Cam Newton played his first game for the Panthers since Week Two of the 2019 season against the Cardinals last Sunday and he looks set to make his first start of his second tour with Carolina this Sunday.

Panthers head coach Matt Rhule told reporters on Wednesday that the team is preparing both Newton and P.J. Walker to play against the Washington Football Team, but that it is “trending” toward Newton getting the start. An official announcement will come later this week, but it’s hard to see why anything other than an injury would change the momentum away from Newton.

Newton was 3-of-4 for eight yards and a touchdown in last Sunday’s win over the Cardinals. He also ran three times for 14 yards and a touchdown a few days after signing with the team.

Ron Rivera was the Panthers head coach when Newton last started a game for the team, but he’ll be coaching the other side in what’s shaping up to be his return to the Panthers’ starting lineup.

  1. Let this be “Exhibit A” when it comes to talks of expanding the number of teams in the league. There is clearly a small number of QB’s that can excel in this league, which is why we get the re-treads like Newton and Gabbert. The fans deserve better.

  2. Cam is a good guy and a real team player, but he’s no longer a starting QB. There’s a reason that Carolina cut him……and New England cut him…..andit’s not because he was doing well.

He’s make a good backup, but to expect him to suddenly become a great QB is a fool’s errand.

  3. Darnold has 7 td passes this year thumbs up cam has more or thumbs down he ends with less. Last year cam had 8 all year.

  4. Short yardage or goal line, sure go with Cam. A full game, I’dI stick with Darnold. Either way Panthers will get a top 3 QB in a pretty unimpressive QB class.

  5. I realize there is a lot of nostalgia going on in Carolina right now. I’d personally stick with Walker. He’s had the offense humming with CMC back. If Cam comes back as the starter don’t you think he’ll feel the pressure to prove people wrong? He can contribute but I think it’s in a limited fashion. Let Walker work with a healthy CMC and see what happens. Cam was considered washed last year by everyone. Now everyone is considering him the savior. I just don’t see it. Panthers can be competitive with Walker just stay the course because this isn’t a legitimate SB contender I’m sorry.

  6. With Ron Rivera on the other side of the field, this becomes very personal and entertaining. Getcha popcorn ready! Is/was Cam the right fit for Carolina? One of these guys gets proven wrong Sunday.

Not really. Mid season replacements post trade deadline are not in any way a statement to QB skill level in college football. Keep in mind each team gets at least 2 and some teams do not value having a starter caliber backup because they’re comfortable with the starter in place and don’t want a controversy resulting in them just having a scout team arm that they don’t intend to actually have play. Also having two starter caliber QB’s costs more and few teams want to over pay someone to hold a clip board.

  8. I’ve got nothing against Cam and I’d like to see him succeed, but I was rooting for Darnold to redeem himself after getting Jets’d at the start of his career.

I know a lot of people don’t like Cam because he wears hats and likes to dress up and all kinds of other important football things, but I’m rooting for him to do well.

  9. I cant wait until he throws 2 pics and fumbles and they lose because there will be some awesome videos of that clipped with the “I’m Back!” Going to be epic.
