Pete Carroll on whether Seahawks will claim OBJ on waivers: “You’ll see”

Odell Beckham Jr. would like to play for the Seahawks, we’re told. On Monday, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll wouldn’t tell whether his team wants Beckham.

“You’ll see,” Carroll said with a smile on Monday as to whether Seattle will make a waivers claim for Beckham, via Michael-Shawn Dugar of The Athletic.com.

“We’re aware of what’s going on and we’ve been involved to understand it and compete,” Carroll added, “to know what’s happening. We’ll let you know as soon as it happens. I got to wait. So, I didn’t say yes or I didn’t say no. That’s because . . . you’ll see.”

The Seahawks have the cap space to absorb Beckham’s $7.25 million salary for the balance of the season. Roughly a third of the league can absorb the deal without moving money around.

  1. That would be perfect because the only thing this Browns fan wants to see is OBJ missing the playoffs, wherever he lands. This fits the bill.

  2. What a great fit!!!! NOT.

Seattle should worry about their defense instead of adding another receiver.

  3. @larryuberstein – OBJ still gets what he wants though. If going to Seattle he ends up in an offense that lacks that 3rd wr as they’ve tried playing Hart and Eskridge to little success. With Wilson coming back qb he would get the chance to show his worth before free agency even if it means less targets and less likely to make the playoffs.

  4. If the contract ends at the end of the season, why not give him a try out? If he starts to go south, cut him and they aren’t out anything…

    Go Hawks!

  5. No new projects this season. Let’s wait for the GM and coaching changes after this disappointing year.

  6. If they are only taking a part-year flyer on him then it does help Sea brass to tell Wilson they r doing everything possible to improve offense. On the field it would help, but unless defense improves fairly dramatically it may not matter. Partial year is probably not enough time for OBJ to whine about no touches and stop trying so it may be ok on that front. But I wouldn’t want him beyond that, not worth the trouble imo.

  7. Oh no. I don’t want to see Metcalf catching the WR Diva virus!!! Keep OBJ OFF the team.

  8. Can he play Corner, or O-Line? Otherwise, we don’t want him! We don’t need a nutjob headcase WR. Hard Pass!

My understanding is that if you claim a player off waivers, you become responsible for the contract. So even if you let him go after a game or two, you’re still on the hook for the rest of the salary… unless somebody else then picks him up on waivers and assumes the hot potato.

But the Browns reworked his deal before they released him. Also, not everything in an NFL contract is guaranteed.

  11. He will clear waivers. No team would be stupid enough to pick up that contract especially after his comments today saying he would be “trouble” if the wrong team picked him up.
The upside (potential upside) for the hawks is they don’t have to give up a draft pick to give this guy a good try out.
Having said that, the hawks are not one player away from being a playoff team. They simply aren’t… they have several of the 22 positions that need significant upgrade which is going to take 1-2 years. And to anyone who thinks it’s not that dire, if you could replace 3 starters today, how would they do in the NFC West as it is now?

  12. Sorry to bust your bubble, but Metcalf already has the diva virus and hasn’t proven anything yet in the league.

  13. Even if he goes there, will his ego let him be the clear WR #2 to DK Metcalf? That would be fun to watch.

  14. Those who comment about needing defense haven’t been watching the last 3 games, which have been a big improvement. We only lost the 2 games against the Steelers and Saints with Geno by 3 points each and held the Saints, with Winston still in, to 13 points. Pass rush has improved and the CB’s are working out well with Reed and Tre Brown now. Would have won the Saints game in regular time if not for the 2 field goal misses. Beat the Jaguars 31 to 7 and they just beat the Bills, holding them to 6 points. They scored 19 points against the Titans and the Cardinals also.

  15. OBJ just gives Wilson another weapon. With 3 potential big play makers to watch out for it gives more options and spreads the defense thin in trying to cover all 3. Sounds like a potential opportunity and OBJ wants to play on the Seahawks anyway. He has something to prove and wants an accurate quarterback so he has a chance to show, especially on a long ball of which Russ is the best.

  16. His reworked deal expires after this season. The two additional years were voided. If he gets claimed on waivers, the new team owes him $7.5M guaranteed…$4.5M in the form of a roster bonus if he is on a roster tomorrow and $3M guaranteed for the rest of the year. If he is not claimed, the Browns pay that $4.5M in a one time payout tomorrow and he is a free agent. This means that a team that claims his rights on waivers has to have $7.5M in cap space today. They would be better off waiting until tomorrow and sign him for less than $7.5M and letting the Browns eat half the cost.

  17. Something that hasn’t been widely understood in this is how smart, team friendly, and player friendly this contract rework is. It lowers the Browns actual cash payout and cap hit. It prevents an unwanted team from owning Beckham’s rights for 2.5 years. It lowers the likelihood that he will be claimed on waivers and if so, completely absolves the Browns of all liability. Lawyers would be broke if all divorces were this easy and amicable.

Clear No. 2? Not only would DK. Metcalf be No.1, Tyler Lockett would be the clear No. 2. At this point in their careers Lockett is the much better player, and has more history and chemistry with Russell Wilson.

  19. “If going to Seattle he ends up in an offense that lacks that 3rd wr”
    __________

Logically this makes sense but Odell isn’t exactly a logical guy. He’s just coming off this same sort of situation in Cleveland where he wasn’t pressured to be the #1 guy and any contribution would be seen as great and it failed miserably. How long is he going to be happy as the third wideout especially with an over-achiever like Lockett above him who gives 110% every play? Lockett puts in more effort per series than Odell does per game.
