Career day puts T.J. Watt in very elite company, gives him shot at single-season sack record

As of late Friday afternoon, it was widely believed that Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt would miss Sunday’s game against the Ravens due to a positive COVID test from a week ago. As of late Sunday afternoon, Watt was creating havoc.

Unexpectedly cleared after an absence of only five days, Watt had a career-high 3.5 sacks against Baltimore, despite not practicing. He also didn’t bite on the fake handoff on the game-deciding two-point try, getting in the face of quarterback Lamar Jackson and forcing his hand on a throw that went off the hand of tight end Mark Andrews.

And here’s the biggest development of the day. Watt now has a career-high 16 sacks. He also has four straight seasons of 13 or more sacks. Only one other player has done that. His name is Reggie White.

With five games left, Watt needs only 6.5 sacks to tie the all-time single-season sack record of 22.5.

Can he do it? Indeed he can. He has 16 sacks in only 10 games (the Steelers lost both games he missed). At that rate, he’ll get eight in the final five. And that means he’ll finish with 24.0 sacks.

Even though the Steelers have struggled in 2021, they’d be struggling even more without Watt, who should be regarded as the favorite to win defensive player of the year and who quite possibly should get some MVP votes if he breaks Michael Strahan’s asterisk-stained record and wills the Steelers to the postseason.

  1. Myles Garret is a better prototype pass rusher but does not affect the run nearly as much as Watt. Best in the league

  2. I am in no way a Watt or Steelers fan, but I’d love for him to get the record, legitimately. Strahan’s record is tainted. And kind of pathetic to get it that way.

  3. sure he can do it. all he needs is for brett farve to come out of retirement and give himself up a few times for some bogus sacks.

  4. It’s funny that you mention Strahan. Look at Watt’s two sacks against the Packers. Sticking out his foot to deliberately trip Rodgers, and later, touching Rodgers down after Rodgers gave himself up.

If Strahan’s record comes with an asterisk, Watt’s certainly has to as well.

  5. It would be nice if he gets it against Cleveland during the Monday Night home game (Jan 3). The following week is at Baltimore, the last game of the season, so TJ should really be able to pad the sack stat total.

All the records will fall in 17 and 18 game seasons.

  7. Is TJ Watt the overrated guy a certain Pats troll. Said was a bust? Just asking for a friend. What is impressive he is doing during the toughest schedule in the MFL too.

When you have no other responsibilities but to rush the passer.

    ===========

Yeah, quarterbacks aren’t that important either since all they do is throw the ball.

  9. This is the same player who held out at the beginning of training camp and signed a huge contract just before the season started. Turns out he seems to be worth every dime. Looks like the Steelers did the right thing here.

  10. Ravens fan here,

Tough to watch the havoc he created yesterday, but have to respect him. As much as I dislike the Steelers, I feel like he deserves that sack record.

    ————————————-
He drops into coverage almost 30% of the time.
He led the league last year in tackles for loss.
    He has 4 career interceptions

    17 game season *

He’s missed 2 games. So if gets it it will be in 15 games = legitimate

  13. Strahan’s sack was legit. Favre said so. MS had a clear shot on him had he not gone down. Why do any of you think Favre has the game streak record? He was always smart enough not to take any unnecessary hits. Watts record would have an asterisk. He played the extra game. Do it in 16 games and the record is yours.

  14. “I’m sure many records will fall now that there are 17 game seasons.” Also, one record will now be more brutal to beat – the ’72 Dolphins Perfect Season, even though perfection then meant 14 regular-season games and three postseason wins.

  15. Ya’ll saying its a 17 game season but also don’t mention T.J missed 2 1/2 games. If he plays those games he’s probably around 19-20 sacks right now

  16. Deacon Jones

    22 sacks in 1964…. a 14 game season

The head slap was a legal move, I am not sure we need to compare that one.

  17. Not a Steelers fan, so this is a legit question. How many of those sacks have come against double/triple teams?

  18. Neutral on the Steelers, but much respect to TJ. He is Earning. Every. Penny. of that massive contract extension he signed at the start of the season.

  19. No offense to Watt or Steelers fans but records set this season and going forward should note the extra game. This goes for all stats. Just think about Marino’s 5000 yard season in the 80s. Only reason that was broken is because the change in how defenders can touch WRs and QBs. The NFL is about money and entertainment. That’s why eventually even though Brady has played forever his individual records will fall as well. They’ll eventually add another game and 5000 yards will be easily attainable for most journeyman QBs.
