Sean Payton on Taysom Hill starting: We’ll see how he does Wednesday

A report earlier this week said that Taysom Hill will get the first-team reps at quarterback at Saints practice this week, which would put him in line to start against the Cowboys on Thursday night.

Hill didn’t play at all last week because of a foot injury, but was a full participant in practice for the second straight day on Tuesday. Head coach Sean Payton said at his Tuesday press conference that the foot is doing better, but that he wants to see where things are on Wednesday before making a call between him and Trevor Siemian.

“We’ll see. Yeah, we’ll see. We want to see how Taysom is doing tomorrow,” Payton said, via Katherine Terrell of TheAthletic.com. “Obviously we’re trying to get him back off this foot. It’ll be either he or Trevor.”

Hill started four games at quarterback when Drew Brees was injured last season, but Siemian took over when Jameis Winston went down with a torn ACL in a Week Eight win over the Buccaneers. The Saints have lost four straight since that game and are 5-6 heading into Thursday night.

  1. The Saints have been hyping this guy for several years now, yet when Brees retired they handed over the reigns to a couple of retread QBs that nobody else thought deserved to be starters. If Hill couldn’t beat out Trevor Siemian until he lost four straight (and thus they have no other choice) that says it all.

  2. If both Armstead and Ramczeck remain out it may be better to use Seimian at qb and let Hill sit or play other positions.

  3. Hill deserves the shot. What he brings can help the Saints. When you can’t score more than 7 points in 3 quarters every week, there is no real worse downside.

Maybe people just don’t follow the Saints but he had a brutal concussion weeks ago and the foot problem shortly after. That’s the reason they went with Trevor not because they don’t believe he’s unable.

He went 3-1 as a starter last year. He made some ugly mistakes in those 4 games but they won. The Saints don’t need pretty, just enough wins to sneak into the playoffs.

    Hill deserves the shot.

This is professional football…..nobody “deserves “ anything

  5. Desperate times require desperate actions. Saints have no other option going forward. I hope the team can somehow right the ship and qualify for the expanded playoff format.

  6. 10 years later, Hill is still on the roster waiting for the right time to get his shot. This glorified more accurate Tim Tebow gets so much hype blown up his butt from Payton.

3-1 as a starter last year! Good job… against teams that went on to finish the season with 4-12 and 5-11 records. He didn’t exactly toss a lot of TD passes those games either.

  8. How about he has earned the shot instead of deserves then.
Any sorry, but even in the nfl if you earn something, then you deserve it. You work all week, you deserve your pay.

  9. Hill is hurt so Siemian is the only healthy QB available. Unless he has a superhuman tolerance to pain I do not expect him to run like he has in the past. He would have already been playing as the starter aside from his injury.
