Mike Zimmer on close games: We don’t have to make it like this

After the Vikings went from being up 29-0 to holding off the Steelers 36-28 on Thursday night, their head coach Mike Zimmer joked that the team’s penchant for playing games that come down to the wire is a good thing for the NFL’s television ratings.

It’s not great for the team’s stress levels and Zimmer addressed that angle during a Friday morning press conference. Zimmer said he saw the team start to feel like “here we go again” as the Steelers began cutting into the lead in the second half and said that he thinks the team gets away from their fundamentals in those moments of games.

“I really feel like if we start being more disciplined in our alignments, our techniques, where we’re supposed be and what we’re supposed to do,” Zimmer said. “We don’t have to make it like this. That’s what I’m going to stress to our players.”

Zimmer promised that the players will get a “full dose” of that message when they return from a few days off after Thursday night’s win and they’ll try for a more comfortable outcome against the Bears on Monday night in Week 15.

  1. When Bobby Petrino bailed on the Falcons, his DC, Mike Zimmer, issued some tough talk about how “gutless” Petrino was and got himself some attention in the bargain.

Aside from that, and getting the Vikings to the 2017 NFCCG only to watch his defense get torched by a backup QB, what has he done that is noteworthy?

  2. Well, no. When Zim starts one of the worst corners in the league, and then calls a prevent defense against teams that have no timeouts left? Well, that’s on Zim.

  3. Or play like you do in the first half the whole game. Your prevent defense and defensive line not attacking is what will get you canned ol man!!! Oh yea and dont get me started on your archaic running up the middle 3 times in a row!

  4. The Vikings have talent. There’s a disconnect somewhere. I’m optimistic this game is a springboard to better things ahead, for the Vikings.

  5. “I really feel like if we start being more disciplined in our alignments, our techniques, where we’re supposed be and what we’re supposed to do,” Zimmer said. “We don’t have to make it like this. That’s what I’m going to stress to our players.”

Translation – If the Vikings were better coached, they would not make it like this.

  6. My Vikings, been following them from the beginning (yes, unfortunately I’m that old) and it’s been brutal with so many heartbreaking losses. The gods of football don’t look kindly on my Vikings and I’m hoping before I go to meet my dad (miss’em like crazy) we can have one miracle season-for all us Vikings devotees.

  7. Now I am no so called expert on football history, but isn’t it traditional for fans of the winning team to be happy?

  8. Bears are going to get demolished next week against a rested Vikes team. Could get UGLY.

  9. It will be a springboard when Zimmer gets fired. His poor scheming, lack of in game adjustments and lack of aggressive play calling are the Vikings problem. Can we say DOUG PEDERSON!

  10. Hate to say this but Vikings were lucky to hold on for the win. Don’t know how Vikings management can be happy about an ugly win like this.

…when Zimmer gets fired…Can we say DOUG PEDERSON!

    ——-

Careful what you wish for. Success with Doug is not a lock. Doug looked great the year he beat you in the big game, but aside from that, it was head-scratching decisions, blowout losses, and dysfunction all around.

And nice guy that he appears to be, on his way out the door, he didn’t hesitate to throw his fair share of people under the bus while playing the meek, “poor-me-I’m-just-a-nice-guy” victim role.

In short: based on everything we know about Doug, the ceiling’s high, but the floor is mighty low and in shabby condition.

  12. Zimmer needs to go, its time. Hes the coach, same thing as when they lost to the hapless Lions and the prevent defense since it worked so well last time

  13. It wouldn’t have ben that way IF the refs did there jobs and called all those”DELAY OF GAME PENALTIES”
what was there 2-3 on the steelers alone.

  14. Becareful what you wish for with Zim getting fired. You could end up in a coaching carousel that can really set a franchise back by 3-4 years if you don’t get the right guy. If the Vikes management does fire Zim, Eric Bieniemy should be a top priority!
