Aaron Rodgers violated COVID protocol by doing maskless indoor press conferences

The NFL won’t come right out and say it. Then again, the NFL doesn’t have to.

Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has been conducting in-person press conferences in the Green Bay facility without wearing a mask. Because he was secretly unvaccinated, Rodgers violated the rules.

The rules come straight from the regular-season COVID protocol, to which the NFL and NFL Players Association agreed. Here’s the operative sentence: “All players and staff who are not fully vaccinated must wear masks (surgical masks are preferred; gaiters and masks with valves or vents are prohibited) at all times when inside the Club facility.”

Because interview rooms are in the club facility, unvaccinated players must wear masks in the interview rooms. Rodgers consistently hasn’t.

The Packers possibly will say it’s not for them to enforce the league’s protocols; the league would disagree. As NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy told PFT earlier tonight, the “primary responsibility is on the club, which can discipline a player or personnel.” If the team wasn’t disciplining Rodgers for his violations of the league’s protocols, the Packers will have a major problem — and other teams already are paying attention.

As one source explained it to PFT on Wednesday, the league can’t monitor every team for compliance by every unvaccinated player. If the Packers didn’t fine Rodgers for not wearing a mask during press conferences in the facility, Green Bay will (or at least should) get whacked by the league office.

Other questions become relevant. Will the NFL be as aggressive with the Packers as they would have been with, for example, with the Saints or the Patriots? How close was/is NFL general counsel Jeff Pash with Packers CEO Mark Murphy? (As one source told PFT on Wednesday, they’re good friends.)

The league presumably doesn’t want to make the biggest story of the week even bigger by publicly acknowledging that Rodgers was violating the protocols and/or that the Packers failed to discipline him. Still, there’s a decent chance that the Packers gave Rodgers a pass given the broader strain and stress on the relationship. If they did, will the NFL give Green Bay a pass, too?

The NFL is surely hoping for the next wave of bright, shiny objects to take attention away from this issue, starting with Jets-Colts on Thursday night. But with the reigning MVP out for 10 days at a minimum, it’s not going away. And when he finally comes back and talks to the media, it will be interested to see what he says, how he says it, and how the various constituencies in the media react to it.

Separately, it will be very interesting to see what the league does about all of this, given the manner in which the league has hammered other teams for other violations.

  1. An ex-NFL quarterback who lied to the world about his vaccination status and put his teammates and colleagues in jeopardy. Who is Aaron Rodgers?

  2. Good job! Now we just need to count how many violations where there is a photo or video and there is no way nfl can give him the special “ignore” treatment reserved for premier stars. The real count maybe 100s but 10 is probably enough I would guess?

  3. “bright, shiny objects to take attention away from this issue, starting with Jets-Colts on Thursday night.”

Yeah, that Jets-Colts game oughta do it . . .

  4. I really hope the league doesn’t slither its way out of this one. Aaron flat-out lied about his status, put people and their families at risk, and now is not going to be there for his teammates. What a chump he is, but the league and the team are bigger chumps for rolling the dice on Aaron not getting Covid (while keeping his secret for him) and coming up snake eyes. I hope this gets much bigger than it already is!

  5. Florio, I appreciate that you regularly call out The League on their inconsistencies. Someone needs to try to keep them honest. Thanks.

  6. At a minimum Rogers should be suspended for 4 games, the team fined a few hundred thousand dollars and the team should lose first round draft picks.
This was a serious breach of protocol during a pandemic that has cost over 700,000 Americans their lives!

  7. Can someone explain how the NFL wouldn’t know whether ARod–or any player–is or isn’t vaccinated…? Didn’t players have to prove they were vaccinated via card so the NFL could verify it…? Or you’re telling me they were using the honor system and just taking players at their word without verifying it…?

  8. No passes. No slaps on the wrist. Rodgers and the Packers deserve the same consequences any other team would get for a similar violation. I’ll always be a Packers fan, but the entire league suffers at even a suggestion of favoritism. Hand down the penalties they deserve, and let’s move on. Hopefully wiser.

  9. Its obvious that he has been violating protocols. The protocols are pretty strict, the media would have noticed if Aaron was traveling on a different plane from the rest of the team, and not leaving his hotel during away games.

They need to suspend him for a while. It wont be long before the media starts comparing this situation to Cam’s, and wondering what was the difference.

  10. Does each violation carry the same $14,650 fine?

Or would multiple violations result in suspension?

  11. What will be really interesting is seeing whether he wears a mask going forward. I say the league needs to make the team forfeit every game he played in where he cheated the system during the week or during the game. Ban hammer time. Would be nice to see Arizona undefeated like they should be…

  12. Based on Rodgers statement in August, the team had every reason to believe he was vaccinated based on his direct answer and follow up..
The real question fir any employee is what do you do if your employee lied about their vaccination status?
So much of this grey area with the pandemic, but one thing is clear, based on Rodgers own words, the team had every right to assume he was vaccinated, unlike Lazard and other players that wore masked and freely admitted they were not.

  13. No need to go soft on the Packers. They’re the one team lacking a billionaire owner, so Roger Goodell does not have to bend the knee and sweep this all under the rug.

  14. The league would rather fine Cowboys receiver CeeDee Lamb for wearing his socks too low or not tucking in his jersey, instead of treating this seriously. I love the game but hate how the league is run.

  15. Workplaces with mask mandates are allowed to remove mask in certain situations.

Eating or drinking for example. Or in Rodgers’ case, main speaker or presenter with the audience set at a distance. In fact, our provincial premier and city mayor does this all the time – they remove their mask at the podium to speak.

  16. There has to be one set of rules. Not one of rules for Green Bay and different set for the rest of the league. Rodgers reportedly petitioned the NFL to have an alternative treatment count as being vaccinated against COVID but was denied.

Case closed — he was not vaccinated, he violated the rules.

Put your wallet with $128 million down Goodell and take action against Rodgers

  17. What we are forgetting here is that Rodgers is an NFL player. Therefore he believes he has the right to do what ever he wants to do when he wants to do it — such as not show up when he is under contract, or demand to be traded, or criticize his bosses when they are just doing the job they are paid to do, or to not be vaccinated and not wear a mask.
I am shocked that PFT doesn’t understand that rules for NFL players are different than they are for everyone else! It’s nothing new. NFL players and other pro athletes have always had rules bent for them!
Rodgers should be suspended for this clear violation of league rules. If he isn’t, it’s another example of stars being treated differently than “ordinary” players. Because if he were the 4th TE on the roster, he’d be suspended for sure!!
I, for one, can’t wait until Aaron Rodgers is out of the NFL. It’s all about him and his giant ego and I think the great majority of fans are tired of him. I imagine some of his teammates are tired of him, too, but they can’t say so because they know how much power he wields in Green Bay.
Here’s a vote for Jordan Love playing well on Sunday and helping to push Aaron Rodgers out to pasture.

  18. I can just see Rodgers now:
“Because there is an ongoing investigation, I cannot comment on it”.
The Packers will say the same thing.
“The NFL” will say the same thing.
Enter the next wave of bright, shiny objects.

  19. What arrogance. Rodgers likes to act like he’s so superior to everyone else. Won’t deny he’s a talented to QB but he thinks he knows it all. COVID unfortunately, doesn’t think so. A perspective Jeopardy host should know better.

  20. This should be interesting. One of the leagues top MVP candidates and possible NFC championship teams violating the rules. Rodgers knew the team would do nothing because of all the turmoil he created in the offseason so he rubbed their face in it. Now the entire franchise may suffer for it. I’m a Rodgers fan but have always been a team first person. Team may be fined, lose draft picks and Rodgers suspended. This story is not going away like the league hopes.

  21. This guy is really a weird man. Between this, his holdout all summer and never wanting to play for the Packers again, isolating himself from his family , seems like he craves attention in a strange sort of way. One of the best quarterbacks ever, but as a person, not so much

  22. Bet there is more to this, like he has a waiver to not wear a mask, or something…He’s a complicated fella

  23. Will other players — on the Packers or on other teams — have to sit out because they came in close contact with an infected Rodgers?

Also, what sanctions could the NFL impose on Rodgers or on the Packers?

  24. Vaxxed and pissed off Packer fan here. And disappointed Rodgers fan. Bamboozled is not a word I use often but fitting here. I was Team Rodgers this off season. Dude just wanted to win, right? Get him the weapons, right? Both Packers and Rodgers effed this up big time. What’s that phrase, the coverup is worse than the crime. Sounds like lots knew and just said what the hell it’s fine. Obviously the nfl didn’t care because he petitioned and they said no. They then never watched a game after just in case he pulls this crap. BS all around.

  25. How can the NFL (or humanity…) NOT throw the book at both Mr. Diva and the team. Putting all the other mere mortals at risk is beyond unacceptable.

  26. Rodgers is a selfish baby and He’ll get away with it because, and only because, Green Bay has been getting preferential treatment for years by the NFL, Both on and off the field!

  27. None of this will matter until the NFL gets sued by some player it tries to enforce its rules against. That player will have good evidence that the NFL does not consistently enforce its rules, and does so only when they want to, which is arbitrary and capricious (lawyer words). The Nfl, by not enforcing a clear rule in the face of clear evidence of a violation, risks the ability to enforce that rule against anybody else.

  28. The fact that he designed his own personal rules at the expense of everyone else makes this his Ryan Braun or Lance Armstrong moment. He can do good things for the betterment of mankind until the sun no longer rises, but he’ll always be a self-indulgent jerk. What an idiot, and I have supported and defended him forever. No excuse. Bring on Jordan Love and don’t look back. I don’t care if they go 0-9 the rest of the way (although they may still win the division!)

  29. Rodgers is one of the top 3 most well known players in the league. When Rodgers asked the NFL for “special dispensation” for approval of his “alternate immunization treatment,” every bigwig with the Packers and the league must have been aware of that. And when the league said “No” every bigwig with the Packers and the league knew that, too. It’s Aaron freaking Rodgers.

How could the Packers/NFL then let him do all this maskless/indoor/team airplane stuff and then claim they didn’t know he was unvaccinated? It stinks, and I hate all the mask protocols.

  30. With the team Halloween party this past week and Rodgers attending, I wouldn’t put it past more tests showing up positive. That is if the tests don’t get lost until after the game.

  31. What’s the point of having protocols if they’re not enforced? Since everyone in the Packers organization knew, I wonder how they the NFLPA is going to play this? Also, why has nobody asked, or even brought up, what proof is being submitted to show vaccination status?

  32. Time to fine the Packers and penalize draft picks including a first rounder. Aaron Rodgers should be suspended. This is now a matter of health and lives.

  33. There needs to be large cumulative fines against he and the team as well as suspensions per the rules given how many violations occurred

  34. I hope the Packers just cut him for jeopardizing his teammates health, and frankly his own health as the leader of the team. His lies and reckless behavior put the rest of the team in a difficult position to compete, starting with this weekend’s game against KC. It’s a team sport, with no room for divas.

  35. I don’t see how the NFL can turn a blind eye here. They have already fined several teams. This is egregious and just plain reckless. Aaron Rogers is really a fool to think his voodoo magic herbal remedy was the same as vaccination.

  36. I still haven’t read/heard. How do we know he was not vaccinated? Who is asserting that fact? Did he admit it? Did the team admit it? I’ve seen neither.
Just because he got Covid does not mean he was not vaxed. We all know that.
So, can you please report who has asserted he was never vaccinated?

  37. It will be fun to watch the self anointed “smartest guy in the room” try to talk his way out this one. Doubt there will be any admission that he lied. Doubt that he will eat a slice of humble pie. Instead, the self anointed “smartest guy in the room” will parse his words and attempt to talk his way out of this mess. It will be fun to watch.

  38. “Will the NFL be as aggressive with the Packers as they would have been with, for example, with the Saints or the Patriots?”

    Patriots : 4 games suspension
Packers : Slap on the wrist

  39. So do we see his unvaccinated status as a reason behind his antics this summer about playing?

  40. Probably will get swept under the rug, they already released a statement denying it.

  41. As the great philosopher Doc Holliday said in Tombstone: “It appears my hypocrisy knows no bounds.”

  42. After the facts come out, I suspect there will be nothing he can possibly say to endear him to me again. Very disappointing, as a fan and as a conscientious citizen and vaccinated patriot.

  43. Agree 100% with Jamie Wheeler…the league needs to take a firm stance on following the rules…not to mention setting an example to the nation that the NFL takes this virus seriously. A hefty fine and loss of draft pick(s) is most certainly in order. Failure to do so sends a message of incompetence and blatant favoritism. Trust me…had this happened to the Lions, Jaguars, or any of the league’s other irrelevant teams, it would be punishment up the gazoo.

  44. See Rudy Gobert. Athletes who not only feel rules don’t apply to them, contagious illnesses don’t apply to them either.

  45. This goes beyond following COVID protocols. It has to do with integrity and deception. Feeling sorry for all his fans and others who he has strung along and duped for most of the year, maybe longer. Is he dishonest? Well, he certainly doesn’t come across as being honest. Can he be trusted? That’s left up to the closest people around him to decide. They’ll find out in time. As for the NFL and it’s leaders, they’re all a sham. Too many double-standards.

  46. This isn’t hard. Fine the Packers $500,000+ for not enforcing league rules. Then fine and suspend Rogers for the rest of the season. The fine won’t really be anything for Aaron, so make this season a non accrued season to send the message that no player is above the leagues rules. Another year in Green Bay send Aaron a message that will definitely hit home.

  47. The NFL is a star-driven league, and Rodgers is a bonafide star. Those rules that everyone agreed to, they apply to the rank and file, not stars. The league will sit on its hands and save the mock outrage for when the same stunt is pulled by a guy playing special teams.

  48. Too bad his acts affect the entire league.
Tell me other AFC teams aren’t pissed that the Chiefs now get to face a Packers team with Love at the helm instead of Rodgers.

  49. The ironic part is that if the Packers lose any draft picks from this A.R. won’t care cuz he is outta there after the season no matter what happens. The man holds a grudge like no other.

  50. Seems a Mr. Brady received a four game suspension over “alleged” deflation of a football. I’d say at minimum that should be the starting point in determining appropriate discipline for someone who’s violations are out in plain sight for all to see.

  51. Rodgers has said he was “immunized” for covid. That sounds like he’s had it previously and is counting acquired immunity from the prior infection. There’s a lot of scientific evidence that recovery from covid provides more protection against future reinfection better than vaccination does (the whole point of vaccination is to induce the creation of antibodies which a person gets when infected).

  52. Didn’t the NFL already state that Rodgers did not violate protocols (even though he clearly did)?

  53. Everyone is commenting about no vaccine, no mask ,etc., why hasn’t anyone asked if he is actually sick or not ?

  54. Rodgers has said he was “immunized” for covid. That sounds like he’s had it previously and is counting acquired immunity from the prior infection.

If that was the argument he made to the league, the union, and their doctors (and I’m not certain it was), it didn’t work. He was still in violation of protocol. He still didn’t meet the league rules. He needlessly deceived others, and for what? To avoid wearing a mask? To prove how smart he is by pulling one over on the league, media, and fans…for a little while?

  55. Either he presented a fake vaccine card which would open him up to major penalties (NHL suspended Evander Kane for 1/4 of the season for that) OR the league has been using the honor system which calls into question all their statements about vaccination percentages. How many more guys are really not vaccinated?

  56. “Rodgers has said he was “immunized” for covid. That sounds like he’s had it previously and is counting acquired immunity from the prior infection. There’s a lot of scientific evidence that recovery from covid provides more protection against future reinfection better than vaccination does (the whole point of vaccination is to induce the creation of antibodies which a person gets when infected).”

Maybe. But it’s not an “immunization” protocol, it’s a vaccination protocol (by the way, there is no proof he’s had it before, so take his statement with a huge grain of salt). If he didn’t want to get vaccinated, that’s fine; wear the mask and follow the rules. Wentz and Cousins wear the mask. He essentially lied to his teammates and put them and their families at risk. It’s stupid and reckless, unbecoming of a leader, and even if he throws the football well I’m not sure how the team can rally around him or even trust him anymore.

  57. The man can ball, but he’s incredibly selfish and egotistical. He hurt his team with his lack of commitment. Piece of work not quite as smart as he thinks he is. Hope Shailene knows what she’s in for, couldn’t live in the same house with a head like his. The mighty Shield has been a joke forever, but it still needs to come-down hard (and I’m a stockholder). There went…everything. Oh well, been through Dan Devine’s dog and all that anyway. “Next”. Was a good 20 years, though. GJG (Go Jordan Go).

Everyone is commenting about no vaccine, no mask ,etc., why hasn’t anyone asked if he is actually sick or not ?

Considering he was placed in the Covid 19 protocol he has already tested positive or presumed sick. How sick we may never know. There seems to be an urgency to downplay this vs understanding more, how much, or why. Had being caught not happened we might never know that he violated NFL/NFLPA protocol. All that remains that we will see is any resulting penalty. Anything else will be the typical evasive Rogers answers.

  59. Brady was suspended 4 games for allegedly letting some air out of the footballs. If Rodgers comes out of this unscathed, it will speak volumes about Roger Goodell and the NFL. Rodgers put who knows how many people’s health at risk.

Everyone is commenting about no vaccine, no mask ,etc., why hasn’t anyone asked if he is actually sick or not ?

    ——-

    Because, karma.

  61. I’m not a Packers/Rodgers fan or hater, but I keep thinking about their thought process. Reportedly Rodgers asked the NFL for a vaccination exemption because of some alternative something or other. (I sure hope it wasn’t ivermectin.) Once that was denied, then wouldn’t just about everybody in Packers management and on the team know he wasn’t vaccinated? What did he/they think would happen? Somehow, magically, he could go out in the world (including a huge Halloween party) as if he were vaccinated and never catch COVID? Did they even consider what would happen if he did catch COVID? Was the fix in with Jeff Pash? How can the NFL ignore this situation when other teams (Saints and Raiders) were penalized for violating the protocols? My cynicism about the NFL has reached the point that I wouldn’t be surprised if they drop their protocols entirely, just to avoid dealing with Rodgers. It’s pathetic.

  62. All these people that want him to be suspended have to realize that Kirk Cousins, Harrison Smith, Dalvin Cook, Dalvin Tomlinson, Carson Wentz, and Cole Beasley have all had indoor press conferences MASKLESS, and those are just people that we know are not vaccinated. How many more have done this without us even knowing? Matt Nagy was out for 10 days for contracting COVID so should we take that as if he was unvaccinated? If the NFL knew Rodgers was unvaccinated then he along with the others have been fined for not wearing a mask during their press conferences. This is not just a Rodgers thing its a league issue.

Brady was suspended for not cooperating with the investigation.

  64. Interesting how the Packers organization is so scared of further alienating Rodgers that they let him get away with violating NFL rules so he could continue to mislead the public that he was vaccinated. Both the Packers organization and Rodgers are a bunch of snivelling cowards.

  66. Would be nice to see Arizona undefeated like they should be…
    ==========

Would be nice… if they had shown up last week.

  67. Someone explain to me how Rodgers should not have been on COVID protocol when Green Bay faced the Cardinals, when Adams was positive and their DC was positive and their #2 WR was put on protocol because he wasn’t vaxxed. You know Rodgers had contact with his #1 WR.

By not giving up his phone, email, texts and pictures to the league. A league that conveniently leaks whatever suits their narrative.

Tom Brady was right to hold his personal data. The League threw Cam under the bus for going to a medical facility, and they were protecting Rodgers this whole time.

  69. The Packers knew Rodgers was and lied and violated COVID protocols as well. Fines and taking away draft picks would be appropriate.

  70. The Packers knew Rodgers was not vaccinated and lied and violated COVID protocols as well. Fines and taking away draft picks would be appropriate.

  71. He needs to have attempted murder charges filed against him for knowingly going maskless when he was not vaxed. The nerve of this clown.

  72. Those of you talking about Rodgers personal life would probably be better off spending that time doing some soul searching of your own.

  73. Andd just like that, nobody cares about WFT emails anymore

    ===================

The NFL never has to do anything … there will always be another controversy that put the last one to bed … people have short memories

  74. I am Packers fan and shareholder Jordan Love is my QB as far as that liar goes i pray that he goes i have zero respect for him.

  75. The man in charge of this clown show is President Mark Murphy he needs to resign for running such a sloppy loose organization the many rules broken can not be forgiven nor swept under the rug do the right thing and resign .

  76. Because of Rodger’s selfishness and lies, the Packers will likely lose agaisnt the Chiefs and likely the next two games.

  77. Rodgers blatantly violated the league’s COVID policy and endangered hundreds/thousands of innocents as did the Green Bay Packer Org who were probably trying to placate the diva by not making waves. Rodgers needs to be fined heavily and suspended. The Green Bay Packers need to be fined heavily and lose draft picks. I’m sick and tired of certain teams and players treated like they’re above the law. And I don’t care how much freakin money A-Rod makes for the league. If any of us had any heart and soul we would boycott anything Packers and Aaron Rodgers.

  78. Did he also violate policy when he made those commercials with Jake from State Farm and Patrick Mahomes?

  79. If other players and teams are going to be punished and fined for violating protocols, Mr. Rogers should not be an exception. I hope all the other players who have been sanctioned raise such a stink that the nfl has no choice but to enforce their own rules.
