The defensive front of the Tennessee Titans crashed through the line of scrimmage to stop Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen short on a fourth down quarterback sneak from the 3-yard line on fourth-and-inches to turn away the Bills and seal a 34-31 victory on Monday night.

Allen had made a leaping dive for the first down sticks on third down that saw him ruled down at the two-and-a-half yard line with 22 seconds left to play. Instead of kicking a chip shot field goal to force overtime, the Bills went for the win with Allen attempting to find daylight on the fourth down sneak. Jeffery Simmons crashed through the line and Allen lost his footing as he was stopped short to turn the ball back over to Tennessee with 21 seconds left.

Derrick Henry rushed for 143 yards and three touchdowns on the night for Tennessee as he carried the team’s offensive attack. His third score of the night, a 13-yard run with 3:05 left to play, gave the Titans their final lead. Bills returner Isaiah McKenzie had a 101-yard return touchdown wiped out on the ensuing kickoff due to a hold on Andre Smith Jr. The Bills still marched down to the Titans red zone to give themselves scoring chances that wouldn’t come to fruition.

The Titans managed to get the win despite losing several players throughout the night. Left tackle Taylor Lewan (concussion) and cornerback Caleb Farley (knee) were carted off, and returner Cameron Batson couldn’t put any weight on his leg as he was helped off the field just before halftime. Wide receiver Julio Jones (hamstring) and cornerback Chris Jackson (foot) were both forced from the game in the fourth quarter as well. Bills tight end Dawson Knox also was ruled out for the night due to an injured hand.

Allen threw for 353 yards with three touchdowns and an interception for the Bills in the loss. He provided almost all of Buffalo’s offensive firepower for the night.

Henry broke free on a 76-yard touchdown run to give the Titans a 7-6 lead in the second quarter. The Bills answered as Allen hit Stefon Diggs for a 14-yard touchdown on Buffalo’s next possession. After a 43-yard Randy Bullock field goal, Ryan Tannehill scored on a 4-yard touchdown run to give Tennessee a 17-13 lead.

Cole Beasley caught a 29-yard touchdown pass from Allen late in the half as the Bills took a 20-17 lead into the break.

After a 52-yard Tyler Bass field goal extended the Buffalo lead, Henry’s second score of the night put the Titans back on top, 24-23. Allen found Tommy Sweeney for 1-yard touchdown and made the two-point conversion on a variation of the “Philly Special” with a throwback pass from Knox to Allen to give the Bills a 31-24 lead inside the final minute of the third quarter.

Bullock’s 38-yard field goal made it 31-27 before Henry’s third score gave the Titans the lead for good.

Tannehill completed 18 of 29 passes for 216 yards with an interception for Tennessee. Seven of the completions were to A.J. Brown for a total of 91 yards.

Diggs had 89 yards and a touchdown. Beasley had 88 yards and a touchdown. Emmanuel Sanders had 91 yards receiving for Buffalo on the night.

  1. Shout out to TN. That was an amazing game – and you’re a true rival.

So happy w/ McD’s decision to go for it. This Bills team is all in. They went undefeated after the last soul-crushing, pre-bye loss, so here’s hoping for a repeat.

  2. And like I said after last weeks games 5-0 is better than 4-1, now make it 6-0 is better than 4-2, the Bills are pretenders and the Cards are the real deal!

  3. Great game.
Josh Allen takes so many hard hits on qb runs especially for a franchise qb. With so much talk about Lamar longevity, why the same not asked about Allen?
Lamar would have been roasted for that dive for first down then Allen landed on his head.

  4. Where does Derrick rank in NFL history for most 50 plus yard runs? It’s crazy how many he seems to have every year.

  5. I don’t blame you all for being mad, if I jumped on the Bills “they’re the #1 team in the power ranking” bandwagon last week at 4-1 over a 5-0 team and then to get thrown off the wagon the very next week I’d be mad too!

The good news is they have a really soft schedule until week 12(Saints) and 14(Bucs), the rest of their remaining schedule is a cake walk all the way to the playoffs!

  6. I get being aggressive. I don’t care for being that aggressive when you could extend the game.

  7. Rough performance for the Bills leading into the bye, but with second best team in the AFCE just dropping one to the Jags, and the other 2 irrelevant, the division is already locked up. Lots of time to right the ship.

  8. Poyer tackled on the first Henry TD run, but they have no problem calling the kickoff back. But that’s not what lost them the game. What lost them the game was McDermott calling the time outs in the red zone giving the reeling Titans defense a chance to breathe. WHY ARE YOU CALLING TIME OUTS WHEN IT SHOULD BE THE TITANS DOING IT! If you force them to call the time outs and not you, you have all 3 time outs after the stop with 22 seconds left. You’d have an opportunity to get the ball back and possibly be in FG range.

  9. this brainless cult of going for every single 4th & short has got to stop. its bad football. and if you must go for it on 4th, then come with something better than a qb sneak, that’s something you would expect from a Mike Mccarthy.

  10. Anyone getting that volume of carries can put up those numbers. Henry’s biggest skills are his height and weight

  11. And the Cardinals crushed the Titans. Yet somehow, Florio will find a new top team and bypass the Cardinals. He will come up with some reason why the Texans will be the team to expose AZ.

  12. Every game counts. Hoping McD’s decision not to take the easy points/tie, doesn’t cost them playoff seeding or even a division title.

  13. Bills went for the win. I’m proud of them for going for it. Had Allen not lost his footing, the game probably ends differently. Good ok then for going for it regardless. That was a fun game to watch.

  14. I wonder if the Bills fans will be happy playing in Tennesee instead of Buffalo for the AFC championship game thanks to a boneheaded decision by the HC.

  15. I fully support the Bills decision to go for it with the game on the line. That shows faith and respect in your players’ abilities. It’s the mindset of a winning franchise.

Three yards is the difference between being a pretender and being the real deal? Hahahahashaha. I don’t think so!

  17. The Bills do have the luxury of playing in possibly the worst division in the NFL so they can afford a few mulligans along the way though. Going into ot there wouldn’t have been the end of the world

  18. i know people will argue since a QB automatically gets the nod…

but Derek Henry is the best player in the NFL right now. if he keeps this up, which he looks like he will , how do you not give him thr MVP?

  19. McDermott is a dope and his game day decisions are the weakness of the Bills and the train they are 4-2 instead of 6-0.

  20. McDermott is a dope and his game day decisions are the weakness of the Bills and the reason they are 4-2 instead of 6-0.

  21. I only saw one replay of the pass to Beasley a few plays before Allen was stopped. I would like to have seen more and more mention of it by the announcers. I looked to me like the ball crossed the goal line as his knee touched the turf. Should have been a score I think. But the Bills ran a hurry up play next and the pass was never reviewed. Anyway, the Bills didn’t not play their best and Tennessee was ready and deserved the win.

  22. As a Bills fan, I tip my hat to the Titans. They out-muscled and out-fought the Bills for all 60 minutes of the game.

To be honest, I don’t even feel that bad about this loss. First – “Any Given Sunday” and all that. Second, this loss just highlighted the areas where the Bills have been having problems all season – just in time for the bye week so the Bills have a chance to do a little fixing.

All season, the Bills have had problems in the red zone, the right side of the offensive line has been a little suspect, and the pass rush isn’t.

With this team, and this leadership? I think the Bills will come back stronger after the bye.

  23. That was the right call to go for it. The execution on the other hand was piss poor.

Henry is the total definition of a bell cow back. I Really think he is the best power back since Earl Campbell. The problem with power backs is they never get you a ring and are short lived. He is the Nigerian nightmare with soft hands and better feet. Enjoy watching him because they don’t come around often and are not here long.

I agree – it feels like the “young, cool coach” thing to do these days. I don’t think you should ever leave points on the table, especially when you have a chance to tie the game.

I also have to say, it’s amazing how Henry blew past everyone on that 76 yard TD run. It’s easy to forget how fast he is because he’s so big.

  25. I like the call of the Bills going for the win and not the tie. Had Allen not been stuffed, we’d be talking about the brilliance of McDermott and his decision.

  26. The Bills were evidentally scared of OT or they would have kicked the three.well they paid the ultimate price for stupidity,a big Loss.

  27. While I do understand Bills Mafia likes this road trip, it would be nice to have these Titans in Orchard Park sometime…on a Sunday 1pm game!

  28. Bills won the 1st half, Titans won the game. Crazy how they let Henry get loose, so often. If they keep playing Allen like that, he won’t be around for long. Same for Jackson, they’re amazing athletes, but you can’t replicate a running QB like you can a passing QB, so when the backup has to come in, they’re both in trouble.

  29. Just a great game and I’m not a fan of either team. Derrick Henry is such a rare talent that I don’t even know who to compare him to. Allen is a stud QB. Just hope he stops putting himself in danger. Taking on linebackers head on isn’t good for anyone’s franchise player. Coaches have to rein him in before he gets seriously hurt.

  30. The Bills when they play against a real team, will start to crumble. Their schedule is the definition of the cupcake schedule.

  31. Not sure I get why Allen doesn’t receive anything close to the same hype as Lamar and DeShaun (back when DeShaun was playing). He didn’t win but threw for 350 with 3 TDs and 1 pick and everybody acts like it’s nothing. I think Lamar is a stud athlete and unique the way he plays but I think when he threw for over 300 yards the 2nd time in his career a game or two ago there were full articles written about that? The Bills lost, so maybe that’s the end game, but when you watch Allen play you are seeing a top 5 QB in this league and he’s only getting better every year.

  32. Didn’t the Bills just beat KC? Want to tell Chiefs fans they don’t have a real team?

3yds, nah it wasn’t the 3yds. It was losing to the Steelers who then went out and lost their next 3 in a row and then losing to a 3-2 team who lost to the Jets, THE JETS THAT’S SAD!

OH that and not having any kind of meaningful running game beyond Josh, then there’s the marshmellow schedule.

This should move the Bills to #8 behind the Cards, six 5-1 teams and the Titans, that’s one hell of a drop in one week!

They won’t drop to 8, and it doesn’t matter if they do. No one gets crowned in October.

At least you’re not calling Allen a bust anymore.

Just wow…in a 17 game season, do not count out Mahomes/Chiefs…way premature.
