Mac Jones: I got hit hard, thought Brian Burns had the ball

USA TODAY Sports

Patriots quarterback Mac Jones offered his first comments on a play in Sunday’s game that Panthers linebacker Haason Reddick called “completely dirty.

After Jones was stripped of the ball on a sack by Panthers defensive end Brian Burns, he grabbed Burns’ ankle and held it as Burns tried to pursue the ball. Jones rolled over as Burns tried to shake loose and the defensive player was twisted down to the ground while the play wrapped up far away from the two men. Burns left the game briefly and eventually left for good with an ankle injury in the fourth quarter.

During an appearance on WEEI, Jones said that he thought Burns had the ball and he was trying to make a tackle.

“After I got hit pretty hard, I didn’t really know exactly what was going on. I thought he had the ball and it was my job to try and make the tackle. That was pretty much it,” Jones said, via Michael Hurley of WBZ. “And you know, obviously when you get up and you see the ball is actually down the field a little bit more . . . it was just a bang-bang play and I didn’t mean to hurt anybody or anything like that. I was just trying to tackle him and make the play. Because you know, I didn’t really know what was going on.”

No penalty was called on the play, but Jones can be fined by the league if they feel his conduct is worthy of discipline.

  1. No penalty or fine needed. Just a football play in which a tackle was being attempted. Its football.

  2. You don’t get to hear many stories from defenders about how the meanie QB hurt me.

  3. ** Looked at it a few more times and it appears it was a TE, not the LT, that tried to block Burns before going out on a route. Still, the rest holds true.

  4. Nothing to see here except Hasson still acting sore about getting ejected & fined $9K his rookie year. Move along.

  5. Could be a flag for tripping I guess but I’ve seen a lot worse not get called.

If Mac Jones gets fined for that then this league is even more charmin soft than I thought it was. If that is even possible.

  6. Why are Patriot fans so quick to give this guy a pass ???

Have you seen the NFL films version of the replay ??? I guarantee you that he hasn’t, nor have the people defending him.

    It was Dirty.

    No real defense of it.

  7. Mac also seemed to use his own leg to knock or roll Burns to the ground.

Not a good look. Doesn’t kicking a player call for a penalty flag?

  8. I’d love to see someone try to take a cheap shot at Mac and what the team does to him afterward.

Remember the playoff game when a rookie Von Miller took a cheap shot on a Patriots player and Miller then got his ass beaten up on the Patriots sidelines. That’s nothing compared to what would happen if someone is dumb enough to take a run at Mac Jones.
