Mac Jones after Patriots lost to Colts: We didn’t practice well this week

The Patriots had their seven-game winning streak come crashing to a halt on Saturday night against the Colts. After the game, rookie quarterback Mac Jones tried to make sense of it.

“I just don’t think it was our best effort,” Jones told reporters. “It starts with me just throughout the week. We didn’t have a great practice every day, so it is what it is. You just have to move on and keep your head high and keep working, because no one’s going to feel sorry for ourselves. If you feel that way, then — you just can’t do that, and you just have to move on and work harder. That’s all you can do is just work harder.”

On the notion of the Patriots feeling sorry for themselves, Jones made a confusing remark as it relates to the bye week.

“The energy was kind of low [at practice],” Jones said, “maybe like feeling a little sorry for ourselves because we’re coming off the bye and stuff. Not to get into details, but we just didn’t practice well, and that just reflects how we played. And I didn’t practice good, and I know a lot of guys on our team felt the same way. So, we have to come to work every day and just be positive. It’s one game. It’s not the end of the world, but at the same time, we can play with those guys. They played great, but we also just shot ourselves in the foot. So, we just have to move on.”

It’s unclear why the Patriots would be “feeling a little sorry for ourselves because we’re coming off the bye.” If anything, they should have been rejuvenated after getting a break following 13 games in 13 weeks. And their win over the Bills should have given them a lift as they embarked on the final four games before the start of the postseason.

Perhaps the better explanation is that the Patriots got a little complacent after defeating the Bills, a little too satisfied with where they were and what they were doing. And that doesn’t fall to a rookie quarterback to keep it from happening; that lands on the coaching staff.

Now, the Pats have until next Sunday to get ready for the second half of their annual home-and-home with Buffalo. If the Bills beat the Panthers today, the stakes for the next one will be every bit as significant as they were for the last one.

  1. The refs didnt do them any favors. A lot of head shots that went un called. Had the refs been in the game and saw all the crap hits the colts were doing it would have been a different story.
Pats need to find out just who their receivers are and who they arent. Lot of routes being run wrong and the red zone offense is awful, running game non existent.

  2. The pats haven’t lost a game in 20 years according to their fans, because it’s always about the refs.

  3. Mac is referencing this: the game before the bye was on MNF, and then last night’s game was flexed to Saturday. So despite the latest possible bye week in an extra-long season, the days in between games were contracted from 14 to 12. McCourty in particular tweeted his displeasure about it.

  4. The Pats were due for a clunker and they certainly got it. The Colts beat them in all phases of the game. The interceptions were just killers. Hopefully Jones learns from them and gets better at ball protection and reads.

  5. Well, if they needed a reality check, I’d rather it came against the Colts than the Bills next week. But it sucked. I’m going to say McDaniels was way too conservative early. Like for 3 quarters. By the time they got desperate, it was too late. Kind of the reverse of the Bills game.

  6. This loss really puts a spotlite on next week. Next week will show if this team is legit or a fraudulant.

  7. I can’t remember seeing a QB have that much time in the pocket.

The Pats are always smart about that. The O-line has always been a top priority.

People keep saying that Jones is the best QB from the class – but clearly, he’s in a great situation. He wouldn’t look good in NY or Jax.

  8. Colts came out on fire, Patriots came out lethargic and got pushed around.

It looked like a blowout early on, I was shocked the Patriots fought back to 20-17 in the 4th.

  9. I thought the Pats were really going to win out and hold that one seed, totally different thought today, KC back where it belongs and now that they have kicked it into high gear I see them back in the Bowl, now can Tampa hold serve?

  10. The Pats caught breaks with fluke turnovers against SD and Buffalo – they have no business even being in the playoff conversation, and if they even make the playoffs will be bounced immediately. Mac is a good QB but has been exposed enough now for any needed adjustments by the league as happens with otherwise new QBs, that ship has sailed. BB will follow his pattern as a head coach with an overall losing record without Brady moving forward…this is a known quantity. Nice little run, but it’s over now.

  11. Seriously? They got their butts handed to them and he wants to blame it on practice? Just man up and say we got beat in every phase and will learn from it and move on, that’s it. Bill is on to next week already I’m sure.

  12. Here’s a reality check on last night’s game.

Taylor is a great player who can both run tough and cut back. The Colts OL compliments him well.

The Colts came out ready to play and the Patriots didn’t.

The Patriots were heavily penalized and deserved them. Virtually every penalty hurt them. The penalty on the missed field goal let the Colts rekick and go up 20-0. Absent that play and absent Reich changing his approach given a smaller lead, the Pats 17 point 4th quarter would have tied the game and Belichick doesn’t risk 10 in the box with 2:01 on the clock.

Reich coached a great game. The Patriots didn’t quit and made it interesting.

  13. The pats showed up flat but never quit mac led them and they cut the lead to 20-17 they just have to start faster and match the opponents intensity they will be fine.

The only reason it wasn’t a shutout is the bogus ejection of the Colts player after the fight changing the momentum of that scoring drive. Pats are a .500 caliber team at best and will be until BB is fired as he was in Cleveland.

Brady proved beyond a doubt last night that without Belichick to hide his weaknesses and without an all star team around him he is a worse QB than Taysom Hill. Let that sink in.

Definitely changed my perception of him. It’s funny how Aaron Rodgers had no receivers against a top team like the Cardinals and he still beat them. Definitely didn’t look completely inept like Tampa Bay Tommy did last night, throwing more microsoft tablets than TD passes.

That’s the so called GOAT huh? I thought he was – now I’m not so sure anymore.

I’ll admit his little temper tantrum to the Saints coaching staff was adorable 🙂

  16. Mac Jones on Saturday night: 74 passer rating
Tampa Bay Tommy career vs Patriots: 71 rating

Tampa Bay Tommy lovers will of course make fun of Mac’s passer rating but will talk up Brady’s “win” in week 4 like he singlehandedly beat his old team. 😂😂😂😂😂😂

Right and also first and goal from the 2 became 4th and goal from the 7 because of penalty and BB goes FG. Rightfully so, but a different decision would be made if they didn’t move backwards and who knows maybe they get in.

This is what happens when you’re not disciplined. I expect that shouldn’t be a problem this weekend against the Bills in a much bigger game than what they played on Saturday.
