Kirk Cousins on lining up behind the guard: “Just got under the wrong guy”

Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins committed one of the bonehead plays of this NFL season in Sunday’s loss to the 49ers, lining up behind the guard instead of the center and realizing it so late that he had to waste a timeout to avoid a delay of game penalty. Afterward, he didn’t have much of an explanation.

“We just didn’t get lined up properly and the play clock was winding down,” Cousins said. “I was just moving, trying to get everybody settled up and just got under the wrong guy.”

Really, what more can be said than that? Cousins isn’t the first quarterback to make that mistake, but to do it at such an important time — on fourth-and-goal with the Vikings trailing by eight points in the fourth quarter — was incredibly disappointing.

After the timeout, Cousins threw an incomplete pass over receiver Justin Jefferson‘s head, and the Vikings missed their best chance to tie the game.

  1. The whole team lining up on that play was a disaster…didn’t seem like anybody knew where to go.

  2. I’m not sure they would’ve had time to get the play off regardless, but still a bad look during what was a bad game for Kirk. The back to back plays where Cook and Deebo were injured, almost looked like Space Jam when the Monstars suck their talent out.

  3. That was right up there with the butt fumble and whatever it is the Colts tried against the Patriots that night.

  4. Not a big fan but they are deadly in the red zone and I’ve never seen them miss a two point conversion. I know they practice various two point conversion plays depending on the defense they see and understand you dont have time to think so you better know your role and the play thats called.
Its more likely while trying to get guys lined up for the play he was calling he just got confused with the clock running down.
The big thing is over throwing jefferson. Had he not done that they would have probably tied the game and won.

  5. A slightly over .500 season is still very possible, as is extending Zimmer’s alternate year playoff participation record.

The Colts, that would be the “Rusty Gate” play lolz

  7. I’m glad he isn’t my team’s QB.

He may be a bit of a left handed monkey wrench but the dude’s got 3k yards, 23 TD’s vs 3 INT’s. Nothing to sneeze at.

Viking fans can totally relate, as they lined up behind the wrong team.

That’s not fair. Most of ’em are fans due to geography and/or genealogy, just like us. We didn’t bail on the Pack in “the dark times” between Lombardi/Starr and Holmgren/Favre and they haven’t bailed on their team even though it would be just about as convenient at times. They’re a loyal fan base. Most of them are even sane.

  9. I thought it was going to be a trick play with the ball being snapped directly to the RB, but I guess not…

And the vikings are 5-6. Stats do not give you wins. Wins give you wins and that is the only thing that matters.

That’s dumb, sorry. I’ve watched too many Packer seasons of great QB play go down the drain due to poor defense, coaching, special teams, etc. The Viking QB IS doing his job, better than most.
