Stephen Ross “not dealing with” questions about Deshaun Watson

Dolphins owner Stephen Ross wants to trade for quarterback Deshaun Watson. Ross also wants to not be fined for tampering, presumably.

Via Mark Maske of the Washington Post, Ross declined to address questions from reporters about a potential trade for Watson.

“I know what it’s about and I’m not dealing with it,” Ross said.

That’s all he can say. The rules prohibit an owner, coach, G.M., etc. from expressing public interest in a player under contract with another team. Although the tampering rules are sporadically enforced, there’s no reason to risk catching the league’s attention.

When Tom Brady was approaching free agency in early 2020, Ross said the Dolphins aren’t interested. It’s permissible to do that. The violation arises if Ross says he’s interested.

Meanwhile, Ross doesn’t need to say it. He is. By next Tuesday, Watson is likely to be traded to the Dolphins or the Panthers.

  1. Local Miami media has reported Ross hasn’t been pushing for a trade. A direct conflict with the “oligarch” reporting of the subject from NY media.

  2. I think that’s all anyone really needs to know about the Dolphins owner, Droopy Dog.

He’s not interested in the greatest quarterback to ever play the game when the only compensation involved was money (not that Brady was going to Miami), but he is interested in Watson who comes with 100% uncertainty about his playing future and it will still take a King’s Ransom to acquire him.

Other than Marino from a statistical standpoint, the Dolphins have not been relevant since the Nixon Administration. Droopy Dog is making sure that streak stays intact……

  3. The only question any potential trade partner should ask themselves: what is the impact in his career if he is convicted in one of the criminal case.

  4. The real question for Dolphin fans (the 75-80 remaining) is when will the owner be traded?

  5. The favorite TV show of the author of this story seems to be “Seinfeld.” So I’m going to use a quote from Elaine Benes, from the episode about the Rosses being told — by Elaine — that George Costanza did NOT have a home in the Hamptons.

“I told ’em you didn’t,” Elaine said. “And then I laughed, and laughed, and laughed.”

And that’s what a LOT of us are going to do when the trade deadline comes and goes, and Watson is still in Houston.

    Laugh, and laugh, and laugh.

  6. How about this question then, “Why did you draft Tua Tagolovoa instead of Justin Herbert?”

Do you not realize the MASSIVE age difference between Brady and Watson? The Dolphins, even with Brady wouldnt have been superbowl contenders and because of his age you dont have time to build around where as Watson, if not jailed, you have time to build around to hope to compete. The dolphins arent a qb or 1 piece away so you dont bring in a qb with a limited window that you wont be able to out a competitive team around. So as much as you can say thei being managed ineptly, what your suggesting would be just as bad.

You mean Tua that was thought of higher universally before the draft? The same tua who the year before all that was heard was “Tank for Tua” until his injury and Burrows ascension from nowhere? Tua who had taken snaps under center in college unlike Herbert that was thought to be a project? Its funny how so many people are either clueless or just want to change narratives after the fact

The Dolphins are where they are under Ross, Grier and Flores. I’ll let their record, their mind-numbingly inept personnel decisions (in both free agency and the draft) speak for themselves.

  10. Clearly the media and “reporters” are more interested in a Watson trade than Watson or any potential team.

Yet not a thing you said refuted what I wrote, all you did was stick your fingers in your ears and doubled down and dumbness. Not once did I say they have a great track record or have made amazing decisions or said anything close to that. What I said was in response to YOU trying to say their inept BECAUSE they wouldnt go after Brady but they are going after Watson and citing that as why their inept.
