Sunday Night Football: Buccaneers hold on to win Tom Brady’s New England homecoming 19-17

Tom Brady didn’t have a touchdown pass. And he didn’t necessarily have a signature moment in a game where he became the league’s all-time leading passer.

But in one of the biggest regular-season games of all time, Brady’s team came away victorious.

The Buccaneers beat the Patriots 19-17 on Sunday Night Football, holding on for a victory that makes them 3-1 on the season.

In a game with limited scoring, there were four lead changes in the fourth quarter and nearly a fifth. With 59 seconds left in the contest, Patriots kicker Nick Folk sent a 56-yard field goal attempt off the left upright.

Head coach Bill Belichick had to make the decision to either kick or go for it on fourth-and-3 after linebacker Lavonte David batted down Mac Jones’ third-down pass to receiver Jakobi Meyers over the middle.

But Belichick elected to trust the kicker rather than his rookie quarterback and the rest of New England’s offense.

Even if Folk had made the kick, the Buccaneers would’ve had plenty of time for Brady to get the offense in field-goal range.

But all of that is moot, as Ryan Succop hit a 48-yard field goal with 1:57 left to give Tampa Bay its winning two-point margin. On the previous two plays, Brady nearly hit Antonio Brown for a deep touchdown pass. The ball went off Brown’s hands on third-and-8, which led to the field goal.

Brady ended the game 22-of-43 passing for 269 yards. He became the league’s all-time leading passer with a 28-yard toss to receiver Mike Evans in the first quarter. Evans led the way with seven catches for 75 yards. Running back Leonard Fournette had 91 yards on 20 carries and Ronald Jones had 25 yards on six attempts with the Bucs’ only touchdown.

Jones played a decent game for the Patriots, going 31-of-40 for 275 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. At one point, he completed 19 consecutive passes. But it ultimately wasn’t enough, as New England went 2-of-9 on third down.

The Patriots also could not run the ball at all, finishing the game with -1 yards rushing. That set a Buccaneers franchise record for fewest rushing yards allowed in a single game.

At 3-1, Tampa Bay will face Miami at home in Week Five.

The 1-3 Patriots will take on the 1-3 Texans on the road next Sunday.

  1. Dumb move by Belichick to not go for it on fourth down, that tipped ball on 3rd down was to a receiver that was WIDE OPEN, would have gone for at least 10-15 yards. Personally had more faith in Jones getting the two yards, than Folk who is not 100% kicking a 56 yard field goal. Pats are so close to being 3-1 it is ridiculous but in reality they are 1-3 and they have to go 10-3 to have a shot at playoffs, NOT HAPPENING! Lack of discipline on this team is evident, why, I have no clue. STUPID defensive penalties!

  3. What was BB thinking? Even if you by chance make a 56 yard FG, in driving rain, you still give Brady a minute left on the clock. You don’t have a go-to 4th and 3 play? BB is great, but sometimes his decision making is beyond belief.

  4. Not really a warm embrace at the end with Tom and BB. Seemed like Bill didn’t even make eye contact with Tom looking right at him. I would venture a guess that Bill not seeing Tom.face to face before he left was correct. Pretty nasty, physical game in the rain. The Pats played well but they’re still tied with my Fins in the basement of the AFC East and we hold a game. They’re more competitive than last year (maybe with this game as the bar). But the Pats are definitely rebuilding and they won’t be sniffing the playoffs this year. Sorry but the start of the second dynasty is delayed. They may have a good defense but the offense needs alot of work even with the 2 high priced TEs.

  5. I expected a loss but not a nail biter. Brady was shaky in the red zone which allowed the Pats to stick around but not trusting Jones was dumb. Jones made me a believer tonight he was great getting the ball out of his hands and outplayed Brady. Plus I thought the refs were actually pro Patriot see the Meyers fumble that got called back and the hands to the face that wiped out Brown’s big gain for reference.

  6. I have to say, that felt like a disappointing whimper of a way to end the game. I expected Belichick to go for the first down. Quick pass to the sideline, get into realistic range. 56 yards in the rain seems needlessly desperate. Going for the first would have been a great challenge for the young QB.

  7. Mac outplayed Brady easily. BB should of trusted him to get the 1st down on that last 4th and 3 after the 2 min warning.

  8. Brady still won while getting outplayed by Matt Jones. This just goes to show all you fanboys that it’s not all Brady in Tampa. That’s a good team. Also, has to hurt for Bill to lose on a missed FG. Good game by both teams.

  9. This game showed me how important Gronk is. We were missing that clutch guy on the other end of Brady’s passes. Also, was very surprised that Bill didn’t go for that 4th and 3. Once the FG unit came out I knew that we were going to win. He either misses or Brady gets the ball back with 50 seconds and 2 time outs. Anyway, props to Mac Jones. Dude showed some stones tonight.

  10. Patriots played better than anticipated… Can see Mac progressing, just need to get a good slot, true #1 receiver and speed at linebacker…

  11. Closer than I thought it would be.

At 1-3 the Pats season is done, which we knew it would be.

So, give Mac Jones a year to learn the pro game with no pressure of expectation, then get him a stud WR in next years draft (none of this N’Keal Harry nonsense).

Hopefully the fans who love Brady more than their Patriots team will be happy now and everyone can move on.

  12. As a Bills fan, I’ve always had respect for BB & the Pats. They came a doinked field goal away from beating the world champs tonight…with a rookie QB. I wouldn’t be surprised if they make the playoffs, but the Bills are going to win this division.
But if I were a Pats fan I’d be excited for what the future holds. Y’all better hope BB coaches until he’s 80 though, because his disciples never seem to have what it takes to succeed.

  13. Tampas running game, defense, and kicking game were more a factor in the win than Brady. He actually didn’t play all that well.

And yet people will spin it as Brady beats Belichick. So strange

  14. Pretty out of character for Brady to go deep to Brown those last two plays. The right plays would have been to run or throw short, gain some yards, maybe get a first down, force Pats to use their last TO, shorten that field goal.

Patriot Brady doesn’t mismanage the clock like that. Bucs Brady was trying to stick it to the Pats and get AB a TD… Lost his composure there (even though both passes were spot on.)

  15. That was not a good showing for a defense that was the reason for the playoff run last season. Heck they are horrible against anything except the run.

  16. Jones played a decent game for the Patriots, going 31-of-40 for 275 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. At one point, he completed 19 consecutive passes. Jones was the best qb on the field the bucs running game and the Pat’s turnovers were the difference.

  17. As a Pats fan, bummed with a loss because they should of gotten the win, but D played well and Brady didn’t get a chance to thrash anything.

  18. Records Brady has broken/made progress toward so far this year: Career R/S (Regular Season) passing yards; Oldest quarterback to record a win; Sacks taken (his R/S average is 1.74 per game. Averages for other active quarterbacks: Roethlisberger, 2.22; Matt Ryan, 2.00; Rodgers, 2.36; Wilson, 2.73; Stafford, 2.30); Games played (non-kicker).

Records Brady likely will break/make progress in this year: R/S Passes Completed (Brady needs to complete 246 more passes to break Brees’ record of 7146. That’s 19 per game over the remaining 11 R/S games this year); R/S Games played (including kickers): Brady will pass Phil Dawson next week to take sole possession of 7th place).

  19. As far as what each team needed to show for this game the Patriots succeeded wildly and the Bucs leave town with a lot of question marks.

  20. Brady being lousy in the redzone kept this close. Otherwise it’s a multiple score game. Jones got hot in the second half but nearly had 3 picks in the game. He’s a rookie though so I will cut him slack. This loss stings more than any other I’ve experienced. Then again the Texans are next week so maybe there’s hope.

Wow, is that what the pats have come down to these days? Moral victories?

  22. Win win for both guys. Brady gets the win but Bill delivered a game plan that had Brady frustrated and contained for the majority of the night. At the end of the day he had his team in position at the end of the game to take the lead. We can question the 4th down fg and all but 6” to the right and it’s the right call.

Good outcome for both guys. Neither got blown out and it was a competitive game

  23. Who paid the pundits who said last week “Brady wants to blow out the Pats” or “Brady wants to hang 50 on NE”? That was quite the fantasy. The Bucs barely escaped with a win.
Mac Jones OUTPLAYED Brady as anyone watching saw. Brady was a very mediocre 51% passing with zero TDs (22/43) and off the mark A LOT, while Jones was his “usual” 77% (31/40). Even Jakobi Meyers was 2/2.
NE is getting better. Hope they can get the run game going.

There were certainly some crap calls against both teams last night.

  25. I thought with all the hype this game was going to be a stinker and it was. Frist, they forgot the most important part of showing Brady coming on the field and the fans cheering, the thing everyone was waiting for, or my local channel cut that out but I never saw it.

  26. Fun game to watch from a mostly unbiased fan! I believe the Pats defense deserves a little love too. They made Brady pretty uncomfortable and played their a$$’s off. Loved the extended coverage of handshakes and hugs. Brady earned that respect!!

  27. The Patriots were one “doink” away from winning that game. It was entertaining, in any case. With some time, they will once again be a team to be reckoned with. I think that the Bucs should be worried that they struggled to beat a team that they probably expected to blow out.

  28. I could BB thinking the running game had been junk the whole game but why not try a play action on that 4th and 3? Mac Jones had been very accurate all day. Only thing was that the rain had picked up a lot by the end of the game. But still, even if you hit the FG, you still have Brady with 50seconds and a timeout left. Gotta go for it there.

When the goal is to rebuild the team and good progress toward that goal is being shown, then that is a victory. Call it what you want to, but the immediate need and objective got met.

For Tampa Bay who should have been able to crush the Pats and did want to make that statement after losing last week, it was more of a moral defeat.

And for those that are into the Belichick vs Brady thing I would have to give the contest to Belichick. Brady got stopped, it was other parts of the Bucs that pulled them through.

  30. Jones looked amazing for a Rookie. That kid had 330 lbs men in his face all night long. He never waivered. Amazingly the Pats are one sore-plant-leg away from being 2-2. This was less of a loss than the standings show.

  31. Many quarterbacks have outplayed Brady and walked away with an L on their record. Never count out #12. With him you always have a chance, especially if it comes down to the wire.

  32. Foxborough was PACKED with Buccaneer fans tonight!! Holy cow. Did you hear how loud they came through on the television? It was Tampa North!!

  33. Closest the Pats will come to a Super Bowl for the next couple of decades is losing to a SB champ in the regular season, Brady retires as a Buc and goes into the HOF wearing red and black.

  34. Perhaps the toughest game of Brady’s career. The emotion of the moment, the burden of expectation and the palpable tension all preyed upon him in a way unlike any other time in his 21+ years…even in the 10 Super Bowls. In those game, there was no pre-game emotion. Sunday night there was. He played well. A few passes sailed, the weather played a part and there were a handful of drops. And how ’bout that swivel-hipped run for a first down? On the other side, the emotionless mastermind, confounding Brady with multiple looks and schemes. He coached extremely well. And, wow, what a game, decided on a doinked field goal in the last minute. All hail to Brady and Belichick, the greatest of all time at what they do. We won’t see their like again.

  35. So much about Brady not playing well, as if he didn’t throw first down passes that were dropped (Evans and Brate) and back-to-back dimes to AB (one misplayed in the air and one dropped in the end zone).

The elements played a factor for both teams tonight, but can’t act like Tommy was missing receivers all night or something.

Great game plan by the Pats on both offense and defense. How there was no talk about JOSH MCDANIELS and his play calling for both Brady in the past and Mac in the present is baffling to me.

BB with a masterclass for the ages and Mac outplayed Brady. Obviously.

    ——

A Master class? BB left Brady enough time to drive his team down the field to kick a game winning FG. And TB won the game.

BB should have gone for it on 4th down…..he didn’t….And now the Pats are tied for last place in the AFCE. How any Pats fan can view this as a “win” is incomprehensible

  38. Belichick is protecting Mac Jones and that’s a good thing. No need to go for it on the 4th down to win the game and when they don’t convert ruins his confidence. The kid is being developed the right way.

  39. Why would they go for it on 4th down? They were 2-9 on 3rd downs all game, and you want to play those odds when you have a chance to win the game right now? Also, Folk was good from 58 yards (in the rain) in pregame. I think “a bird in hand is worth 2 in the bush” applies here.

  40. I think that the hug and the 20+ minute conversation afterward was a good way to put this whole thing to bed. The game certainly wasn’t pretty, but it was competitive, literally to the end. The Patriots hung with them throughout. I’m glad that it wasn’t a blow out.

  41. If Brady actually plays till 50, I can see him taking another loaded squad to a SB. Tampa went all in and that’s what you have to do with the GOAT. Downside is the cap complications and what you’re left holding after it’s over.

  42. Mike Reiss asked Belichick about the 4th down call. Belichick pointed out that the Pats had converted only 2 of 9 3rd downs in the game.

Something for people to keep in mind, if you’re certain that the play call was wrong.

  43. “Not really a warm embrace at the end with Tom and BB. Seemed like Bill didn’t even make eye contact with Tom looking right at him”

I really get tired of people demanding that public figures conduct their interpersonal relations with an eye toward the approval of the public.

Belichick is not an effusive guy, but he did visit the Bucs’ locker room and have a 20-minute conversation with Brady after the game. But he didn’t do that on camera for your entertainment.

  44. Nice work by Brady with no DBs, no Gronk, missed chip shot FG, dropped passes etc. If they played the Pats 9 more times, they’d be 10-0 EASILY.
