Report: Jared Goff’s oblique injury has his status for Week 11 in question

Lions coach Dan Campbell said Monday he wasn’t changing his starting quarterback, sticking with Jared Goff despite his struggles. Now comes word, though, that the Lions might have to start David Blough out of necessity in Week 11.

Goff has an oblique injury that could keep him out Sunday against the Browns, Tom Pelissero of NFL Media reports.

The coaching staff wants to see Goff in Wednesday’s practice to determine whether he can use his core muscles before deciding anything, according to Pelissero.

The Lions, of course, have a quick turnaround after Sunday, playing a Thanksgiving Day game against the Bears.

In his first season with the Lions, Goff has completed 66.1 percent of his passes for 2,109 yards with eight touchdowns and six interceptions. He’s also fumbled seven times, losing four.

  1. I’ve never been a big Goff fan — in fact even with the Rams I thought he’s the most overdrafted #1 QB in the past 10-15 years — but even I didn’t think he’d look as bad with the Lions as he has.

  2. As a Lions fan I’m looking into having a parade for this decision just looking into the paperwork required. The man is, not, good. And he’s a 360 degree known quantity so nothing to discover. Shouldn’t take another snap this season except by necessity of injury. Start the waiver wire, practice squad merry go round and turn over some of the other stones in the league and who knows might see something better.

  3. How is there not a clear cut #1 pick Quarterback coming out of this draft? Sucks bad, but I guess Justin Herbert was considered the third or fourth best just two years ago and he ended up being the best. This is where Brad Holmes has to make his money, because if you pass on Thibideaux and take a QB because we need one, when your team is in Detroit you cannot make those errors like the Rams have with Gurley and Goff now that there in LA. If we have to go through one more year of Goff, and stock up on best available with all these picks we have this year so be it, because we have just as many picks two drafts from now as a thanks for taking Goff, who we would be able to cut then at no cost.

  4. And if Brad Holmes wants to trade Hockenson and Taylor Decker for 2 more first rounders im all for it, because by the time we put this all together we will have to pay them both big time. Lions really do have a chance here to do great things using resources and money we already will have.

    This dude is terrible.

Definitely! Crybaby Campbell has GOT to go!

How on earth could he believe Goff “gives us the best chance of winning”???

  6. Does an injured oblique cause a QB to immediately drop the ball to crotch level at the slightest hint of pressure?

IMO, Sam Bradford has this title hands down. Goff is pretty bad but he at least started for a team that was in contention for a few years. Bradford, Bortles, and Jake Locker were all far worse picks.

You may find many stones with something better under them, but waive, cut, trade or retire, he is still going to cost the Lions $30 million next season alone. Good thing they converted $20 million of his salary into a signing bonus and pushed that money into future years (and that’s a joke). It helped them free up cap space this season to sign players and be the worst team in the league. Okay, the Jets are pretty close.

  9. I cant use language from my navy days to describe his play, they would censure me for eternity. Is Blough that bad? Could the Lions really have two of the worst Qb’s in football out of 32 teams?

  10. All the Meijer dad fans coming out talking about play Blough, and not liking me saying trade Decker and Hock for first round picks. Probably the same fans that wanted to keep Matt Boyd at the trade deadline and want Miggy on the team as long as possible.

  11. I honestly thought he was going to play decent in Detroit and maybe make McVay look slightly silly for shipping him out. I was proven very wrong and honestly I feel bad for Dan Campbell. I don’t know why, but I would like to see him achieve some success.

It’s a good point and I concur. The reality when we got him was there was a hook to be swallowed financially when we wanted to move on from him. I’m hoping that one year bleep will be mitigated by the lower cost of a rookie even a very highly drafted one. Or barring one worth a very top pick a journeyman who again would be much cheaper and the combined cost is just a one year bitter pill. But there’s no way around your point he’s a huge sunk cost.

  13. Campbell’s devotion to Goff is bizarre . Thinking his comment after the game that it’s not fair to judge Goff because he has defenders in his face all the time when attempting to pass is an outright lie . Throwing the o-line under the bus based on imagination not fact to protect an obviously struggling Goff is a great way to lose the locker room . Refusing to play Blough is just another example of Campbell’s unhealthy attachment to Goff . It almost seems like he refuses to play Blough out of the fear he would play better then Goff which in reality would not be that difficult . Holmes deserves his fair share of blame for agreeing to blow over $40M in cap space for Goff and others in the midst of a total rebuild . First rule of a rebuild is to increase cap space by dumping high priced veterans the complete opposite of what Holmes did by acquiring Goff and Brockers . Add in signing multiple FAs that haven’t contributed anything this season along with a middling draft class the Holmes hire isn’t looking very good right now .

  14. The Lions have to go as a Thanksgiving regular. They have been so awful for so long in most years that I don’t see how the league can see presenting them every year in a prime slot like that is a smart thing to do.

  15. Wonder if this oblique “injury” is like the Joe Flacco “neck injury” that allowed the Ravens to bench him without Flacco losing face.
