Mike Zimmer on consecutive timeouts: “I screwed up”

With 1:04 remaining in the fourth quarter, Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer called a timeout on defense. After the timeout, just before the Cowboys snapped the ball, Zimmer called timeout again. That’s a no-no.

NFL teams can’t call consecutive timeouts, and the officials are supposed to ignore a second timeout call. But the officials wrongly granted the timeout, and by rule, being granted a second timeout is defensive delay of game, a five-yard penalty.

Zimmer took the blame on himself afterward.

“I screwed up,” Zimmer said. “I forgot that I called one. Somebody yelled at me. I knew the play that they were running, it was really the same play that they hit against us for a long touchdown. Somebody said ‘call timeout’ and I did. The official wasn’t supposed to grant it. They’re supposed to not — anyway, it’s not his fault. So we ended up getting a five-yard penalty.”

Even worse than the two timeouts were what the Vikings did afterward: Allowed Ezekiel Elliott to turn a short pass into a third-and-11 conversion, and then allowed the game-winning touchdown on the next play. Zimmer’s screwup was bad, but his defense’s performance after that was worse.

  1. Da da da daa, da da da daa, hey hey, GOODBYE Mike Zimmer.

    Sincerely,
    Life long frustrated Viking fan

  2. Backup QB Cooper ate them up while the Vikings were napping. Kirk Cousins looked like he never played football before. Well deserved boos from Viking fans in the stands.

  3. Hopefully, this will be Zimmer’s last year with the Vikings, and he can go “screw up” on another team.

  4. There were 3 mistakes – one by zimmer, one by the refs, one by the vikings players. The Refs were the only ones able to pretend they didn’t screw up.

Regardless of Zeke catching the ball he should’ve been brought down short of the sticks.

Vikings are going to be just good enough to not get Zimmer fired but yet not make the playoffs.

  5. The defense was exhausted by being on the field too much with all the 3 and outs. Zimmers gone.

  6. Cutting edge clock management here, even fooled the refs. Zimmer playing checkers again.

  7. They got a 4th timeout when refs left a ball rolling around on the field and stopped the clock.

  8. I continually see Zimmer and the players saying they are flat, come out flat, low energy. Players should be motivated by the millions of dollars they earn. I have seen more motivation by the $12 an hour convenience store worker. Coaching leadership is stagnant at the very best, so predictable we knew the next play while sitting there watching the game. Too much talent to be this bad so then it must be coaching.

  9. Coach, it’s I knew the play “We” were running out there, not “they” were running out there. Zimmer is disengaged from a team he created and, ostensibly, leads.

  10. I see a lot of people here calling for Zimmer’s head but what about Cousins?, that guy sucks.

Maybe so, maybe Spielman too, but it absolutely must start with Zimmer. IMHO, the sooner the better. This season and this team is lost under his direction.

  12. Even when Zim “takes responsibility” he has to blame “someone who said call timeout”. The Dude is 10-15 in his last 25 regular season games. Not good.

And yet if Anthony Barr wasn’t playing so soft Zeke is short of first down yardage and OT is a worst-case scenario. Plenty of blame to go around to explain why Minnesota’s been mediocre throughout the Cousins era.

If money is their only motivation for playing football, they will probably lose more than they win. The $12/hr person is motivated because if they aren’t they will be on the street eating out of dumpsters if they get canned.

  14. Can someone explain to me why Randy Gregory wasn’t ejected? He had a personal foul for a late hit on Cousins & then another for a late hit out of bounds. I thought two personal fouls were an automatic ejection? I know these were ticky tac fouls but shouldn’t he have been gone after that? I remember losing Harrison Smith in a game for two personal fouls.

  15. Isn’t it unsportsmanlike penalties that get you bounced from a game, as opposed to personal fouls??

  16. Steve… it’s unsportsmanlike penalties that get you ejected not personal fouls. Players would be ejected left and right for just personal fouls.
