Bruce Arians: Buccaneers have to think “next man up” with injuries in secondary

The Buccaneers’ already banged-up secondary suffered another loss when Richard Sherman exited Thursday night’s game with a hamstring injury, but coach Bruce Arians said after the game that he’s confident in the players the Buccaneers have.

Asked if the Bucs might look for another cornerback to add to the roster, Arians said he doesn’t see that happening.

“We’ll just keep playing with the guys we got, see how long of an injury it is, and next man up,” Arians said.

The Bucs have already placed cornerbacks Carlton Davis and Sean Murphy-Bunting on injured reserve, and safety Antoine Winfield missed Thursday night’s game with a concussion, although Arians said Winfield is doing better and probably could have played this week if it had been a Sunday game. Considering how unlucky the Bucs have been with injuries in the secondary, Arians was sounding an optimistic note about where they’ll be when they next take the field, on Sunday, October 24 against the Bears.

  1. The Packers have been operating on Next Man Up for as long as I can recall. This is new?

  2. or they could hope they continue to face QBs like Hurts who throw late and offtarget.

Eagles could’ve put up 40 on that defense (playing 4th string corners) if Hurts had any accuracy. Luckily 2 of his underthrown passes resulted in 90+ yards of pass interference penalties or else they would’ve been lucky to put up 7 points.

Maybe he needs corrective eyewear or something because that was bad for a college QB let alone one in the NFL.

  3. Of all the head coaches currently in the NFL, the one I like the least is Arians. He is another profane, arrogant big mouth, similar to the way Buddy Ryan and his son Rex were.
I root against the Bucs no matter who they play just because of Arians.

  4. Just keep Tom Brady healthy. Everything else will take care of itself. He’s won seven Super Bowls. Lots of guys were injured. As long as Tommy showed up, the rest of the team was fine.

  5. 2021 Bucs = 2011 Packers

Unstoppable offense, defense won’t hold up when it matters

  6. Fun fact;

Brady has never won a Super Bowl without being paired with a top 10 scoring defense.

  7. The sign of a good team. The secondary should be getting healthy soon. Not sure how much longer SMB will be out, but he’s got to be getting closer.

  8. Is anyone surprised at this? The Bucs are an old team and it’s a 17 game season. They barely beat Philly. They barely beat or lose to a lot of teams now. Brady threw 2 INTs and just faded off in the 2nd half.

    Long season.

  9. Injuries are part of the game, and Arians recognizes that and is not about to make excuses. Good on him.

The emergence of Fournette has given the Bucs so much more versatility. They are undoubtedly the favorites to win it all (again). And I say this as a Saints fan who believes my team can beat them when it counts most this year. But credit where credit is due. Next few months should be fun to watch

His antics were the same with the Cardinals.

Its amusing when you’re a loser. Intolerable if you’re a winner.

I’d say it’s the opposite. He’s fine when he’s winning. His stories are funny, he’s not on edge. It’s when things are going badly that he gets ugly like at the end with the Cards and the year with Winston. Guys constantly get thrown under the bus, everything is somebody else’s fault, and the stories are no longer funny because of his nasty undertones.

  12. ‘Is anyone surprised at this? The Bucs are an old team and it’s a 17 game season. They barely beat Philly. They barely beat or lose to a lot of teams now. Brady threw 2 INTs and just faded off in the 2nd half.’

I thought that PFT commentators actually followed the NFL. The Eagles never had a realistic chance to win that game – it was nowhere near as close as the score would indicate. And then – ‘They lose to a lot of teams now’? They have won 13 out of their last 14 games.

You should brush up on your math skills – or purchase a TV – or maybe both.

What are you talking about? They’re hurt worst in the secondary where they’re missing 3 out of 4 starters… and they’re all 24 or younger.
