PFT’s 2021 coach of the year watch, Week Four

So a couple of weeks ago, we tried out an in-season hot-seat watch. There was a small problem with it. The people who are included in such lists have a tendency to freak out a little at their status.

That resulted in unnecessary and unwanted phone calls and other communications. Frankly, I decided to hell with it. Not worth the trouble.

Besides, most of the folks who are on the hot seat already know it. For those who don’t, well, I’ll let them enjoy their blissful ignorance.

Instead, we’ll try this weekly feature — especially since you can bet on it. Coach of the year watch, with odds from the PointsBet sportsbook.

Here are the ones we currently like. For anyone not listed, there’s a chance you’re on the hot seat. Even if you don’t realize it.

Matt Rhule, Panthers (+1000): Coach of the year usually goes to the guy whose team most exceeds his team’s loose, general preseason expectations. Rhule’s team wasn’t expected to be a major player in the NFC. It is. If it continues to be, he’s getting votes.

Vic Fangio, Broncos (+1800): If they beat the Ravens on Sunday, Fangio’s odds will fall.

Jon Gruden, Raiders (+1100): Name recognition helps. A playoff appearance would help even more. An unlikely division title could nail it down.

Kliff Kingsbury, Cardinals (+2200): He’ll need to win the division to have a real shot at it, which won’t be easy. End Arizona’s eight-game losing streak to the Rams, and it gets a little easier.

Brandon Staley, Chargers (+700): The current favorite needs a Monday night win over the Raiders to hold that spot.

Sean McVay, Rams (+900): He entered the season with high expectations. His team is fulfilling them, so far. If they get the No. 1 seed in the NFC, he could win it.

Others to watch: Kevin Stefanski (+1500), John Harbaugh (+2000), Sean Payton (+2000), Sean McDermott (+1800).

Ignore for now: Mike McCarthy (+2200), Kyle Shanahan (+1700).

Value plays: Mike Vrabel (+5000), Matt LaFleur (+3000), Zac Taylor (+3000).

  1. Some of these coaches have benefitted from surprisingly easy schedules. It will be interesting to see if they can keep the momentum going. I hope they do as it will be nice to see some new teams succeed.

  2. LaFleur should’ve won it each of the last two years, both of which had the Packers and Rodgers on their collective last legs by every expert in the industry.

  3. MLF kind of got hosed on this. It’s nearly impossible to win COY when you’ve got AR at QB, but he took a team that had floundered the previous 2 years to back to back championship games, AR became MVP again after looking a little worn out, and the Packers are looking to compete again this season. He was a night and day difference over MM and deserves considering irregardless of his QB.

If Zimmer beats the browns, he could be on both lists.

If Minnesota beats the Browns it won’t be because of the D Coordinator cosplaying as a head coach.

  5. If Gruden stinks, they say it’s because he is a has been. If Gruden does well, they say he’s living off his name. Bottom line: He got that name because he’s a darn good coach. Raiders are legit contenders and I don’t think any single person can get as much out of David Carr than Chucky. And this is coming from a Browns fan.

  6. Chucky and da Raiders have had a tough schedule but came out of the gate 3 and 0 but we will see after this week against the hated Bolts with a Raider Nation taking over sci fi.

———————————————————————————————I think you meant Derek Carr. David is no longer playing in the NFL.

  8. How is Zac Taylor an afterthought when the Bengals are 1st in the AFCN when everyone thought the Bengals would stink again?

  9. Matt Nagy 2018, Lovie Smith 2005, Dick Jauron 2001. In Chicago, it’s the kiss of death. You can have it.

    ________

Because the Steelers look like they’re quite bad, the Jaguars are known to be very bad, and he has a loss to a bad Bears team. The Vikings win is his best one and while they look OK, they’re 1-2 and the preseason perception for them wasn’t amazing. If he keeps it up he’ll move up the list, but he’s still gotta prove it.

Wait, we’re heading into week 4 and your looking at division leaders? There are teams every year that start 5-0 and never make it to the playoffs. If the Bengals are hanging out in week 12 or 13, then your argument would be valid.

  12. 4 teams in 30 years started 5-0 and didn’t make the playoffs. It doesn’t happen every year. It happens once every seven years on average.

  13. The Giants didn’t want to pay Rhule, how did that work out?
With the worst G.M. in the league it wouldn’t matter…
