Justin Jefferson is “definitely trying” to follow Randy Moss

USA TODAY Sports

Vikings receiver Justin Jefferson has become the best young pass catcher the franchise has had since Randy Moss. Maybe Jefferson is every bit as good as Moss was.

On Sunday, Jefferson racked up the 11th 100-yard receiving game of his career. It’s his eleventh in two seasons, matching Moss and Steelers receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster for second in the Super Bowl era. Jefferson has seven games left to add to his total; the record is held by Odell Beckham Jr., who did it fifteen times in his first two years with the Giants.

Jefferson, who wears the number Moss wore in his rookie preseason in Minnesota, started the day wearing a Randy Moss T-shirt in pregame warmups. I asked Jefferson after the game to describe his relationship with the Hall of Famer who spent his first seven seasons in Minnesota.

“I mean, not a big enough relationship as I want to,” Jefferson said. “I admire him so much. Classified as one of the best if not the best receiver in history. Definitely trying to follow behind him. Definitely want that gold jacket.”

Jefferson will definitely get that gold jacket, if he keeps doing what he’s been doing. And as he does it, he’ll become a player that others will try to emulate.

“I try to be my own guy, but I like to put a couple other players’ moves like releases in my own game,” Jefferson said. “I try to be like myself. Just try to act like myself, play like myself. I feel like I have that confidence.”

Hopefully, he’ll also have that relationship with Moss, too. After seeing Jefferson in that Moss T-shirt on Sunday, maybe Moss will give him a call.

  1. Joe Burrow’s receivers at LSU, Jefferson and Chase are superstars in the NFL, Mac Jones’ receivers at Alabama, Waddle and Smith are just good in the NFL. Can we finally admit Mac Jones turned good receivers into superstars and NFL teams missed it except Bill Belichick? It was a fantastic draft by the Patriots.

  2. It’s well documented that Randy Moss took plays off….Justin Jefferson,on the other hand doesn’t.

It’s well documented that Moss ran more go routes than anybody in the nfl. And, instead of them heading to the sidelines to get a breather, he stayed on the field to act as a decoy on running plays. Yes, when the play call was a run to the other side, Moss stood there and did nothing. Nothing is what he would be doing on the sidelines. But again, Moss being on the field meant defenses had to respect that he might get the ball.

Oh, but some of you want to play on Moss saying; “I play when I want to play”. You know what he was doing when he said that? He was playing the media and he was playing you. Not a single defensive coordinator or opponent ever believed Moss was dogging it when he was on the field.

Moss is the best WR to ever play the game. Yes, better than Rice. Rice was great, but he didn’t have nearly the taken as Moss. What Rice had was back to back HOF QB’s throwing him the ball.

  4. Football today is not the same as it was for Moss. Whoever said this is a victim of too many booster shots.

  5. The Vikings won the Super Bowl today. Just ask their fans.
The fact is, they are still a mediocre team and the Packers will win the division again while the Vikings will not make the playoffs.
And — good old Kirk Cousins almost blew it again. Had the Packers DB Darnell Savage been able to hold onto that interception late in the 4th quarter, Vikings fans would be ripping Cousins and the Vikings again.
The Vikings will never win a championship with Cousins at QB — and their fans know it.

    Florio’s Super Bowl today.

Go drink a spotted cow and chill. Your favorite football team lost a great game against a team that has been improving every week and may have found itself against the chargers. Jan 2 at lambeau should be just as fun!

  8. You can’t compare players from different eras based on statistics. Every QB & WR today has better stats than 10-50 years ago. The NFL changes the rules every 5 years to increase offense & scoring. Jefferson is off to a great start to his career, but as good as he is, he’s not Moss.

  9. It has taken too long but it appears that the Vikings & Cousins trust Jefferson. They get him the ball as they should the last 2 weeks. Better late than never I guess by why did it take so long?

  10. JJ is a marvelous receiver, but he’s not Moss. Nobody was, is, or likely ever will be. Moss fundamentally changed the NFL game.

  11. I’m glad we finally caught a break after the Rice, Williamson, and Treadwell drafts.

  12. Follow Randy Moss in being overrated? By the way, Vikings cheated yesterday. Darnell Savage had an Interception and that should have been Packers ball but Goodell had to make sure his beloved Vikings won. Enjoy it Cheaters.

  13. I like this kid. He’s got crazy talent. I’ll continue liking him until he does something selfishly, narcissistically, Moss-like.
