Kyle Shanahan: Jimmy Garoppolo has a chance to play on Sunday vs. Cardinals

Don’t count 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo out of Sunday’s game against the Cardinals just yet.

San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan said today that Garoppolo’s calf injury will be re-evaluated on Wednesday, and that there’s a chance that he could play on Sunday in Arizona.

Previous reports indicated that Garoppolo would miss a few weeks, but Shanahan sounded more optimistic than that about the possibility that the calf contusion isn’t so serious to force Garoppolo to miss a game.

Trey Lance replaced Garoppolo on Sunday, and that immediately raised the question about whether it would become Lance’s job for good. But Lance may go back to the sideline, if Garoppolo can go this week.

  1. He ain’t playing. He’s Jimmy Glass for a reason. You’re lies won’t fool the other team.

  2. If Jimmy can’t go these next 2 weeks, his career is pretty much a wrap as a starter. The offense looked no less efficient with Lance.

  3. As a Cardinals fan, I’m praying Jimmy plays. He won’t be 100%. Lance despite not being as accurate as Jimmy G is a wild card with his scrambling ability. I think he presents more problems than a gimpy Jimmy G

  4. If you think Lance presents more problems than Jimmy G, you obviously didn’t watch the 49ers game on Sunday. Jimmy G may not be what people want him to be, but Trey Lance is super raw and not that accurate. 49ers couldn’t move the chains at all with him and even on the long Deebo TD he grossly underthrew it.

  5. Not a Niner fan but Garoppolo always takes so much crap and yet the guy wins most of the time he’s out there. Didn’t he come back quickly from a high ankle sprain last season? Those are usually 4-6 week injuries and he was back in like two or three if I remember and then got it rolled on again poor guy. From the way the rookie QB’s have played and the way Lance looked yesterday, the Niners are probably praying he can go this week.

  6. And forrmer GM Pat Kerwin said on his radio show right before the season started that Kyler Murray was the 4th best QB in the NFC West and that he’d rather have Jimmy G than Murray.

Trey didn’t know he was going in the game until right before the 2nd half started, so of course he’ll be out of rhythm. Kyle even said the game plan against the Seahawks was not meant for Trey. You should blame Kyle for not having him ready and not giving him enough reps with the starters in the off-season, knowing a Jimmy G injury was inevitable.

  8. Jimmy G hasn’t played more than 6 games in a season in years, next week would be game 5. Accept that he’ll just get injured again and move on. Get the kid some experience.

  9. Whyyy? By his own words, he’s looking to get out of playing for a couple of weeks, at least. Just play the rook. If not, what was the point of trading up and drafting him so high?

  10. Coachspeak is invalid from 12pm Monday – 11.59 a.m. Monday.
It’s Trey-day for the rest of the year, unless he gets injured.

  11. I’ve been watching football for more than 40 years and I don’t think I’ve ever once heard a player announce how long he’d be out before he even got a diagnosis. Turns out it’s a bruise. Hilarious. Good try Jimmy but you gotta go to work like the rest of us.

With opinions like that we know why Kerwin is a former GM who the vast majority of fans have never heard of.

  13. I’ve never seen a QB with a more “deer in the headlights” look in close games than Jimmy G. I wonder how many of his injuries are real….

  14. Shanny was made to have Trey. He wanted Mac. Now he wants to prove he don’t need Trey. We all know he does. Maybe not this weekend, then the next one. One thing is for sure, if the Niners won’t reach PO, Shanahan may be out the door.

  15. who could have seen this coming…. JG goes down…his replacement waiting in the wings.
    .
KC takes old San Fran QBs. JG would be a great backup…

  16. I’m a Jimmy G fan but it’s time to close the books on Jimmy. He’s not durable enough to play this game.
Be smart and sign Cam Newton and let’s move forward with this Trey Offense and let Trey sit back and watch Cam run it before taking over.
