When 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was ruled out for Sunday’s game due to a calf injury, head coach Kyle Shanahan said that Garoppolo remained the team’s starter when he’s healthy.

After Sunday’s 17-10 loss to the Cardinals, Shanahan said “nothing’s changed” regarding the team’s quarterback depth chart and that he hopes Garoppolo will be healthy enough to play when the team returns from their bye in Week Seven.

“The fact that he had a chance this week, that gives me a lot of hope coming back,” Shanahan said, via 49ersWebZone.com. “I think any time you’re dealing with calves and stuff like that, you never know how they’re going to react. I think that was similar to with [George] Kittle. I thought he was going to be alright a couple of weeks ago, and now we’re going on IR. So, I don’t want to speak too soon, but hopefully.”

First-round pick Trey Lance ran for 89 yards while completing 15-of-29 passes for 192 yards and an interception.

  1. But plenty has changed with the confidence the fans had in this coach staff and their plunder at drafting QB!

  2. At the defense is fixed.
Where was Mitchell in the second half?
And Kyle Shanahan is supposed to and Offensive wizard.
They are going to RG3 Lance.

  3. Wow with the picks this guy has been favored with over his tenure and to not really have accomplished much, I dont think much of this guy. If Trey Lance was that good, evaluated at the three position and picks givin up for the team future, then dammit you play the guy and tell Jimmy your the backup.
Mac is playing, Shields is playing, Burrows, and your guy is not ready yet by game 5? Must be something going on besides development. Of course all those other QB’s played div I football and in tough divisions at that. Where did your guy play?

  4. Shanahan is treading on thin ice. His offense is eratic, and he can’t seem to bring consistency to this team. I think he’s going to have to show some real improvement in the second half of the season, or he needs to go.

  5. You should have no need of this question Coach. You spent an exorbitant value in draft capital to move up for a QB. If you pay a price of more than two first rounders plus your own to take a quarterback he has to be a slam dunk. Should be like gem in the sun and everyone is reporting from practice wow this guys going to be amazing! The fact they don’t have a can’t miss how is this guy not playing RIGHT NOW even if he’s young kind of guy? That shows they paid to high a price, and then I don’t think even knew who they were picking. Their indecisiveness on a real plan is now coming back to bite them. IMO

  6. And nothing should change . See we have this irritant of a 49er beat writer out here stirring up the fan base against Jimmy and Kyle Shanahan and it’s working….but anybody that really knows football knows Trey Lance has no business being QB1 this season unless you want to throw the whole season away for the sake of his development.

We play to win this year with Jimmy, Trey should be ready next season and we can build a monster while he’s on his rookie contract. Kyle and John know what’s they’re doing.
