Matthew Stafford, OBJ have a first-drive miscommunication, ending in an INT

USA TODAY Sports

It was going well for the Rams in their first drive with Odell Beckham Jr. on the team. Until it wasn’t.

A deep throw by quarterback Matthew Stafford intended for Beckham resulted in an interception inside the 10 by 49ers defensive back Jimmie Ward. Beckham appeared to stop running while the ball was in the air.

Stafford and Beckham connected for a gain of five yards on the first play of the ill-fated drive.

The duo has had limited opportunity to work together. Their first official effort didn’t go well. We’ll see how it goes the rest of the night.

  1. Subtraction by addition. That’s on McVey he should not have tried to work the Beckham thing out at warp speed. The Rams are fighting it out for No. 1 seed. Makes no sense.

  2. Nah that is Stafford being Stafford. People act like he was not part of the lions problem. He is a turnover machine

OBJ couldn’t run a good route if his life depended on it.

The OBJ squid game… run a good route.

  4. First wheel has flown off the tracks…the train wreck is soon to follow…McVay & Snead can ride in the caboose…

  5. Since everyone is blaming OBJ for this play that was clearly Stafford’s fault, blame him for the fake field goal and the defense that can’t stop the run too. Oh and how did Cleveland look without Odell yesterday. But but but Baker is better without Odell.

  6. Funny how we call a WR adlibbing designed routes a “miscommunication”. Last year, Baker Mayfield through 11 TDs and 1 interception in the last 10 games without OBJ on the field. It’s very clear what the issue is. If you still think OBJ is an elite WR, you must be watching a different sport.

  7. If the Rams head coach was truly a genius like the talking heads like to spout ,shiny new toys should be an afterthought !

I thought I was the only one who noticed that. Everyone all high on Stat Padford.

  9. Rams aint tough enough and Strafford will end up being who he is. Rebuild next year, and the year after and the year after that

  10. Is it me or do the Rams players faces look like why did we have to sign these two guys we where ok just the way we where !

  11. Too bad they’ve traded away their meaningful draft picks for the next 3 years.

  12. Seems i seen this movie before…..after one game with OBJ everyone is going to bench Statfford on their fantasy teams.

  13. Signs of things to come for the Rams? Stacking the roster doesn’t always buy you a Super Bowl.

  14. What is the purpose of GAME TAPE, SCOUTS, and the supposed Talent evaluaters on your staff ,BEFORE YOU make a trade of this magnitude? Every Fan knows what OBJ is ….and none of it is good anymore. SMH

  15. Stafford will choke in the big lights. Always has and to think he was compared to the Great Cool Joe Flacco… Rams will implode.

  16. The worst thing to ever happen to OBJ was that catch. Dude had one good year and one amazing catch and he’s supposed to be Jerry Rice 2.0 when in fact he’s no better than a washed up Terrell Owens. I’m glad Owens’ dad didn’t have Twitter.

  17. That’s an insult to Terrell Owens. Say what you want about driveway situps…dude always came to play.

  18. Unfortunately for the Rams, Stafford is used to nights like this. No way this team is Super bowl bound, the defense showed nothing last night other then you have one star expecting another to make a play and they all fail to do so.
A pass rush only works when the other team passes. They ran ran ran a lot.

  19. Gee OBJ gave up on a route when he didn’t think he was the target. Who thought that would happen?

Here is the problem with people like OBJ it is about “ME”.

The problem the Rams face now is they cut Jackson and Brown is hurt. By default that means they have to find a way to get OBJ productive. The only way he will be productive is if he thinks every pass is going to him (and he should be running every play like IT IS regardless) or he’ll turn petulant on them. And if they try to force the ball to him at the expense of say Kupp, they can kiss their SB hopes goodbye.

HELLO NFL when 2 teams as bad as the Browns (especially after what they gave up for OBJ) and the Giants give up on a “star” player you really need to read the warning label.

  20. 1 game into the OBJ project and Stafford is forcing the ball to him, not a good sign of things to come

  21. Why did McVay even play Beckham last night? He needs time to acclimate to his new team mates, the playbook, and make a start on building chemistry with Matt Stafford, if there is any. The pick where he stopped running his route seemed to set the tone for the rest of the Ram’s night. You finish your route, whether you’re targeted or not. Have to credit the 49ers great game plan also. They definitely have the Ram’s number, with or without Beckham.
