Saints quarterback Jameis Winston appeared to be seriously injured against the Buccaneers on Sunday, and he apparently was seriously injured.

The Saints fear an anterior cruciate ligament tear for Winston, a source confirms to PFT, but it’s not official yet. Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports Winston also could have damage to the medial collateral ligament.

Saints coach Sean Payton said after the Saints’ unexpected victory over the Bucs that Winston has a “significant” injury.

An tear of his ACL would end Winston’s season.

Trevor Siemian, who replaced Winston, said after the game he is “frickin gutted” for Winston, via Amie Just of The Times-Picayune.

Winston was hurt with 12:21 remaining in the second quarter when he was dragged to the ground by Bucs linebacker Devin White and his left leg bent awkwardly. White was penalized for a horse collar tackle.

Winston completed 6 of 10 passes for 56 yards and a touchdown before exiting.

Taysom Hill, who competed for the starting job in training camp, remains out with a concussion.

  1. “No player shall grab the inside collar of the back or the side of the shoulder pads or jersey, or grab the jersey at the name plate or above, and pull the runner toward the ground”

  2. From Bengals Nation: Here’s to wishing him a speedy recovery. Great game by his teammates to get the win for him.

  3. Saints find their answer at qb, JW may be done as a starter in the NFL…
He’ll be like Ryan Fitzpatrick, Josh McCown, Alex Smith and float from team to team…

  4. Did the same injury falling off a small wall. ACL, MCL, and probably meniscus. I felt shivers watching it after my experience. He’s got a long rehab ahead.

The sports reporters will say ACL injury like its nothing. Its not. ACL+ Meniscus igivrs you a high probability of osteo arthritis later in life. You dont come bsck the same: you ARE different.

Wishing him a good surgeon, a speedy recovery, and no complications.

  5. This is why a horse collar is so dangerous. It’s not just the upper body that can be injured. That was a dirty play, and it ended Winston’s season.

  6. There really should be a rule that if a player is injured on a personal foul, that the offending player has to sit out until the injured player returns or 4 games, whichever is shorter.

  7. Sucks that Jameis went down on a crappy horse collar tackle. I want to see him lose to the Bucs fair and square, preferably after he throws a pick 6.

  8. It’s one thing when a player has a fluke injury. But this was an illegal tackle — specifically designed to protect players from this kind of gruesome injury — and Devin White does it anyway. White grabs and pulls him down violently with a horse-collar tackle. Totally unnecessary. Potentially ruined a man’s career. Just sickening.

  9. So sorry for Jameis. I hope he comes back stronger than ever. Now I digress. Are you telling me, The New Orleans Saints beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the immortal GOAT Tom Brady with a 3rd string QB? Impossible! Wait a minute, here. Are my eyes deceiving me? Did Tom Brady who leads the league in comeback victories throw a pick 6 in the last minute of the game when a field goal would have won the game for them? The Saints defense was really feeling themselves today I guess. Congratulations to them. Talking about earning a win under the most dire circumstances.

  10. Did any of you actually watch the replay? It wasn’t a horse collar tackle . White grabbed him by the sleeve of his jersey and yanked him down .

  11. Bucs are undisciplined team , dirty play on Winston , I think they are the most penalized team , starts with the coach .

  12. The League needs a cumulative foul system to get dirty players like White off the field.
