Running back Christian McCaffrey said there was a chance he could return in Week Five from his injured hamstring, but that turned out not to be the case.

It appears he has a better shot at playing against the Vikings in Week Six.

Head coach Matt Rhule told reporters in his Monday press conference that he’ll know more about McCaffrey’s situation on Wednesday, but he’s “hopeful” that McCaffrey will play this week.

McCaffrey injured his hamstring in Carolina’s Thursday victory over Houston in Week Three, an injury he feels happened in part because of the lack of recovery time between games. McCaffrey was a limited participant in all three days of practice last week before being listed as doubtful.

Rookie running back Chuba Hubbard has started in McCaffrey’s place for the last two games. After Hubbard rushed for 101 yards and caught five passes for 33 yards on Sunday, Rhule said the running back has played well.

“I think he’ll be a tremendous complement whenever Christian is back with us,” Rhule said.

  1. Between McCaffrey and Barkley, how much of their teams’ cap space is being eaten up by overpaid RBs on injured?

  2. It’s a great thing that this guy got such a huge contract just so he he can be injured all the time!

  3. At what point does Matt Rhule possibly move Christian McCaffrey to wide receiver full time? Christian’s body can’t take much more at the RB position. A lot of talent behind him too on the RB depth chart. Christian could play a Julian Edelman type role in the offense…playing inside out of the slot and/or split out. Christian is basically making right at WR money already.

  4. They should let him rest up for week 7. They have a bye this week playing Minnesota.

Bring back Cam Newton while you at it. Sam Darnold ain’t it.

Your Jets did everything they could to ruin the guy

  6. Turns out Sam Darnold is who I thought he was. Rhule thinks he’s at Temple or Baylor and he coaches that way. Teddy or Cam is better than Darnold. They cleared his path to start after bombing in NY.

He failed up! Lil Mac is not suited to play RB and everybody else knows that. The Panthers are in serious trouble. WR1 drops passes & I’m comparing Rhule to Meyer.

I guess you could call that making the best of a bad situation but at $16 million per year he’d be even more overpaid at WR. You could totally see this coming when they signed him to that contract: The only way to justify the deal is if he’s healthy all the time doing basically everything but the second he’s banged up it turns into a terrible deal for the team.
