Deebo Samuel amassed 133 yards from scrimmage with a pair of touchdowns — one rushing and one receiving — as the San Francisco 49ers throttled the Los Angeles Rams 31-10 on Monday night.

The 49ers dominated all aspects of the game against the Rams in earning a fifth straight victory in the series between the two teams. Los Angeles hasn’t won a game between the two teams since a 48-32 win in the final week of the 2018 season.

The Rams have now authored two straight duds after last week’s 28-16 loss to the Tennessee Titans where they were outplayed across the board as well.

Matthew Stafford was intercepted on each of the Rams’ first two possessions. A deep pass intended for new addition Odell Beckham Jr. was picked off by safety Jimmie Ward. The 49ers then marched on a seemingly endless 18-play drive that covered 93 yards before Jimmy Garoppolo found George Kittle on an 8-yard touchdown to take an early 7-0 lead.

Ward struck again for the 49ers as he picked off Stafford for a second time on a pass intended for Tyler Higbee and returned it for a 27-yard touchdown and a 14-0 lead.

Los Angles got on the board as Stafford and Higbee connected on a 10-yard touchdown to cut the lead to 14-7. But the 49ers answered again with another lengthy scoring drive. Samuel’s 8-yard touchdown run capped an 11-play, 91-yard drive for San Francisco as they grabbed a 21-7 lead with 5:24 left in the first half.

The Rams put themselves in position to score before the end of the half. However, Sean McVay decided on a fake field goal try that resulted in punter Johnny Hekker completing a pass to Kendall Blanton well short of the sticks for a turnover on downs.

The Rams went three-and-out on each of their three possessions in the third quarter while Robbie Gould added a 50-yards field goal for San Francisco to push the lead to 24-7. With the clock running short, the Rams tried to convert a fourth-and-goal from the 49ers’ 11-yard line with just over six minutes left to play only for Stafford to throw incomplete to Van Jefferson for another turnover on downs.

Samuel then slashed his way through the Rams defense on a 40-yard catch-and-run on a pass from Garoppolo that iced the game away for the 49ers with a 31-7 advantage.

The Rams would again drive inside the 49ers’ 10-yard line and leave without a touchdown. A sack of Stafford from Nick Bosa forced a 37-yard field goal from Matt Gay as the Rams futilely cut the lead to 31-10.

Stafford completed 26 of 41 passes for 243 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions for the Rams. Cooper Kupp carried the load for the Rams with 11 catches for 122 yards. Beckham caught just two passes for 18 yards in his first action with the team since signing late in the week after his release from the Cleveland Browns.

Garoppolo was 15 of 19 for 182 yards and two touchdowns for the 49ers. Elijah Mitchell rushed for 91 yards on 27 attempts as well for San Francisco.

  1. Going to be a very tough day for the football media types tomorrow. Can’t slobber over how great the Rams are now. What next?

  2. Where has this 49ers been all season?

Another bad performance by Stafford in big game after last week, Seahawks and Cards game. Lamar has one bad game and is said blueprint on him.
Stafford has been terrible in more games.

  3. Stafford could have thrown like 6 interceptions in that game. Well, maybe the loaded Rams can get him his first playoff victory. Watch out, Stafford, run-to-a-stacked-team TB12 will be eyeing the Rams.

  4. And this was supposed to be the toughest division in football, the only good team in the division is the Cardinals?

  5. I gotta say, everyone looks beatable to me. Bucs got beat up by Washington, Chiefs seem inconsistent, Bills lost to Jacksonville. Packers are still lost without Rodgers, he’s back so we’ll see. Still a couple months left.

  6. They lost this game with their starters in. They may come back and win a big game or two, but it’s evident there are some deeper issues. VM didn’t want to leave Denver.
I think it’s starting to get clearer who will take the NFC West.

  7. Where’s vaunted Rams D? No contest, no OBJ, NO VON… Stamford under throwing. Rams we’re out schemed by Shanahan AGAIN!

  8. This was pretty much the same game as Bucs vs WFT. Two early interceptions changed the game. McVay needs to get this offense back on track. 10 points is shameful with how many weapons they have. Rams defense seems to be stumbling as well.

  9. Rams are a soft team. Hit them in the mouth and they can’t hit back.

I’m not sure McVay has learned anything since his SB loss. Plan A doesn’t work and that’s it. He doesn’t have a Plan B.

  10. What team just suited up in the Red & Gold? I’m laughing at how unexpected this was.

Whether or not this was the game plan doesn’t matter. The Niner brain trust KNOW they have the roster to compete with the true contenders in the League. Temper all expectations and take this momentum into next week. Earn what you win

    GO NINERS!!!!!

  11. But but…They have Von Miller and OBJ now!

Locked to win the SB in their own stadium I thought? Oh well.

  12. Great win . Game balls for both Jimmie and Deebo.. In addition, we are going to win the NFC West!

The compete with true contenders like the Cardinals?

  14. I find it interesting that the media actually LIKES a super team built of trade bait and free agent stars. I mean, if the Rams don’t win it all, they are a bust. There’s no in-between. They are swinging for the fences. They have to beat either the Packers or the Bucks or the Cowboys or Cardinals or some combination to do it. I’d put them at about the 5th seed right now.

  15. Add Von Miller and the defense gets worse. Add OBJ and the offense gets worse. Add both, and lose to the last-place team in the division by 3 touchdowns.

Their best hope right now is that every team in the league seems to be a bit of a mess. Which is everyone else’s best hope, too.

  16. Rams spent too much in trades and free agency instead of investing in their own talents. It will cost them the next 5 years. Jimmy G looked like he turned the clock back 2 years due to how non existent the Rams pass rush has become as opposed to early in the season. Stafford is back to his real self.

  17. Awful gambles with trying to buy the Super Bowl through free agency. Truth be told, Stafford is just like Palmer. No playoff win until 10+ years later, then it all ends because both crumble under pressure. It’s the Lion mentality of Statford.

Yeah, the same ones who just got stomped by a P.J Walker/Cam Newton lead Panthers.

  19. Lots of dropped balls by the receivers but you win as a team, you lose as a team. Packers right now hold the top spot in the NFC, can they hold on? AFC is open. Final stretch should be interesting.

  20. I’ve been hesitant to say it as a guy who watched Stafford at Highland Park in Dallas but this guy always failed on the big stage in Detroit, even for a team that had rarely had a big stage.
He’s either 0-2 or 0-3 in the playoffs. Anytime LA has had a big game this year he has choked. He always choked in the Thanksgiving games. He’s in LA facing teams like the Bucs, Cowboys, and Packers in the playoffs this year and you think he’s going to deliver? Highly doubtful

  21. When Jimmy G. has Samuel and Kittle healthy, the 49ers are dangerous. They did a great job of playing keep away from the Rams. They have a lot of issues to address during the bye week. The drops, the miscommunications…we’ll see if they can turn the page on the last 2 games and get it all fixed. Should be interesting…

  22. Funny how QBs keep throwing for 200 or less and coming out with wins. It’s like teams are reverting back to the late 80s and 90s and playing smashmouth again. It looks sweet putting up 400 yards, but some other puts up 182 and outplays you, it’s like 30 years ago.

  23. The offense was terrible, but that D is terrible. Raheem Morris was the worst hire of the off season. Other Defenses around the league have gotten better over time, but the Rams seem to get worse every week. The O needs time to gel after losing Woods, OBJ was supposed to be a luxury but now he’s a necessity. They’re still going to the playoffs. 11-6 or 10-7 will get them in. They might even win a game, but this team was built to go to the Super Bowl and they just won’t.

  24. Rams have went in full bore this year to win it all. They have big dollar free agents with a number of starters obtained for future draft picks. They haven’t had a 1st round pick in 5 years and don’t have one in 2022 or 2023. It will be fascinating to watch and see if it pans out .. win it all or basically suck for the next 5 years.

  25. Beat down those Los Angeles Fromt-Runners. So that’s how you beat these super teams that are full of players who are scared of the grind. You turn the game into a physical brawl and grind it out against them and make them run from the grind and fold, excellent coaching job.

  26. Deebo Samuel….whatever. Rams are a joke.
Trade away all your picks for the now and then play like crap.

  27. If the Rams don’t win it this year which they won’t you might as get rid of the mad scientist McVay. You can’t coach this way bringing in all superstars. You need to build through the draft Shawn. It takes more knowledge than you have.

  28. Vince Young’s Dream team version 2.0. It looks like the Rams went cheap on linebackers hence they cannot stop the run and even cheaper on the O-line hence they cannot block at all rendering pick-ups like Von and OBJ usual since there is no need to rush the passer and Stafford has no-time to execute a passing game all adds up to a struggle to even make the playoffs.

  29. Probably more Rams players a bit more banged up then the injury report shows. Plus the loss of key starters. Rams need to find there chemistry with recent players added or promoted. The whole team failed the last two weeks.

  30. Last night at Levi’s I looked up and saw the pass to run ratio in the 3rd quarter. The Rams had 130 yards passing and around 38 yards rushing. Niners had about 105 yards passing and 100 yards rushing. Balanced. The Rams went to the Super Bowl when they had a healthy Todd Gurley and a young Goff.

I’d be interested to see how much they used to run the ball that year. An effective running game eats up clock and keeps the ball away from elite QB’s. That was also the recipe for success in 2019 for the Niners. Problem is you can’t keep running when they bring an extra defender up toward the line, something that the Niners faced when all they had was Frank Gore. You have to have the threat of the pass to keep the extra defenders out of the box.

  31. The Niners showed the Rams that a team with good players……that actually plays as a team, can beat a group of superstars that play as individuals.

Shanahan completely out-coached McVay. In these days of parity, the coaching and schemes mean more than ever. The Rams might have more raw talent than the Niners, but the Niners had the better team….at least last night.

Before the game, the Niner players were being interviewed and they said that this was going to be an “ice-bag” game…..meaning that they were going to play old-fashioned smash-mouth football….and they sure did. Ram defenders were on the sidelines screaming at each other.

The Niners put a good old fashioned whooping on the Rams. At one point, I saw Kittle pancake Von Miller….putting Miller right on his back.

  32. In case you’re wondering why most great NFL franchises don’t build there teams with other franchise’s cast offs- I give you the Los Angeles Rams.

Yep. Those same Cardinals that rolled the 49ers twice, are tied with 2 other teams for the best record in all of football (one of which they already beat), and are leading the division (currently 3-0). Those Cardinals.
