Jimmy Garoppolo will start against the Colts on Sunday night.

Garoppolo missed Week Five with a calf injury, but he used the bye week to recover and was able to practice every day this week. The 49ers did not give him an injury designation on Friday’s injury report, which leaves him set to start this weekend.

Trey Lance has been ruled out with the knee sprain he suffered while starting in place of Garoppolo, so he won’t be available as a change of pace at quarterback.

It looks like the 49ers will be without left tackle Trent Williams as well. He is listed as doubtful with ankle and elbow injuries, so it will be a surprise if he’s in the lineup.

Defensive tackles Javon Kinlaw (knee) and Maurice Hurt (calf) will not play. Linebacker Marcell Harris (thumb) is listed as questionable.

  1. While I understand the allure of the talent of Trey Lance….they may well regret the choice and the draft.

Coming from the offense he ran in college, he was going to need SOME time to adjust to the pros. Yes he is a plus athlete, but he was making big scrambles and running against much lower level of competition than other QBs in the draft pool.

He just did not throw that much. He threw well it seems, but not much in his college offense. Thats a huge jump to make to the NFL, even Pat Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers got to sit a year or more.

The 49ers gave up a lot to move up to #3 to take him. I would think..if they had stayed a bit lower, could have had Mac Jones or Justin Fields–both more NFL ready and then cut Jimmy G and perhaps traded for a nick foles or another QB as a veteran backup.

OR take Lance but get a Foles as the backup and let him develop. Lance isn’t ready to run the full offense for a while, and Jimmy G gets hurt so much he isn’t ideal as a starter, so Lance can’t play a few snaps, he has to actually play.

Maybe the 49ers should have gotten a vet backup like foles and kept Lance as the 3rd qb-only using him as needed for a change of pace or the experience.

Now they have an oft injured started or a green rookie. Not idea for a team built to win now, and all their other injuries aren’t helping, especially in the loaded NFC west.

That being said, as a Jets fan…sigh, I think I would have preferred to see Zack Wilson sit a year behind a Nick Foles, but the current Jets admin decided against it. He will take his lumps (and plenty more are coming Sunday) but I hope it doesn’t ruin him the way it might have ruined Darnold.

  2. Ok, Lance played for the Marshall (MN) Tigers in HS, and then went to NDSU who dominated his whole time there (1 year and 1 game). Look at his highlights from NDSU, yes he can run but almost all of his touchdowns were wide open receivers. How much can San Fran put up with draws up the middle?

  3. We all saw this coming, huge overreach in the draft. Why even Draft this guy when you have Jimmi g.? 49’ers are toast

  4. Coming from the offense he ran in college, he was going to need SOME time to adjust to the pros. Yes he is a plus athlete, but he was making big scrambles and running against much lower level of competition than other QBs in the draft pool.

While he needs experience he did come out of a pro style offense. So this is not completely true.

  5. Kyle Shanahan is among the very best offensive designers (if that’s a thing) in the league. Trey Lance has exceptional raw physical talent. Not just athletic talent, but he has all the physical gifts of a great QB. That can be very enticing for a coach. Keep in mind Tom Brady is perhaps the least athletic QB I’ve seen. It’s way, way, way too early to even think about evaluating Lance, but it will be interesting to see what the master offensive magician can do with the physically gifted young QB. Josh Allen is still improving. Lamar Jackson is still improving. Dak Prescott, too. There sure is a lot to learn at that position. It doesn’t happen overnight. I think that’s why Jed York gave Shanahan a six year contract. He’s not going to find a better coach.

  6. Trey Lance is a bust!!! Blake Bortles 2.0: bad throwing mechanics, poor footwork, terrible decision making. Way to go Niners, you mortgaged your future for a player who resembles a RB more than a QB.

  7. Time will tell with Trey Lance,if he can develop into a franchise QB and show the fan base clear and necessary improvement. I really thought in my heart of hearts the 49ers were drafting Mack Jones at the #3 spot. Kyle Shanahan not only bet 3 1st round picks, but also his job on Trey Lance becoming the man in San Francisco.
