Teams starting rookie quarterbacks are 1-11 this season

It’s been an ugly start to the season for the 2021 NFL draft quarterback class.

Through the Jaguars’ Thursday night loss, teams starting quarterbacks are now just 1-11 this season: Jacksonville with Trevor Lawrence is 0-4, Zach Wilson and the Jets are 0-3, Justin Fields is 0-1 starting with the Bears, Davis Mills is 0-1 starting with the Texans, and Mac Jones is 1-2 with the Patriots.

Jones’ one win came in a game against Wilson and the Jets, so some rookie quarterback had to win a game that day. Otherwise, rookie quarterbacks haven’t won at all.

It may not get any better this week. The Bears a 3-point favorites over the Lions, although it’s unclear if Fields will start for Chicago. Mills and the Texans are 17-point underdogs against the Bills, Wilson and the Jets are 6-point underdogs against the Titans and Jones and the Patriots are 7-point underdogs against the Buccaneers.

Week Four of their rookie season is way too early to draw any significant conclusions about this rookie quarterback class, but so far it’s looking ugly.

  1. Even with all the Titans injuries this week I’m surprised their only favored by 6 over the jets I would’ve guessed 9.5 or more

  2. Jones play hasn’t made me upset at all. A few really rookie type mistakes, but solid. The facts were plain to see, he knows and operates the offense better than Cam did. So I will live with the results and know he will grow, if the offensive line (really offensive to me) doesn’t get him killed first.

  3. Andy Reid doesn’t get enough credit for refusing to start a rookie QB he knew had twice the physical talents as the current starter did.
All Patrick Mahomes did in his 2nd year was pass for 5000 yards and 50 touchdowns.

  4. There are 11 positions on offense, 11 positions on defense (and equal amounts of players on special teams). The QB is just one of those positions. There is a reason why teams in the early rounds draft a QB especially the first 10 picks of each round, it’s generally because these teams stink. Other than New England, the other teams are in turmoil. These teams stink. Look elsewhere for the problems.

  5. Troy Aikman was 0-11 his rookie year. A team doesn’t usually start a rookie QB unless they were a horrible team. And some of those QB’s are playing on teams with new coaches who never were NFL head coaches prior to week one. Just like Jimmy Johnson was in Dallas. There will be a couple years of re-building before some of these great young QB’s start winning super bowls. This is how most HOF QB’s started out when they were drafted by the very worst teams. Shouldn’t shock anyone. Know your NFL history.

This isnt to take anything away from Jones BUT if your level of acceptance is just being able to better operate an offense than an unemployed qb who is long past his prime and was never a master of any offense system even during his prime the. you are setting the bar waaaaay waaaay too low for acceptable.

  8. It’s hard to play well as a rookie QB. Patrick Mahomes didn’t even play. What’s interesting here is that Justin Herbert played as a rookie last year, and the Chargers were playing as well as just about any team the last third of the season. The young QB took most of his rookie year to figure out the basics, but then he started playing very well. The Chargers were a very well coached team last year. The shocking thing is they fired their coach after one of the most amazing seasons I can remember out of a coach. I can’t think of another instance where a guy who should have been coach of the year, ended up getting fired. And nobody is talking about that. They should really stop with the nonsense of the Rooney Rule, if nobody is even noticing what happened with the Chargers last year.

  9. Sorry Charlie … Lynn was fired because his team lost too many leads in games last year. The Chargers should have had a winnng season.

  10. It’s almost like quarterbacks aren’t actually the bandaid for bad organizations/GMs/coaching, and need to actually be developed just like any other player.

The bigger problem is the jealous veteran players, as well as short career players looking out for themselves, caused this to happen when they signed the outrageously one-sided CBA in 2010.

I can and it was the same team, Marty after taking the Chargers to a 14-2 record in 2006

Except they werent a well coached team. They lost multiple times because of clock management and Lynn over the years was getting WORSE not better at that.
