Sunday Night Football: Saints stun Buccaneers with dominant 9-0 victory

USA TODAY Sports

For whatever reason, the Saints continue to be a bad matchup for the Buccaneers in the regular season.

Even without head coach Sean Payton, who missed the game after testing positive for COVID-19, New Orleans used a dominant defensive performance to defeat the Buccaneers 9-0 on Sunday.

Quarterback Tom Brady hadn’t been shut out in 255 consecutive starts. The last time it happened was back in 2006 when the Patriots lost to the Dolphins.

Brady finished the game 26-of-48 for 214 yards with a lost fumble and a fourth-quarter interception with 3:47 left in the contest. He was hit a total of seven times.

It was a banner day for defensive coordinator Dennis Allen, who also served as the acting head coach with Payton out. The Buccaneers averaged just 4.1 yards on 73 total plays.

Defensive end Cam Jordan, who missed the Saints’ last game while on the COVID-19 list, led the way with 2.0 sacks, getting a total of three quarterback hits and another couple of tackles for loss. New Orleans had a total of six tackles for loss in the contest.

Offensively, the Saints didn’t get much from quarterback Taysom Hill or running back Alvin Kamara. But they did get enough to win. Hill was 13-of-27 passing for 154 yards also taking 11 carries for 33 yards. Kamara had 18 yards on 11 carries plus two catches for 13 yards.

Receiver Marquez Callaway caught six passes for 112 yards to lead the team and lead the game.

Though Tampa Bay will welcome back receiver Antonio Brown on Monday after his three-game suspension, the offense lost several key players during the game. Receivers Mike Evans (hamstring) and Chris Godwin (knee) exited the game and didn’t return in the first half. Then running back Leonard Fournette (hamstring) left the game in the third quarter. Those absences were significant, but New Orleans’ defense was effective even when those players were on the field.

The Buccaneers would have won the NFC South title with a victory. Instead, that will have to wait at least another week. At 10-4, Tampa Bay plays the Panthers, Jets, and Panthers to finish the 2021 season.

At 7-7, the Saints are still in playoff contention. They will be at home against the Dolphins and Panthers, and on the road against the Falcons to end the year.

  1. This is why Brady isn’t the MVP (or GOAT). Take away his weapons and he is nothing.

He simply can’t score at all.

  2. Seeing the All-American Boy acting like a five-year-old brat near the end was a Cherry on top of a lovely day of football.

  3. Best NFL season in my lifetime.

The “experts” get it wrong on predicting games every single weekend.

Is there ONE NFL fan that would bet $1000 on ANY one team winning the Super Bowl right now at this moment?

    Nope.

  4. “It’s all Tom” 🙂

This shows that even these GOAT qbs need weapons, they don’t do it all alone.Yet the praise they get when things going well you’d think they do it all alone run, catch, block etx.

Had this been Mahomes or Lamar in low scoring game, they would have been roasted and no excuses for them.Yet likes of Brady get excuses.

  5. How many fantasy points did Brady create??? Ha ha ha ha ha ha! Collinsworth would not shut up “I cannot emphasize enough that Tom doesn’t have all his weapons!” Yeah, lots of guys don’t have their full compliment of receivers, and don’t get shut out on national TV. Credit Dennis Allen and that Saints D. End of story.

  6. Brady haters so desperate for anything, the best they can do is a random week 15 loss? 7 rings and you’re still trying to convince people that a 44 year old QB is not a good QB? I’m not even a Brady fan, it’s just embarrassing to watch people go quiet until he has a bad game and then suddenly the haters come out.

  7. Tom had no weapons against NO.

Rodgers had no weapons against AZ on a short week.

    Who won their game?

  8. If this game didn’t yet convince you that these games are all scripted, just wait until the playoffs again. This same Bucs team is repeating. Just look at the numbers on full display.

Who says he isn’t good? I said he’s not MVP or the GOAT. I
Should have added that he is a known cheater.

  10. Tom looked 44 tonight. And what was the narrative those New England Patriot fans always bragged about Tom? Oh yea, he can turn nobodies into superstars. Hahaha

  11. Taysom strolled in and dropped a 9 bomb on the defending Champs! Ahhhhhahahahaha!

  12. I have no skin in the game (except my team did beat the GOAT in the SuperBowl..so).. to the TB12 haters stop ripping a 44 yr old QB who lost a game with 3 of his 4 starting weapons gone. He did win the Bowl just last yr. He is also still in the MVP conversion. But if the MVP really means most valuable player to his team. The Jonathan Taylor is MVP

  13. Now what was it I was trying to tell you buckaroos during the preseason??? The Saints still Own the Buccaneers

  14. New Orleans was missing far more pieces on offense that TB. Not sure why Brady not having all his “weapons” is tossed out there as an excuse.

  15. Brady is still within the top 5 QBs and is effectively an on field coach. Even as good as Brady still is, Arians is simply not as good at getting optimal results out of the rest of the team’s talent over the course of a season as Belichick is. It’s far more noticeable this year when the top players aren’t able to be on the field, and Arians has to work with 2nds and 3rds.

  16. Not a fan, but great job Saints. Dennis Allen knows how to shut down the “Precious”….. hit him.

  17. Tom had no weapons against NO.

Rodgers had no weapons against AZ on a short week.

    Who won their game

Rogers threw for less than 15O yards completed less than 60 % of his passes and didn’t complete a pass for more than 10 yards in the air.

They won that game because they rushed for over 150 yards and the D saved them with a pick in the end zone as to end it

Don’t act like that was done heroic effort by Rogers.

They have been doing it for 20 years.
They get a handful of games every season and they pounce
    Then they disappear again.

  20. He lost all his weapons during the game and the rest of the team appeared to droo everything or move slow. Will rebound soon. Hill had a better game than the stats show he had a ton of drops also

  21. This is why Brady isn’t the MVP (or GOAT). Take away his weapons and he is nothing.

    ____

Remember week 1 when these same saints beat the Packers 38-3, and Rodgers went 15-28 for 133 yards and 2 picks? And he had ALL his weapons that day. I guess hes not MVP or GOAT material either.

  22. Brady’s the GOAT, it’s not even close. You have to be a real hater to not be able to admit it.
This game came down to defense and the Saints D was the better last night, but if you think the Saints are going anywhere you’re out of your mind.
Lions best the Cards yesterday, but It doesn’t mean much other than the Cardinals are a bit overrated.
Still, the Cards will be in the playoffs and the Lions won’t.

  23. Watching Brady everything is about timing more than his weapons available. If you can pressure him to the point it disrupts the WR routes, he curls up. You go down your top RB, play action doesn’t have the same bite. Drop your top 2 WR’s, now you are throwing to some players you haven’t thrown to all week.

Tom still can throw, but it is more his subtle pocket moves and ability to read the defense that has carried his play into his 40’s. He isn’t creating yards off broken plays. If his receivers time their routes right, make the play and the line holds up, he is as good as any QB in the leauge. When that doesn’t happen, he looks very average at best.

  24. BA doesn’t have the feel for the game like BB, should have understood that it was going to be a low scoring game. Started with 10 straight pass attempts, no balance. How frustrating must it be for the Bucs’ defense to lose the game after holding the opponent to a single digit score.

The receivers are taking too many unnecessary hits, Gronk broke his ribs against Rams in the last 2 mins of the game down by 3 scores.

  25. Nobody mentions that Arians said AB would be let go if any shenanigans were to appear. Now he’s hoping everyone forgets what he said. Two-facedness is rampant across all walks of life.

  26. Good for NO – they played really hard and earned their victory. But I guess I don’t know that I feel it was “dominant”. I don’t know what was going on with the Bucs in the 2nd half, but man did they drop a lot of passes.

I’m not taking anything away from the Saints – they got after Brady all night. But that game was always within reach for the Bucs until the very end.

  27. This game came down to defense and the Saints D was the better last night, but if you think the Saints are going anywhere you’re out of your mind.
    ==========

They absolutely dominated a team many thought was the best team in the NFC. They also smeared the Packers week 1.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Saints won a Playoff game.

  28. TOM DIDN”T HAVE HIS WEAPONS!!! TOM DIDN”T HAVE HIS WEAPONS!!! Uhhh….Fournette, Godwin & Evans all started the game. The Bucs didn’t score any points while they were healthy either. So that excuse doesn’t cut it. I will give Tom some credit for at least shaking hands after the game. Usually he runs off like a petulant child.

  29. Determining someone is the greatest of all time is impossible. Why? Because the way the rules have been changed, quarterbacks are so protected now, unlike the days of Huff, Starr, Unitas, etc. Back then the quarterback was fair game, hits allowed then would draw a flag or even disqualification now. Brady is good no doubt, but greatest? Impossible to determine.

  30. I have no skin in the game (except my team did beat the GOAT in the SuperBowl..so).. to the TB12 haters stop ripping a 44 yr old QB who lost a game with 3 of his 4 starting weapons gone.

    No room for excuses.

Leftwich and Brady are the ones calling the game..

BA is in a great position, he can just assign blame and throw Brady under the train.

  32. That NO’s defensive line played a great game. They got to Brady a few times and he was rattled. I’m sure Brady is above-average athletic for 44, but against NFL players he looks super slow. When he tried to scramble for a first down it looked wide open. 2 defenders caught him in a heartbeat and stripped the ball. That was the Bucs best chance at 3 points. Brady should go back to the fetal position under pressure routine he’s been using for 10+ years.

  33. Huh. Take away Tampa Bay Tommy’s all star receivers and he becomes a worse QB than Taysom Hill. Who knew?

  34. Rogers threw for less than 15O yards completed less than 60 % of his passes and didn’t complete a pass for more than 10 yards in the air.

Great defense.. doing just enough to win games… you just described the first decade of Bradys career!

  35. The game was awful for the Bucs, no doubt about it. The offense just couldn’t make things happen. On the defensive side… I have not seen such blatant holding from NO in a long time. Right there on the TV, dude is grabbing both shoulder pads under the jersey, time and time again. No calls. It’s the arbitrary nature of refs that makes me angry. Call everything to the letter of the rule or just don’t call anything.

Why is it those “announcers” fail to mention that The Saints are playing with a 2nd string QB due to the Bucs putting Winston out for the season a while back with an illegal horse collar tackle. So The Saints are without their #1 QB, their #1 Left Guard, LT, RT, WR and Head Coach. We a’int shedding no tears for Tom and the Brady Bunch. They did not score a single point on our D. I feel sorry for Gisele and the kids today.

  37. While I’m sure the Saint’s D are all in their respective tubs this morning, they were INCREDIBLE last night. Offense had many 3 and outs and those guys looked as fresh in the 4th as they did in the 3rd! Way to bring the wood!

  38. LOL whining about not having weapons. Yeah, try a month or two of Trevor Siemian and Taysom Hill throwing to Marquez Callaway, Kevin White, LilJordan Humphrey and Adam Trautman and whine about weapons missing.

And how. Lifelong Packer here fan and they are arguably the best team in the NFC, but I would still hesitate long and hard to put any money on them (or anybody else).

Yet another FALSE narrative by the Brady haters.
True for his first season after that completely false.

  41. Lions beat Arizona too.
Sometimes really bad teams beat good teams. It happens. It means nothing in the long term, and if your team scored 9 whole points, I wouldn’t be puffing my chest out. Be thankful your team is somehow in the playoff hunt, and realize the severe limitations your team has.

Double standard, I know. Not sure why I bother.

Only Brady deserves credit for winning unimpressive 17-14 games. Other QBs just played poorly.
