T.J. Watt: Absolutely embarrassing to play like this

The Steelers finished strong in a Week 11 loss to the Chargers and that created some hope that they would be able to put together a strong performance against the Bengals on Sunday.

Cincinnati didn’t take long to dash those hopes. They went up 10-0 in the first quarter and had a 24-3 lead when cornerback Mike Hilton picked off Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and returned the interception for a touchdown with 30 seconds to play in the first half.

The 41-10 Bengals win dropped the Steelers to 5-5-1 on the season and 0-2-1 in their last three games. Linebacker T.J. Watt said the team has to draw a line in the sand now or the season will be lost.

“It wasn’t something any of us are proud of,” Watt said, via Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com. “You never want to have that feeling coming out of a game. We put it on tape and now we have to own it, move forward and know that everybody sees what just happened today and what we can expect moving forward. We have to stop this before it continues to unravel and become a bigger issue than what it already is. We can’t keep playing like this. It’s absolutely embarrassing.”

The Bengals ran for 198 yards and the Steelers have given up 586 rushing yards during the last three games. Defensive end Cam Heyward said it’s “probably” the worst defense he’s been part of in Pittsburgh and that the team “won’t win another damn game” unless they get things fixed.

  1. Watt’s frustration clearly boiled over when trying to hold Burrow. Amateur hour. Your season is already lost.

  2. The defense was horrible the last 2 weeks. Couldn’t stop the run or pass, at all. Really, they are currently weak on their OL and DL, so they lose the battle at the line of scrimmage. Not sure what they can do about it other than the guys they have need to man up and play some football. They do have some cap space but for some reason they don’t want to spend it. Also, Canada’s play calling is terrible. Najee runs the ball only 8 times yesterday? No excuse.

  3. Oh, c’mon man! Embarrassing? That would be like losing to Tim Tebow and getting beat by Blake Bortles in the playoffs, or only winning 3 playoff games in over 10 years with a Hall of fame QB, or having a coach that trips other players. Getting punked by the Bengals twice in the same year isn’t that embarrassing!

  4. Yes, it’s embarrassing when everyone knows the only talent you possess is dirty play.

  5. You can’t fix lack of talent. The play calling and scheme can be fixed but If I know Tomlin, that will not happen.

  6. Its embarrassing for TK Watt to grab Joe Burrow by the collar and lose his cool.
Keep your cool or cost your team.

  7. They lost to the better team.
That’s not embarrassing, it’s just the reality that’s finally hitting the Steelers’ franchise.
They should have moved on from Roethlisberger after 2019. That their quarterback situation remains so dire is on them, as is the diminished state of their offensive line.
Mike Tomlin isn’t the person who should be criticized for the talent drain that has happened to the Pittsburgh roster over these past few years. Kevin Colbert is the guy who thought keeping and aging Big Ben and Mason Rudolph as their quarterbacks was a good idea, never mind restocking on lineman as their group aged or drafting a running back in the first round.
