Jimmy Garoppolo was back at quarterback for the 49ers on Sunday night, but he couldn’t bring their losing streak to an end.

The 49ers fell to the Colts 30-18 on a stormy night in Santa Clara and Garoppolo was 16-of-27 for 181 yards, a touchdown, a lost fumble, and two interceptions. After the game, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was asked if Garoppolo would start again in Week Eight against the Bears.

Shanahan alluded to questions about Trey Lance‘s health while giving a less than enthusiastic commitment to Garoppolo.

“I would guess so,” Shanahan said, via Jennifer Lee Chan of NBCSportsBayArea.com. “I will watch this tape and see if guys are healthy, first of all, and know where our guys are at. It was good for Jimmy to get healthy enough to play in this game today.”

Shanahan added that he didn’t see “a ton of bad decisions” from Garoppolo, but there weren’t enough good things either and that will keep questions about the quarterback spot front and center for the 49ers.

  1. If Lance is healthy, give him the first-team reps for the rest of the season. The 49ers are pretty much out of the playoffs already. Get your new QB the reps he needs to become a starter.

  2. When you dont spend money in free agency or get anything out of your last two draft classes, compounded by injuries to your starters and no playmakers in the secondary you get this kind of year.

The 49ers front office just can’t compete with the Cardinals and Rams front office. It was an arms race and the Rams added Stafford, Ramsey, D Jax etc, The Cardinals added AJ Green, D Hopkins, Zach Ertz and JJ Watts….and the 49ers added Alex Mack? Couldn’t even attain Jadaveon Clowney. The 49ers front office is the problem. Then you have to worry about Kyle Shanahan checking out because he didn’t finish his job in Cleveland. So you never know how a person who didn’t finish his job or see something through before is going to react when things get rough. Am interesting year to say the least but this is eerily looking like Harbaugh’s last season with us.

  3. Whats worse? The Niners spending all of that draft capital to move up and draft Trey Lance, OR, the Dolphins choosing Tua over Herbert?

  4. OK I know this will sound line whining to more than a few but I’m stating my point none the less. BTW I’m neutral on Garoppolo; I’m a suffering Bears fan. Watching last night’s game, looking at Garoppolo’s stat line and hearing the criticism; I’ve decided to speak out. I suggest the NFL take a concept from MLB; the error. I’m really tired of receivers who should have caught a pass don’t and to make matters worse they tip it up only to have it picked and show up as an interception. Where’s the receivers accountability in the pick? Just like baseball the game would keep going and the pick will be classifies an interception or an error on the receiver. We count drops but not contributory pick?

  5. Shanahan should be fired if Jimmy G continues to start. This is a rebuilding team, NOT a championship contender. You’re wasting time of you think it’s anything else.

  6. Good decisions and a slippery ball leads to bad play. RB’s and Kittle are out of the lineup. Garoppolo is their best QB right now. It’s not like he has Joe Montana sitting on his bench. You play your best guys.

That’s why coaches watch the tape before they make decisions. We might not take the stuff you’re talking about into consideration, but the coaches do.
