Raiders’ K.J. Wright rips NFLPA: I pay my player dues just to get lied to

After the NFL Players Association pushed for postponements, the NFL has given in and decided to delay three games this week, including Raiders-Browns, to accommodate teams that have been ravaged by COVID-19. And some Raiders players think something fishy is going on.

That’s because the president of the Players Association is Browns center J.C. Tretter, and Raiders linebacker K.J. Wright is among those who think the union is favoring the Browns with its lobbying to give them more time to prepare.

“I pay my player dues just to get lied to and the rules bent,” Wright wrote. “If it was the other way around I swear we would be playing tomorrow.”

Wright directed one tweet at Tretter and said, “let’s keep our word President. This is pretty simple to me.” Raiders cornerback Casey Hayward similarly took a shot at Tretter.

In Wright’s opinion, the Browns should either be able to field a team of the players who are available, or forfeit the game.

“I just wanna play ball,” Wright said. “I would say play or forfeit.”

But that isn’t happening. Instead, the Raiders are being told that they have to delay their game by 48 hours this week, then play on short rest next week, to accommodate the Browns.

  1. He’s right. There’s no fair way to do this if you make an exception for one team. You either have to postpone all the games this week (which they can’t do given how few games are left this season) or just play as scheduled. Same thing happened to Denver last year. The Browns should stop whining and play the game

  2. The Pats were forced to play the Chiefs last season without their starting QB. Why are the Browns being favored by the NFL?

As always, the NFL makes up their rules as they go and favors some franchises over others.

  3. We wouldn’t be having these virus and variant issues in the first place if enough people in this country had gotten vaccines in the 1st place when they became available. But we have too many idiots who believe the fake news that the virus is a flu and a hoax and vaccines will make you sicker than the virus

  4. demaurice smith innocent in all this??
    i think not.
remember this when its time to vote on him leading your union next time

  5. The NFL is getting shadier and shadier. No transparency, and no consistency. I am becoming less and less of a fan.

  6. NFL is on very thin ice and may grab the NFLPA’s ankle when it breaks through. But money talks and assurances will come out of the respective offices that ‘we will do better next season.’

  7. Denver had to play last year even though they had no QB’s available. The Steelers were gifted a postphonement…

  8. Absolutely right.

The only fair solution would have been to let vaccinated, asymptomatic players play.

And honestly, it’s very possible the COVID lists will now get LONGER following these postponements. NFL has zero foresight and zero guts to lead into the endemic phase of this virus.

  9. “I just wanna play ball,” Wright said. “I would say play or forfeit.”

Yeah, you’re gonna play ball… on Monday.

  10. Hes 100% correct. My RAIDERS are hated by everyone since Al Davis first was involved in trying to move them the first time. What about the poor Broncos last year w/ no QB?? terrible by the NFL and players union

  11. If you force a forfeit, you give the Browns and the Raiders a bye this week. Then, whoever plays either of those teams next week is at a huge competitive disadvantage. Because you can’t be inconvenienced?

  12. Browns now also get the benefit of seeing what the other teams results are befor they have to play.

  13. Denver played a game with like a practice squad QB last year. So did New England. Let’s keep it consistent. I know Cleveland is feel good story but come on.

  14. Why is the league testing vaccinated players at all?! There’s not reason to test a vaccinated player unless they are sick and have symptoms. The NFL created its own problem by testing vaccinated player to begin with.

  15. Isn’t that what the NFL said in the offseason. That if there are Outbreaks teams would forfeit games?

  16. Welcome to a union… I’ve been in one for 15 years in a non right for work state. Taking your money and lying to your face is there modas opriendi…

  17. I absolutely despise the Raiders and I will be the first to say, he is not wrong. If roles were reversed, I fully believe the Raiders would be forced to play or forfeit.

  18. Last season the Steelers played 3 games in 13 days …the NFL is saying suck it up butter cup just like they did then

  19. If the roles were reversed? Please. The Browns are no league favorite. In fact, they were one of the teams also forced to play when decimated by COVID last year. There’s hardly a league conspiracy. Inconsistent and confusing? Ok

  20. Total crap. Play the games period. Roger said under no circumstances would games be moved. He said any covid issues equals a forfeit if you can’t play. Try not lying for once Rog.

  21. Everyone forgets facts…

Last year’s rules were different than this year’s rules. There was no vaccine. The protocols were different.

Last year the Raiders didn’t get their game postponed because a bunch of players were out on the town and broke the protocol at the time, thus their punishment was to play the game as scheduled.

Last year the Broncos were not postponed because their players weren’t following the rules that were imposed. Players in close quarters not wearing masks, and amazingly they all got COVID; thus their punishment was to play as scheduled without a QB.

Other teams (Steelers, Ravens, Titans, et al) were said to have followed the protocols of the time, but still had unfortunate COVID outbreaks, and had their games postponed.

This season has different rules, like no games will be forfeited if protocols are followed, and a high percentage of players involved are vaccinated. The Browns, Rams, and Football Team must have been following protocols in order to have this happen, so their games are being postponed. Personally, I see this backfiring anyway with more time before kickoff means more players/coaches could test positive.

I don’t necessarily agree with the games being postponed this weekend, but for anyone to say that the Browns or certain teams got preferential treatment this or last year is incorrect. Some teams were within the rules, and some teams were breaking protocol. That’s the difference.

It’s like telling all the kids they get a cupcake if they clean their room, 28 kids cleaned and 2 kids don’t clean, and those 2 STILL get a cupcake. How is that fair to the other 28 that followed what they were supposed to do to get the cupcake? With insubordination comes consequences.

  22. There’s no way the NFL can make this equitable. To be fair and treat all teams fairly, the NFL should cancel the rest of the season.

  23. Exactly why I have never joined a union. 100% of the time it’s self interest not collective interest being promoted.

  24. Well, the Raiders should protest by refusing the change of schedule. The Raiders should tell the league they’ll continue their preparation to play tomorrow.

  25. Last year Tennessee was practicing at the park during their Covid outbreak and the Steelers lost their bye week cause they had to reschedule. Then they moved the ravens game on thanksgiving for Wednesday and fort the Steelers to play 4 days later shut up Cleveland

Never belonged to one but you know how they work well enough to pontificate on the Internet. I’ll be sure to pay attention.

  27. KJ, you are 100% correct & don’t forget you had a front row seat to how the Corp. NFL works when they wanted Coach Gruden out & they cancelled him. The NFL is just evil and they don’t care one bit about the players safety just dollars, just dollars.

  28. So what I’m hearing from the raider fans is- we only have a possibility of winning if Cleveland plays backups or practice squad players. If that is your argument, then perhaps you do not belong in the NFL.

The Steelers didn’t have an outbreak. They were forced to play later because of the ravens outbreak. They had to play 3 games in 12 days. Before you post, do your homework.

  30. Given that two other games have been moved to Tuesday, meaning those four teams will be playing on an even shorter week than the Raiders, this Tweet did not age well.

    *****

You posted this even after the NFL and the NFLPA announced that two other games (neither involving the Raiders, obviously) had been moved to Tuesday. I find that very weird.

Or a veteran player that was going to get an extra day’s rest will now be forced to play after a short week.

  33. Are these posts for real? Browns getting special treatment, Raiders getting screwed, blah, blah, blah? Seriously? Do you really think the NFL would give up a coveted time slot on Saturday to help… the Browns??? Get a grip. This newest variant is exploding. Get your vaccination so more variants don’t continue after this one.

  34. I would agree that a team should have to play who they have available, but forfeits are tough to swallow for all involved. The owners don’t want a forfeit because that means lost revenue and a lot of schedule shuffling, potentially forcing a change in the playoff schedule and Super Bowl date. Also, the players don’t want forfeits either as they share in that revenue. Ripping Tretter seems a bit misplaced regardless of the team he plays for. As someone who represents his fellow players, the NFLPA has tried to get the NFL to move or postpone games in the past and the NFL rarely budges (games that had nothing to do with the Browns, by the way).

  35. Mark Davis continues to reep the punishment for his father suing the league. They should be in LA not Vegas and the game should be played tomorrow.

  36. right… the NFL only moved the browns raiders game… they totally didnt move any others this week for the same reason… er wait that destroys his narrative, sorry

  37. JC Tretter, the nflpa player rep pres getting some kick backs from the league. What a coward. Luckily he was playing the Raiders or the league wouldn’t of helped him.

Just sucks that we all follow this league but we know it’s not the same rules for each team. Depending on who the owner is and some players are on the team will determine if the league helps you get calls and benefits over other franchises

Doesn’t this happen every week in the nfl? Don’t think it’s a secret to the rest of the league that the Chiefs won and Chargers lost last night.

  39. COMPLETE RUBBISH! The rules were stated before the season began. There were several teams that suffered from the rules. They played and didn’t complain. There were several teams working hard (annoying their players) to keep their rosters from getting infected. Now they are being told it was all ‘flexible’. What happens if new players are infected on Monday? Do they get another couple days because the other team got a couple of days? COMPLETE RUBBISH!
