Chiefs emerge as perceived Odell Beckham Jr. favorite

As one point on Wednesday afternoon, the general vibes pointed to the Saints as the team that would land receiver Odell Beckham Jr. Late Wednesday afternoon, that changed.

The prevailing chatter is pointing to the Chiefs as the place where Beckham will land.

It’s not done until he signs, obviously. And since we first caught wind of the Chiefs as the leaders for Beckham’s services, NFL Media reported that he may take a few days to make a final decision.

In Kansas City, Beckham would be second fiddle at best behind Tyreek Hill, third if Travis Kelce is counted in that mix. But with Patrick Mahomes as the quarterback, Beckham could get both favorable matchups and plenty of targets.

Beckham eventually has to make a decision based on the factors that are important to him. From number of touches to the amount of money to the quality of quarterback to an opportunity to chase a title to the ability to lay the foundation for a free-agency payday in March, only Beckham can decide how to prioritize the factors and make a decision.

Again, it’s not done until it’s done. And if/when the notion that the Chiefs are the favorite takes root, maybe someone else will make a more serious run at securing his services.

The teams currently to watch include the Chiefs, Patriots. Saints, Seahawks, and Packers. The longer this takes, the less likely he’ll be playing for his new team on Sunday.

The Chiefs face the Raiders on Sunday night, the Seahawks and Packers play in Green Bay, the Saints visit the Titans, and the Patriots host, yes, the Browns.

  1. OBJ … this is way worse than those guys who sit in the green room for hours on draft night. You thought you were going to be welcomed somewhere with open arms. Story is out on you kid. Last chance.

  2. In other words Mecole Hardman is now truly a bust. I remember when he was drafted Chiefs fans were ecstatic and thought they had another Tyreek Hill.

  3. As a Chiefs fan, how? Salary cap hell. Just signed Flash Gordon. He would be at best WR2, not to mention Kelce. You can’t take kelce out, he is a beast! Would OBJ be a decoy? I can’t see that at 7.5 mil. or whatever they would owe him. I think big mistake plus his diva status. But whatever, I don’t sign the checks.

  4. Doesn’t make sense in terms of offensive concepts. Ravens is the team that seems to be most appropriate for Beckham’s skillset.

  5. Somebody please sign him FAST so he can fade back into the abyss of mediocrity and we don’t have to see and hear his name anymore.

  6. You think after clearing waivers that he’s gonna sign with a bottom feeder? Think again, the worst team he’ll sign with is the Saints. Just look for Seattle, KC, GB.

  7. Does this guy really want to play? I’m beginning to question it. Taking his time getting on his new team…the Chiefs? Does he really want to be the 3rd or 4th option on a team with no offensive line? He’ll be more frustrated there than he was in Cleveland. Should have gone to Detroit as a clear no.1.

  8. Everyone knows he wants to play for a winner so why the hesitation, Green Bay has offered you a chance to so you better sign their offer before we pull it off the table & you’ll be left with pretenders.

  9. I thought he wanted to go to a playoff contender? The Chiefs are a sinking ship. Go to Green Bay and take over as the #1 WR there.

  10. Is it me or do the CHEFS play with more monopoly money than others? I swear they are in on everyone….all the time.

  11. Chiefs going nowhere. Odell Beckham a cancer. Who cares. What has he ever won? Career highlights is Alec ogeltree tacking him into the stands in at. Louis

  12. Or maybe no one will need his services. The media talks about OBJ as if he had back to back 1200 yard 10 TD seasons. After that one hand grab which was eons ago he hasn’t done squat to receive so much attention. He is over the hill and full of himself that no contender will have a need for

  13. Perfect Fit… Now Odell’s dad and Mahomes’ mom can break down game film together and tweet about it….

  14. OBJ would be the last nail in the coffin for the Chiefs. Teams play better when he is off the team, Never take a player that cares more about his persona than his performance!

  15. Is he taking his time mulling his options or is there not as big a demand for big ego WR’s coming off ACL surgery as he thought?

  16. It’s apparent Josh Gordon isn’t working, don’t see them trying again with Odell with his injury history unless it’s for vet minimum, a prove it half season contract. Won’t be upset either way if he goes with the chiefs or not. He comes with issues I’d rather avoid.

Post of the morning! Love it.

  18. Chiefs would be a good fit. If he can’t do better with Mahomes then he is really washed up.

  19. This guy has always been an “entertainer”. He knew what he had to do coming into the game to create hype and attention. With any sport a player can make themselves more popular by doing things such as 1 handed catches in practice and warm ups. By being front and center in all the media discussions and being the one thing everyone talks about. He is promoting himself with all this and the lack of football plays is now hurting that brand which in the end hurt his bank account. There has always been dozens of WR better then him, he just promoted himself so much to trick everyone into thinking he was something special when in fact he never really has been. He is fast and makes a few one handed grabs with gloves on so sticky anyone could do it.

  20. Amazing how the bad boys continue to get stroked in the NFL. selfishness on two team that let him go and he continues with the I will only play for…sounds like what happen in baseball and NBA

His first 3 seasons in the NFL he averaged over 1300 yard per season and had 35 TDs. 3 Pro Bowls. That IS pretty impressive, he didn’t need to trick anyone. He had fallen off but you act like this guy has NEVER been any good. And if the gloves make it so “anyone can do it”, why isn’t everyone doing it? I don’t like the guy, but to say he was never anything “special” is silly.

  22. I’m not really concerned about which team is OBJ’s “Favorite.” I’m more concerned with which team is dumb enough, or desperate enough, or both, to pick him up?

  23. This makes sense and glad it’s not my team.
Chiefs don’t have to pay him either kids, the Browns are paying him around 4.3 million this season yet, no matter where he signs. Between MaHomes, Hill, and Kelce, OBJ won’t say squat and this makes the Chiefs much better if he shuts up and plays.

  24. If he wants targets, NE is where he needs to go. He’s essentially a third receiver at best on all those team due to the receiving weapons at WR and TE that they all have, besides the Patriots. OBJ also clearly wants to get paid again, and he’s going to need to stay relevant in order to do that. Pats also love getting those WRs on one year deals. AB, Moss, Gordon, etc.

  25. As a Broncos fan, I welcome this. He will be awful for that locker room. The sooner the Chiefs fall back into the world of mediocrity that they were in for 50 years, the better.

Not just post of the morning…all time classic!

  27. I dont think that band-aid will help. Good Luck to the Chiefs but they stink. They should be investing money in their D

  28. Everyone now sounds like OBJ is this definite bust. Just cause he can’t give you Giants numbers anymore and can’t get 100 yards a game what if he can give you 45 yards as a second option receiver. What team wouldn’t take him for that low a salary even if only to take the pressure off the number one receiver in the team. Word is he worked hard at practice. Just had no connection with overrated first overall pick Baker Mayfield which is just another game mangar Kirk Cousins 2.0 if that.

  29. On paper it looks fine but Odell craves attention and in KC it’s all about Mahomes all the time with Hill and Kelce getting all the love on the receiver side of things and that’s not going to change. Where are Odell’s accolades going to come from and how long before he resents not getting any? That was his entire problem in Cleveland that he was basically ignored when he was out hurt and/or not producing and that will absolutely be the same reaction in KC.

  30. I guess the Eagles are not in the mix for Beckham. Understandable that Beckham wouldn’t choose the Eagles anyway since they don’t have a quarterback that would target him much or if he did, be accurate with his throws.

  31. Rodgers & Beckham together….let that sink in for a moment…hahaha… that would be great TV!

  32. No way the Patriots sign him. They’ve got great chemistry developing with Mac and the receiving corps/tight ends. No need to disrupt it with a selfish malcontent.

  33. Makes no sense. How much would he cost the chiefs? What makes them think Odell is going to fix their offense? Why would you spend more money on a receiver when your defense is horrendous? The offense looks out of sync and Odell is going to come in an sync everyone up?

    This is gonna end bad.

  34. Read a report that the Packers offered him the vet minimum amount. The reason, anything he gets is deducted from the 4.3 mil Cleveland owes him. Thus, there is no reason any team would pay more because he gets nothing more. so its not money because no one will offer him a contract for 8 games.
I’m sure he thinks KC is in the running and possibly more flashy then green bay, if not he would have take the deal they offered so they are out.

  35. now its KC.. lets see for this washed up Diva in the next hour who the next team is and so on every hour..

The Chiefs offensive line is ranked #2 overall in the NFL by PFF. If you don’t ascribe to PFF’s rankings (and I don’t, because it’s “Opinion Based Grading”), there are other metrics that say their offensive line is at least Top 7, if not Top 3.

But it’s completely meaningless because Andy doesn’t run the ball enough and Mahomes has a case of the Yips. About the only exciting aspect of OBJ joining the Chiefs is that they’ll be the first NFL team to have two players with the initials OBJ.
