When the Jaguars hired Urban Meyer as their head coach, some observers immediately speculated that he’d be like Bobby Petrino, a former college coach who simply didn’t fit in the NFL. That comparison proved to be very accurate.

Meyer, who was fired late Wednesday night, is the first NFL head coach since Petrino to leave before finishing his first season on the job.

Petrino quit the Falcons after 13 games with a 3-10 record to become head coach at Arkansas.

Meyer is fired by the Jaguars after 13 games with a 2-11 record. Meyer does not have a college coaching job waiting for him.

Petrino had success at Arkansas on the field but was fired for personal misconduct involving a woman he had an affair with. He is now the head coach at Missouri State.

Meyer may find himself another college job and may find success again: He’s one of the most successful coaches in college football history. But it’s safe to say that, like Petrino, he’s done in the NFL after 13 games. Meyer’s tactics simply didn’t work on grown men, and he’s done coaching professionals.

  1. When you have a worse winning percentage than Pettibone, that’s really saying something. At least Petrino didn’t have a QB and still won three games.

  2. Wow, never thought I’d see the day where Bobby Petrino had a more successful run as HC in the NFL over anyone else

  3. I give Khan credit for doing the right thing and not the easy thing in this case.

His heart seems to be in the right place, even if the results haven’t been there.

  4. Let’s see how Urban can do at say, University of Minnesota? He won at Florida and Ohio State. Wow, my Aunt Edna could pull a few titles if she coached there during those respective times.

  5. Reminds me of the Rick Pitino experience in Boston. “My way of the highway”. He had no idea how to handle grown men who make millions of dollars per year. Threats of losing scholarships &/or being out of the school’s program don’t work at this level. Apparently UM isn’t a student of history. I bet the entire locker room is cheering today.

  6. Chip Kelly was canned by the Eagles after the 15th game of the 2015 season, i.e., after Bobby Petrino left the Falcons mid-season in 2007.

  7. It is a much different time, it may be really hard for a college board to sign this guy to a mountain of money.

It may be a smaller university but someone will do it. Just don’t think it’s going to be a top school.

  8. “Josh McDaniels? Brian Daboll?”

Josh McDaniels was first in his seconda season and Brian DAboll was never a head coach…

  9. I still believe Meyer would have signed on with the Jets, if they would have had the #1 pick. I think Meyer couldn’t resist the temptation of coaching Trevor Lawrence in a league where the team with the best QB wins just about every time. Once Meyer got the lay of the land in Jacksonville, and realized it was a no-win situation, he sabotaged himself to get run out of town. Urban’s not hurting for money, and he’ll be able to call his shot.
