Lions release Jamie Collins

USA TODAY Sports

Linebacker Jamie Collins isn’t getting traded, but he is leaving Detroit.

The Lions announced that Collins has been released on Tuesday. The team spent the last week trying to trade the veteran and head coach Dan Campbell said that there were suitors for his services, but the team opted to move on without getting any compensation in return.

Collins was in his second season with the Lions and he started 14 games last season. He also started the first two games of this season, but Campbell said the team wanted to give more playing time to younger players like fourth-round pick Derrick Barnes.

Barnes started and made four tackles in the Week Three loss to the Ravens.

Collins will become a free agent immediately and is able to sign with any team that might be interested in adding some experience to their linebacking corps.

  1. “head coach Dan Campbell said that there were suitors for his services”. So in other words once he wanted out why would any one give up some thing when they can get it for free?

  2. New England could use people at every position on offense, can he switch sides of the ball? Actually the Pats need D too.

  3. Played his best in New England. Was pretty good in Cleveland. Played his worst in Detroit.

  4. My guess is Collins goes to a team that is a possible contender and is willing to sign him.
He won’t go back to NE.

  5. Jamie will be heading to the Pats if they want him. At this point in his career why not go to a team where he knows that he will fit in and be productive.

  6. Cue the “BREAKING NEWS: LB Jamie Collins signs a one-year contract with the New England Patriots” alert in 3… 2… 1…

  7. It’s always fun to imagine players signing with your team, but Collins is HOT GARBAGE. He’s been a check casher ever since his Cleveland days.

  8. ““head coach Dan Campbell said that there were suitors for his services”. So in other words once he wanted out why would any one give up some thing when they can get it for free?”

You don’t know the contracts and personal baggage of the players offered. Sometimes nothing is better than something, because something could be a sink hole.

    Who wants a sinkhole?

Oh, I don’t know….”best coach ever and best place he’s ever played” sort of thing??

    Signed,

    P.S.
He’d be rescued from the LIONS, so…

  10. He’ll go to the highest bidder. It’s all about the Benjamins$$. To bad the chiefs are out of money.

  11. Players used to sign with the pats because Brady gave em a shot to win a ring and in return get paid with the pats or else. No one is going to the pats anytime soon for cheap

That was a long time ago and 95% due to Brady and Gronk. Maybe he goes to Tampa.

  13. Lots of post here for wanting Collins on their team now that he’s a free agent. I’m guessing you all go trick or treating at the local businesses in your town , but never go there to buy anything the rest of the year. “Free yes I’ll have some “

  14. If there really were suitors, why would you release him for nothing instead of taking whatever compensation was being offered ? I’m calling BS or stupidity on Detroit’s front office.

  15. I remember when he left New England they were tired of him free-lancing every play and blowing his assignments. It wasn’t like he left to go pursue more money. The only thing that’s changed is he is now slower. Doesn’t sound too enticing.

As for Seattle, they already have one guy who doesn’t play his assignment and can only excel when he free-lances in Jamal Adams. There is a reason all their CBs were in cover 3 and getting scorched underneath this week. Adding another guy like that seems like disaster waiting to happen.

Interesting…I don’t remember Gronk on those teams from 2001-2004. Try harder.

Correction – 95% due to the kicker and the defense.

  19. Dynasty over. Nobody is coming to NE to win a title anymore. That ship has sailed. Stop living in the past.

  20. Couldn’t even get a 7th for him? There should be no sense of loyalty in the face of any kind of value for the club.

  21. Classy move by the Lions.
They released Jamie Collins so he could sign with whichever team he pleases rather than be forced to go to a team; most likely for a 6th or 7th round pick.
The Lions did right by their player

  22. Collins is a very gifted player but halfway through the season, I think he loses interest or starts doing his thing instead of “doihg his job” When Collins & Chandler Jones were on their game in New England some years back they were a treat to watch. And then, in the 2006 championship game vs Denver, Collins went out to lunch for half the game & gave up a couple of TDs. Belichick got rid of him the next year, if I recall.

  23. Correction – 95% due to the kicker and the defense.

Suuuure. All Super Bowls are arrived at and won simply with a kicker and a defense.

  24. Can he still run? The Patriots have huyoooge speed issues in the front 7, which is most egregious at the LB spot. If he can run, bring him in.

  25. Well, we’ve all seen this one before. He signs a minimum contract with NE and plays like an All-Pro.

  26. I realize that he is getting older and is more than likely stuck in his ways as a veteran but couldn’t they get something for him? Maybe it’s his salary that is unappealing for trade but in that case you keep him because it gives you the best chance to win. His stats may not be eye popping but you keep him on the field because of his play making ability. And yes he has it.

That would only apply if they had not spent a week trying to shop him for something.
