Bill Belichick lays it on thick regarding Tom Brady

Whatever they may privately think or say, neither Bill Belichick nor Tom Brady will ever say anything publicly that would get the other guy even more riled up in advance of their first ever game against each other.

On Friday, Belichick laid it on thick.

Asked whether he’d have had the success he’s had without Brady, Belichick said, “Of course not.”

It got better, when Belichick was asked to explain how their partnership brought the team over the top.

“We could talk about that for two decades. I think I’ve been on the record, I don’t know, dozens of times saying there’s no quarterback I would rather have than Tom Brady. And I still feel that way. I was very lucky to have Tom as the quarterback for — to coach him. He was as good as any coach could ever ask for.”

That’s exactly what Belichick would say. What he should say. It’s accurate. Regardless of whether and to what extent the parting was mutual, they enjoyed a run of success that never will be duplicated, at least not in our lifetimes. Both of them need to realize it.

There’s no Belichick without Brady, and there’s no Brady without Belichick. And both needed to have a great group of other players who were talented and selfless and committed and motivated.

  1. Nothing thick about it. Belichick would be nothing without TB12, and NOT vise versa.
N.E. fans think GOATS are picked from a tree.
They are about to find out a hard, hard lesson.

  2. Brady wins wherever he goes not so much BB. However they both are fine with cheating to win….wink….wink.

  3. Belichick is sub .500 without TB12. Belichick is nothing without TB12 and we’re all seeing that play out.

  4. It’s getting to both Tom and Bill now it clearly isn’t just another game for either of them.

  5. Both parties have the chance right now to prove they would have succeeded without the other.

So far, Brady is winning that argument. Imagine if Tampa repeats or if Brady manages to win multiple more championships before retiring. Personally, I’d call it after this year if I were him though, especially after seeing poor Ryan Fitzpatrick’s injury.

But I think Belichick is still going to show us he can be a top coach without Brady, and I don’t think we have heard the last of New England this year.

It’s always fun seeing the Bills fans get so worked up – you know you hated Brady the whole time he played in NE. Now you all act like your all fans of his.

Bills are really overrated, what’s this the third week in a row you’re playing a backup QB?

Not all Pats fans were born during the Belichick/Brady dynasty, even though it has been a long enough run where many have been. Many of us were here when the team was broke and didn’t have a stadium to play in. We know what it is to root for a team that the best you can hope for is a good game by a favorite player and an occasional win. Just making the playoffs was a pipe dream for the majority of the team’s existence.

Brady has moved on as have so many other players that made the 20 year dynasty happen. But go ahead, doubt Bill. Doubt the man who built it all. Now he is building again. And New England fans get to watch him as he strives to become the winningest coach in NFL history. Only Halas and Shula to go.

What has your team’s coach done?

  8. They both realize it. They’re both highly intelligent. No human is perfect, and I don’t expect either of these two guys to be, either. Was Phil Jackson a great basketball coach? Well, he won a lot of championships, but he had Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, and Shaq. He might not have won any championships without those all time greats, but at least he didn’t blow it. Neither did Belichick. A lot of coaches allow their ego’s to get in the way, but they’re human, too. It’s easy to do. Belichick lasted through six super bowl wins. Who was the jockey that rode Secretariat? Was it the horse or the jockey? Could another jockey have won on Secretariat? Probably. The triple crown? Probably. But you still have to stay on the horse. Most coaches could have won championships with Brady and Michael Jordan. But the guys that did win, deserve something. It’s always an interesting conversation, and everyone’s not going to have the same opinion. I think that’s awesome. If everyone thought the same about everything, the world be boring. We’d all live in the suburbs.

  9. Rodney Harrison summed up the Dynasty era the most accurately.
Everyone else, especially the either or people are out of touch with reality.

  10. Translation: “Tom, I know you are still pissed I wouldn’t put Malcom in the game and I squandered your 505 yard SB passing performance, but please don’t embarrass me Sunday night. For old times, please go easy on me”

  11. Belichick is being very humble his legacy was already set with 2 rings and a defensive gameplan in the hall of fame what he did with the Pat’s with Brady was just icing on the cake . If brady doesn’t go somewhere with disciple and very structured organization he would be herding goats like the dude picked ahead of him.

  12. Belichick is a great coach. Brady is the GOAT. “There’s no Brady without Belichick.” Please. Yes there is. See last year’s Super Bowl.

I get that Belichick was a great coach for Brady and that it was a long and successful partnership. But in an alternate universe where Brady was drafted by the Bengals, I still think the GOAT finds a way to be the GOAT.

  13. Rooting for Bill in this game, but the Patriots will get blown out. The Bucs have Tom– who is solid if not great at this point– and way way more talent on their roster.

  14. It’s always fun seeing the Bills fans get so worked up – you know you hated Brady the whole time he played in NE. Now you all act like your all fans of his.

Tom Brady is a different person outside of that organization. Gronk retired rather than play for BB. How those high priced free agents working out?! Pats winning 5 games this year? Y’all beat the Jets, great work!

  15. >> This has to be the longest game week of Belichick’s coaching career.

Actually, I would say the shortest. I know when I am preparing hard for something that I am not quite ready for, there is never enough time and it goes too quickly.

I think the Patriots will do better than people expect. What would be awesome would be if Belichick pulled something out of his hat like he did against Baltimore where he mixed eligible and in-eligible receivers. Seeing what happened to Harbaugh, I think Bruce Arians head would literally explode.

Brady never sees the field in the NFL without Bill. Ever. The gutsiest call in NFL history was staying with Brady over Bledsoe.
This whole week shows one thing and one thing only–people hate Bill far more than they hate Brady.
Ask yourself Bills fans or Jets or Jax…would you rather have Bill as your coach than your current coach? I’d bet there are 31 other franchises that would JUMP at the chance to get Bill.
Look, if BB was coaching Tampa right now The D wouldn’t be giving up 200+ through the air, or losing to the Chargers. That team is so stacked a great coach would be looking at undefeated.

  17. Belichick could have won SBs with Eli Manning level QB. Especially when you consider the fist 3 SBs were led by the defense and special teams. What’s with all the hate? Without Belichick believing in Brady, Brady is probably not even playing in the league.

  18. >> We could talk about that for two decades.

I’m pretty sure what he said was “We’ve talked about that for two decades.”

  19. This patriot team couldnt beat tampa if tom was still in new england. Tom bailed on this team when he saw how bare the cupbord was going to be. The cupboard is still bare today.
I wish this divorce went down ten years allowing enough rebuilding time ago to get the real answer to all this
