The Carolina-Washington storyline was Cam Newton vs. Ron Rivera.

Newton returned to the Panthers last week and on Sunday made his first start in his second stint in Carolina. Rivera spent nine seasons in Carolina, drafting Newton with the No. 1 overall choice in 2011.

But Taylor Heinicke played the part of hero, delivering a 27-21 victory to Rivera and the Washington Football Team. It was Washington’s second win in a row as they climbed back to 4-6. Carolina fell to 5-6.

Heinicke completed 16 of 22 passes for 206 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for 29 yards on six carries.

Heinicke threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Cam Sims, a 12-yarder to Terry McLaurin and a 4-yarder to DeAndre Carter. Joey Slye kicked field goals of 36 and 29 yards in the fourth quarter to deliver the win against his former team.

Washington was 6-of-13 on third down and 2-for-2 on fourth down as it gained 369 yards.

Terry McLaurin had five catches for 103 yards and a touchdown.

Newton had a chance to deliver a comeback victory, but his storybook tale ended without the ending everyone in Carolina wanted Sunday. Kamren Curl stopped Christian McCaffrey just short of a first down on fourth-and-three from their own 34 with 2:53 left.

Then, after a Washington field goal, and with the Panthers trailing by six, Carolina faced fourth-and-three at the Washington 49 with 1:11 left. Newton was sacked by Daron Payne for a 3-yard loss with 1:05 remaining.

Newton finished 21-of-27 for 189 yards and two touchdowns. He ran for a touchdown, rushing for 46 yards on 10 carries.

  1. So many penalties by Carolina, and the inability for the defense to get off the field on 3rd and 4th down. Anyone who thinks the Panthers lost because of the guy under center didn’t watch the game.

  2. Taylor Heinicke just beat two former MVPs back to back. Maybe WFT has found a long term answer at QB.

    Who’s back?

Newton. He played alright today. He gave them a chance to win, something Sam Darnold hasn’t done since week 3.

  4. Any of the commenters that are blaming Newton for this loss know very little about the game.

  5. Cam is the energy the fanbase needed however getting Cam’s energy still can’t help Matt Rhule learn how to be a good head coach.

  6. Heineke looking better all the time. He’ll be ready next season to take over for the Steelers. πŸ˜€

    lol!!

Nothing worse than a Newton or Panthers fan trying to lecture us about the fundamentals of the sport.

  8. What is apparent is Cam Cheating is NO QB. He is a very sluggish and slow running back with a very low ability to process defenses.

Kinda funny that the real coming home story, Heinicke, was ignored by the narrative of Cam Cheating returning to the home of “won’t fall on any stinkin’ fumble”.

Heinicke so outplayed Cam Cheating and looked like the only QB on the field. Even when Heinicke runs he looks like he is twice as fast as that bad hair day in a number one uniform. What’s up with that hair?

No one is arguing that Newton has great passing mechanics or the fundamentals of the sport. You’re making a strawman argument, per usual. Newton gave them a chance to win today. I’ll tell you right now though, Newton has better passing mechanics than your boy Jarrett Stidham. Can’t believe you trash Newton. You’re so ungrateful for him giving our Patriots his all last year. And while he was far from good, he single handedly won us a few games last season and kept us in it in some others.

  10. Right now Heinicke has won more starts than that washed up former Ohio State fraud, Haskins-Robbins, the multi-flavored turnover machine.

The Washington team has found their recipe – run the ball – keep their defense on the sidelines and let Heinicke be Heinicke where it is needed.

What has become apparent is Washington’s defense is no better – but keeping the ball keeps them on the sidelines and it gives that putrid collection of fools from committing 15 yard penalties.

  11. “Rivera just exposed Newton’s weak arm, can’t throw deep.”

That 30-yard dart he threw to McCaffrey for a TD must have gotten caught in a strong tailwind…

It was in full display last season.

  13. Hail to the Redskins. Now those draft prognosticators are going to whine over the win because they really want a top 5 pick to take a QB that shouldn’t even go in the first round.

  14. I’m no fan of Cam Newton but he did the best he could today and they could have won. He threw a couple fastballs that Heinicke just can’t. But Heinicke makes things happen! Second game in a row with no interceptions or fumbles. I wish they could coach up Gibson on how to hold the ball better somehow

  15. Does anyone realize that Heinicke broke Steve McNair’s all-time FCS passing record when @ Old Dominion? He was the GA High School player of the year & if he’s been 1/2″ taller he would’ve been recruited by GA instead of just GA State. Watched him play @ODU = this is no surprise
