people talk smack about Rodgers but whether you’re a Packer fan or not you have to admire what he did last night. We have been so lucky to see QBs like Elway, Marino, TB, Favre, Rodgers, Brees, etc.

  28. When a player goes down to stop the clock, why do defenders help them out by touching them?Back away from the guy lying on the ground and let the clock run out.I’m surprised no coach or player is savvy enough to have that figured out.
    *************************************************************************

Players can also give themselves up. They don’t have to wait to be touched.

  29. Packers beat both the 49ers and the officials last night, that hit on Adams should’ve been a personal foul. 49ers shouldn’t have left my man Rodgers 37 seconds to work with.

  30. To the guys who asked why 49ers defenders touched Adams, it doesn’t matter. When a player gives himself up the play is over touched or not.

  31. When does a player give themselves up?Has anyone ever seen a replay where time is determined by when a player gave themselves up? If a QB slides that’s one thing. If a WR flops to the ground that’s another. It is subjective and up the officials. In last night’s game it would have run off at least a couple of more seconds and they would not have gotten the FG off.

  32. 30 points scored. Where’s the 49’ers defense. And why does Garoppolo continue to make mistakes? Is his mind not in the game? This is an immature team run by an immature coach.

  33. Better put, when you touch a player who has flopped you make it too easy for the official to blow the whistle and go through the process of spotting the ball. If the 49ers had not touched the flopper then the ball probably would not have been spotted in time for the FG

  34. I think the refs had more yards on PI calls than the Packers in the first half.

Awful game to watch. Refs had more impact than any player on the field.

In fairness, that’s easy to say after the fact. It’s one thing if you’re moving into field goal range to win the game with a kick. But they needed a TD, and you can’t burn up time you may need when you know you need to get all the way down the field.

  36. Kudos to Rodgers, he’s done this before and I find it hard to believe that the San Fran coaches weren’t aware of this. Also since when ever has the prevent defense been a good idea when the opposing team just needs a field goal? They looked like they were playing to prevent a TD not a field goal. The defense was playing pretty good against Green Bay in the 4th, this was just head scratching dumb.
