Washington team doctor: 21 of 23 COVID-positive players were healthy enough to practice

In a sign of how mild COVID-19 can be for fully vaccinated healthy young people, Washington’s team doctor says the overwhelming majority of Football Team players who tested positive this week are healthy enough to practice.

Washington Football Team doctor chief medical officer Anthony Casolaro told reporters today that 23 players tested positive for COVID-19, but only two of them had symptoms that would have led Casolaro to hold them out of practice. The other 21 were healthy enough that they would have been allowed to practice, if not for the NFL rules requiring all players who test positive to isolate.

Now the NFL rules are changing, and asymptomatic vaccinated players will not be tested at all. That means there will be far fewer players going on the COVID-19 reserve list — not necessarily because there will be fewer COVID-positive players, but because some of those vaccinated players will get COVID-19 but feel totally fine, never get tested and never find out they ever had the virus.

There are indications that increasing numbers of COVID-positive players have the omicron variant, which researchers say appears to be more contagious but less severe. That means the virus could spread through a locker room easily, but without making many, if any, players sick. The league is shifting its protocols for that reality, and for the remainder of the regular season and postseason, some players with COVID-19 will practice and play without ever knowing they had COVID-19.

  1. It would seem non-vaxed players who are positive are at less of a risk than non-vaxed players who are negative as they are already positive and because vaxed players will be playing while positive and can still spread it. So why not let the non-vaxed positive players play as well if they are healthy enough?

  2. So let me get this straight. Vaccinated players are testing positive too much so they stop testing them the once week. Unvaccinated players are tested once a day. And now are going to definitely be around asymptomatic vaxxed players. Why not just not test at all for anyone unless they are symptomatic?

The point is, vaccine status is meaningless. The best case scenario for getting vaccinated is if those who are vaccinated are asymptomatic. In words, they’re not “sick.”

  4. Remember he did not say 21 players were asymptotic. He said they were healthy enough to practice. There is huge difference.

Also. 50% of all doctors graduated in the bottom half of their class. Washington has had their medical advice questioned by players previously. There medical staff is more about saying players can play instead of what is in their beat interest

  5. No it does not mean the vaccine is causing the symptoms to be mild. It means the Omicron variant has morphed into something that spreads easily but has less serious symptoms. If the vaccines were effective against the variant, most of those infected would be non vaccinated people. It has been the opposite.

  6. You say covid is very mild for young healthy vaccinated people.

You know who else covid is very mild for? Young healthy non vaccinated people.

  7. The vaccines are doing their job! The hospitals are FULL of unvaccinated individuals! It’s not surprising that healthy vaccinated football players are not getting sick from COVID!

  8. A drunk driver is healthy enough to drive. It’s the innocent bystanders that lose their lives. Kill yourself, but stay away from the people who want to live. Seriously, your life belongs to you, but everyone else’s lives belong to them. Do what you want with your own life, but you don’t have the right to kill other people. Murder is illegal.

  9. Contagious? Get boosters? Are you all crazy? It doesn’t matter!!! We are all getting it! And it won’t go away even when it does go away. I’m a democrat and I believe they won’t let it die or take its course because they know it’s the only way to maybe get another term. And that maybe is a freaking long shot at best. There will not be another democratic president for over a decade. Good job.

  10. HIV is a sexually transmitted disease.
So that argument is just stupid.

Unfortunately a large portion of NFL fans are ignorant

  11. @leatherhelmets,

You do realize HIV can be spread by blood, correct?

How many times have you seen somebody get a cut from an elbow, etc in the NBA? I don’t watch that mess anymore, but in my memory it is not a rare occurrence. It is a physical, close contact game. Not as physical as the NFL mind you, but still not a game for the weak.

For someone proclaiming others to be ignorant, you come off as rather juvenile.

  12. Hopefully one of those is named Taylor Heinecke or Kyle Allen. Otherwise it’s game over for Washington.

  13. So what about magic? Can we not get smarter as a
    Society after 30 years?

Here’s a true story since you all live that word. I know 15 people who died. None were vaxxed.

  14. Two months ago the upvote/down vote story was very different on the website.

I’m very hopeful that reason is returning, with all the fruit it bears
