OBJ pursuit was a unique experience for those involved

USA TODAY Sports

Last week was dominated by the question of where receiver Odell Beckham Jr. will continue his career. Some involved in the situation now reflect on the experience with a head shake and an exhale.

“Never a dull moment,” one source whose team pursued Beckham said as the dust finally settled on OBJ’s choice.

Others were less tactful. And while there certainly may be an element of source grapes at play, the circumstances suggest that it definitely was an experience. Or, as another source put it, “a cluster.”

Per that source, a couple of the teams that were in the hunt for Beckham still haven’t been informed by Beckham’s camp that they’re out of contention. Beyond that, Beckham changed his mind multiple times. He wanted to be claimed on waivers by the Seahawks. He wanted to sign with the Saints. As of Wednesday, he was telling some former Browns teammates that he would sign with the Chiefs.

Then came the bizarre 30 minutes on Thursday, when the Rams announced that Beckham had signed, before deleting it. Beckham then told NFL Network that he still hadn’t decided between the Packers and Rams. Minutes later, he picked the Rams. (There’s probably a good story to be told about how that nutty half hour unfolded.)

“He loved the recruiting aspect of it,” one source said. And that’s obvious, since he has said that the Rams showed him the “love” that he was seeking. That’s where the Rams made the difference, giving Beckham the attention and appreciation that he craved.

And, yes, the jersey number he’ll wear was an issue. Apparently, he believed that, if the Rams truly love him, they’ll show it by giving him the number that had been reserved for running back Cam Akers.

It’s fine that Beckham took full advantage of his options. and of the experience. He had never been a free agent. He had never been recruited by anyone since LSU. He had many factors to balance, and it appears that he placed great significance on how aggressively the teams that were pursuing him proved it with their words and actions.

That said, some of the teams that fruitlessly chased Beckham may be inclined not to give it another try if/when he becomes a free agent again in March. Which could make it easier for the Rams, frankly, to keep him. If that’s what the Rams decide to do.

  1. LOL, I’m am no scout, but the 2020-2021 version of OBJ leaves me totally nauseated and unimpressed.
Was it worth shamelessly kissing his backside with the rest of your team chemistry watching?

  2. the Rams showed him the “love” that he was seeking

Wait until the honeymoon is over.

  3. That’s a lot of hoopla for a guy with 17 catches for 232 yards and zero touchdowns.

  4. Let’s be honest, everyone except LA was offering a minimal contract. He went for the money, nothing else.

  5. If OBJ starts giving love instead of receiving “the love he seeks” his career might be salvageable

  6. If you’re a real football player, a number doesn’t matter. And his back and forth on this just shows how easy it is to change his mind. Which means when he doesn’t get his way, expect the tantrums to flare quickly.

  7. Good luck, Rams. lol

Brady really has set off a diva-itis all over the league.

I am thrilled my Patriots have none of it anymore and I am sure BB is too.

No way NE was seriously interested in this diva.

  8. Never allow your success in life, business, sport etc to rest on the shoulders of a narcissist.

Red flags are everywhere on this one. Good luck, Rams.

  9. I mean is any of this surprising? No wonder LeBron is such an ardent supporter. This was basically “The Decision 2.0.”

I’ll wager Odell does not live up to the hype or brain damage involved in this.

  10. Most overrated clown in the league. I can’t fathom how any gm could seriously pay this guy good money. Have Rama not watched the last 7 NFL seasons, or do they just remember that one catch?

  11. His contract is only for half a year. The real bidding will take place next March. I can’t imagine the Rams being in the bidding then. Or the Chiefs. They have no cap space. The Pack needs to sign Adams. Seattle? Wilson won’t play out his contract there. It will be a completely different landscape.

  12. Perhaps he can make another one handed catch and become relevant to the teenagers on tik-tok for a couple weeks again.

  13. This goes to show you that as an agent, you can make a lot of money.
But sometimes you have to grovel with the lowest of the low.

  14. Kind of the inside joke to all this is that while he no doubt imagined everybody was fighting over him and sitting on the edge of their chairs awaiting his decision none of these teams had anything more than mild curiosity. And it sounds like he poisoned the well for several of these teams so good chance the Rams will be his final stop before retirement.

Never before has a person made an entire career on one catch like Beckham. He was a good, not great, receiver, but was treated like Jerry Rice and a Jerry Rice clone had a baby and it became a WR. Now he’s just a guy and has been just a guy for a few years now.

  16. This is so OBJ! He once again found a way to get what he wants (short term) and in the process costs himself in the long run (actually in just a few months). I also wonder how many of this suitors this time wont be there next time, like in a few months. How long can he keep his head screwed on straight in LA before they get sick of him?

  17. As I have asked many times, besides the one catch in Dallas (that was absolutely sick) what else has he ever done? Most overhyped under performing player I have ever seen. I would absolutely hate it if he took a roster spot from a legitimate player on my team. Why teams fawn over headcases that have proven they can’t play is beyond me.

It wasn’t just one catch. His first 2-3 years were elite. But after that he tailed off and its been a while since what winds up taking place on the field is worth the risk and headache.

  19. All this for a guy that isn’t half the player he once was. Teams acting like they’re getting the 2015 version of OBJ.

    Rams overpaid.

They just care about buying another weapon for a Superbowl run. They dont really care what happens with him after this.

  21. Would be awesome to see OBJ put up 150 and 3 TDs to give the Clowns another kick in the Onions this weekend. Mayfield is a flat out disaster and horrible QB

  22. Nothing says $40 million per year QB like 11 for 21 for 73 yards 1 TD and 1 INT. That may have something to do with OBJs lack of production. Hey Cleveland, I know you couldnt wait to get rid of OBJ, did you realize you still have an awful QB?

  23. Considering the times we are living in, it’s so refreshing to see that a father and his son can work together on a common cause. Yes, sarcasm intended.

  24. Sounds like he is of the mind and spirit to make it a long fortuitous relationship with the Rams.

It will not, under any circumstances, blow up in their faces. (in terms of team cohesion)

    ==========

He had 3 good/great years to start his career.

    The hype was justified.

  26. OBJ. The gift that keeps on giving. Every time that catch is re-played, all I remember is the Giants lost that game and haven’t been relevant in the NFL in almost a decade. Don’t even count the 2016 year that ended in a shirtless boat trip. We all want to forget that.
