Jimmy Garoppolo: Offense felt pretty similar to the Super Bowl year

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told his team he wanted to see them run the ball at least 40 times against the Rams on Monday night, which was a decision he “almost regretted” because of how hard it is to pile up that many carries in one game.

Shanahan turned out to be prescient, however. The 49ers ran the ball 44 times for 156 yards in a 31-10 win over their divisional rivals, which Shanahan said was “just really cool” because it meant the team had to do well in all phases in order to get to that number.

Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo said the offensive effort was reminiscent of the one the 49ers used to propel themselves to Super Bowl LIV.

“Honestly it felt pretty similar to the Super Bowl year,” Garoppolo said, via 49ersWebzone.com. “It felt like we ran the ball 30 times every time that year. When we can do that and be successful on third down, it’s a good recipe for us.”

The 4-5 49ers have some work to do if they’re going to elicit further memories of that run, but holding onto the offensive identity they displayed on Monday night would keep that possibility alive.

  1. The ingenuity and efficiency was reminiscent of 2019. It was also good to see that we had a playmaker on each level of the defense. That was a fun game to watch. That was a schematic and physical beat down. The only thing that concerns me is the missed opportunities for turnovers. We forced 2 turnovers but it should have been about 5 turnovers. We can’t depend on J Ward to force all of the turnovers. Other players have to step up on that end. Incredible game by the 49ers though, Oh and Deebo is a beast. Yesterday’s price to re-sign Deebo is not today’s price. The price just went up.

  2. simply a matter of one team motivated because they’ve been hearing all week about how they haven’t won a home game in over a year, coming off an embarrassing performance the week before vs a team that has spent the last two weeks wondering how they are going to incorporate their new players. Frisco is still sub .500 but they’d be undefeated if they could play the Rams every week. It reminds me of when the Rams were cellar dwellers in the West but they would beat Seattle on a regular basis. Rams are 7-3 headed to the playoffs most likely, Deebo can grab his chain and pull up a seat on the couch and watch them…
