Matthew Stafford reportedly has various injuries, even if he’s not on the injury report

USA TODAY Sports

The Rams emerge from their bye today, and their quarterback officially is healthy.

Unofficially, he’s a mess.

According to Dianna Russini of ESPN.com, Stafford “has been dealing with pain in his throwing arm, his elbow, a sore ankle, and chronic back pain, per sources. He will play today.”

It’s a given that he’ll play; he’s not on the injury report. At all. The question is whether he’ll be affected by any of this.

This year, Stafford’s name showed up only once on the injury report, with a back issue in Week Nine. He didn’t practice on Wednesday or Thursday, was limited on Friday, and received no injury designation heading into the Sunday night game against the Titans.

He hasn’t played well since then, with two straight prime-time losses. And if he truly has these various injuries, the Rams may have some explaining to do as to why he hasn’t been listed as injured. Unless he has received no treatment from the team, the Rams could have a problem.

Then again, it’s also possible that this is just an overblown case of excuse making from the Stafford camp. The MVP train has sputtered in recent weeks. If the explanation isn’t that he’s banged up, then the truth could be he’s just not playing very well.

Regardless, the Rams are looking at three losses in a row. If Stafford really is banged up, it becomes even harder to turn things around at a place where, based on his 12 years with the Lions, he knows a thing or two about losing.

  1. This is exactly what the naysayers have be n saying about Stafford. A very talented born loser whose body has been wearing down (oh but he doesn’t miss many games, so he can’t be injured!).

  2. If the quarterback’s name were Brady, everyone would be raving about what a world-class tough guy he was.

  3. It’s week 12. Teams have played ten or 11 games. Most guys that aren’t even on any injured lists are pretty banged up. You can’t play in ten NFL games and not have a few bumps and bruises. Geez, in the last ten weeks I’ve had a few bumps and bruises, and I don’t even play football.

  4. Stafford is one of the toughest dudes in football. Dude is a warrior. Been underrated his whole career. Even though I don’t root for the Rams, I’ll always root for Stafford.

  5. Name one NFL starter that isn’t banged up somewhat this late in the season, kickers excluded.

  6. We’ve seen this story played out several times in Detroit. Hopefully it will end differently for the Rams than it did for the Lions.

  7. From what? It’s not like he’s been taking a lot of big shots. For most of the Rams season the pass rush wasn’t getting near him.

  8. Every year Stafford blows, and then his PR guy says he’s hurt, despite not being on the injury report. This is like the 6-7 year in a row.

  9. Stafford is completely overrated. He’s not quite garbage, but he’s definitely not more than a mid level guy and not worth the price the Rams paid for him. Like Matt Ryan, the media feels the need to hype him when he’s no better than Cousins and not significantly better than Dalton or even Goff.

If he wasnt limited by his injuries and theres no question hes not going to miss the game then unless in the last few weeks the nfl has changed injury reporting policies the Rams did nothing wrong.

  11. Stafford thought he was too good for the Patriots instead he went to a team that expects him to carry them. That’s not a winning formula long term. They don’t have a running game, the defense is good but not great to carry the offense. It’s all on Stafford shoulders.
