Mike White: If you ask me, I should have been a first overall pick

It took Jets quarterback Mike White a long time to be an overnight success. He transferred from South Florida to Western Kentucky, was a fifth-round pick of the Cowboys in 2018, and never got on the field in a regular-season game until 2021, when he came in for an injured Zach Wilson and had a huge game in his first start.

As White prepares to start again on Sunday for the Jets against the Bills, he says he doesn’t know why NFL teams didn’t believe in him as a starting quarterback, but he always believed in himself.

“I couldn’t tell you. That’s definitely the scouting departments across the league and what their interpretation of me is,” White said. “I have 100 percent confidence in myself. So if you ask me, I should have been a first overall pick. But that’s neither here nor there. That’s four years ago. I try to get my mind off that and be in the here and now and execute what my job is right now.”

White has looked a lot better this season than Wilson, the second overall pick in this year’s draft. Whether White can keep it up remains to be seen, but so far he’s playing like a player who has every right to ooze self confidence.

  1. To be fair, regardless of the draft, he was behind Dak, Mr Never Injured Super QB (until 2020 anyways) so he was never getting on the field.

Now he just has too show his cards, if its a winning hand he beats out Zach and remains the starter, or it’s still a winning hand but Sala is all in on Wilson, White now has a highlight reel for a trade.

Or he stinks the place up and goes back to the bench.

Either way, now’s the time to play your hand…..

  2. It’s hard not to root for underdogs like this . I hope he plays his way into some money kinda like Kirk Cousins and Mike Glennon did.

  3. Typical jets….. the only way they find a success story is when the stumble across it by luck. Let’s see if they find a way to ruin White’s career too

  4. He had a good game, but that stuff happens to lots of guys we never hear from again. But if he beats the Bills I will pay more attention.

  5. “ Typical jets….. the only way they find a success story is when the stumble across it by luck. Let’s see if they find a way to ruin White’s career too”

I’m not a Jets fan but isn’t that what happened with the Patriots? Bledsoe went down and Brady came in. I guess the Pats “stumbled” into him.

  6. Teams like the Saints, Panthers, Steelers and WFT should take a chance on this kid and make a trade in the off season. We know drafting a QB in the first round is a total crapshoot.

  7. Win a lot more games before you make such a stupid statement like that. There are a lot of QBs that had a big head like yours, and flamed out.

  8. He may be delusional but he came from Western Kentucky. He’s probably one of the better players they’ve ever had and he was probably also a big man on campus in high school. Guys who get to this level don’t handle losing very well and it’s usually because they have never lost much.

  9. And I should have married a supermodel….. Reality and Fantasy usually don’t get along well…

  10. It’s fine to say this and believe it, probably not smart to say it publicly in the day and age of sound clips being used to come back and bite people in the arse.

  11. If they had a re-draft, undrafted Kurt Warner would be #1 overall, and so would 6th rounder Tom Brady. I think Johnny Unitas was something like a 19th round pick, so bad scouting has always been around. I don’t think anyone has to take a test to become a scout. It’s usually based on who you know, rather than what you know.

  12. To be fair – hasn’t this guy only played like 6 quarters of NFL football?

I’m a Jets fan but can we pump the brakes a little bit?

Obviously, I’m rooting for White but let’s take it easy little bit, can we?

  13. If anyone else said this, I’d be put off.

But everyone loves a good underdog story, and this one is no exception.

  14. The best thing about Mike is that he doesn’t have to twist the ankles of fallen DE’s to win.

  15. More of the Brady Effect.

Find a slight, however large, small or imaginary, and let the world see how bitter you are.

  16. I know he’s probably busting at the seams to say this but it’s way too premature for him to make these kinds of statements. I wish him well but he needs to cut down the turnovers and keep throwing the ball well for a longer period.

  17. Mike positioning himself to be the next Tom Brady. “You all passed on me multiple times and I was picked 199th! Now it is me against the world FOREVER!”

  18. Who was the last QB who transferred from a South Florida to a Western Kentucky and was drafter higher than the 5th round? And it’s one game, people. ONE GAME. I don’t have a count of the one-game QB wonders in NFL history, but I’ll bet it’s in triple digits. Once a couple of competent defensive coordinators get a chance to look at his tape, he’ll be back on the bench. There aren’t many overlooked Kurt Warners out there. So he looks better than the overrated Zach Wilson. Is that a reason to start picking out a Manhattan bridge to rename for him?

  19. If they had a re-draft, undrafted Kurt Warner would be #1 overall
    ==========

In 1994, Warner refused to participate in passing drills in Packers mini camp, stating flat out he “wasn’t ready” according to Mariucci and Holmgren. Passing drills. Not even pre-season action.

You think that is going to get you picked #1 overall?

  20. Many backup qbs do pretty well until defenses adjust to him. Enjoy the short honeymoon Mr “I should have been drafted #1 overall”.

  21. Whatever you say… Ladies and Gentlemen: this year’s Gardner Minshew. You are a Flash-In-The-Pan.

  22. He wasn’t #1 for a reason. So he can enjoy the feeling right up to where defenses figure him out. That will tell the Jets, and everyone else, if he’s a diamond in the rough.

  23. Woah woah woah…let’s not go crazy, Mike. You look good out there. But if what you’re claiming is really true, then why not keep your mouth shut, let your play do the talking, and maybe…just maybe…once you’ve called it a career, everyone will agree with you.

  24. Take a look at ‘You like that?’ Kirk Cousins. It’s good to be confident, but save the bragging for until after you’ve achieved something. If not, there’s a good chance you’ll fall flat on your face, and fast.

  25. White’s comment is half reasonable and half silly. Reasonable, in that he has a terrific throwing arm and thus the physical ability to be a Matthew Stafford. But it’s sad to White lack self-awareness of his former (and current?) flaws. Cowboy fans got a close look at him when he entered the league, and some who did not believe in Dak Prescott talked up White as someone who could eventually challenge for the job on the basis of better pure throwing. But White was *badly* exposed in preseason games, looking totally lost in the pocket and clueless at making NFL reads and progressions. If he’s made big strides in that area, that’s great, and I applaud him for his hard work. But he should know that he was nothing like a first overall pick when he started.

  26. If it beats the Bills, then I would give him credence. He beat a Bengals team that had 40 scored on it by the Browns.

Hope he beats the over rated Bills.

How are NFL teams rated? Aside from their record I mean

  28. All he did was throw to open guys and screen passes in his big game, pump the brakes just a bit.

  29. There’s more to what he said that wasn’t put in the article… he said something about how every qb in the league should feel that way. so its not ego. it’s just the fact if you are starting in the nfl, you should be confident in your abilities, be prepared and ready to go, and feel you’re the best option for the team

  30. I remember watching him throw at the 2018 Combine. No idea how many threw, but he was fourth best behind Josh Allen (duh), Josh Rosen and Baker Mayfield. Obvious NFL arm.

Dude has 1 good game and now he is a future HOF’er.… wow
    ———————————-

He was robbed that they didn’t vote him in during halftime.

    ********

As a Jets fan (and I can’t believe I am doing this) one of the rumors that floated around the NY Sports Media when BB went to the Pats is that he WANTED the Jets to take Brady. When they didn’t and Parcel’s went heavy into the the D (and remember Brady was a 6TH ROUND pick) BB didn’t want the job without the QB he wanted so went where that QB landed.

If any of that is true, while we knocked Drew out of football and gave Brady his shot I think Brady was already in the QB spot in ink as soon as Drew was expendable.

So in effect Jets fans, the Jets (thru Parcel) created our own 20 year nightmare.

  33. Teams now have tape on him. Let’s see if he still can perform as he has in six quarters.
