Josh McDaniels: “Bit of a tug of war” playing Bills twice in a short period

The Patriots came up with the right offensive plan to beat the Bills on a blustery night in Buffalo in Week 13, but doing the same thing again this Sunday won’t guarantee them anything.

Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels said this week that “the biggest mistake people can make is relaxing and not going through the preparation as if this is the first time we played them.” McDaniels said that the run-heavy approach from the previous meeting — Mac Jones attempted three passes — is “definitely a starting point” but it can’t be the end point because you have to expect the opposition to adjust.

“Whenever you play a division opponent this close together there’s always a bit of a tug of war,” McDaniels said, via the team’s website. “You may have had success with something and then you say, ‘We’ve got to do this again, right?’ But the other team knows you had success with it so they try to stop it, they may do some things differently, play it differently.”

While the Patriots are unlikely to be as ground-focused as they were last time, teams have had success running the ball on the Bills throughout the season and they’re likely to force the Bills to stop them before moving too far in the other direction on offense.

  1. The Bills are still a super soft team. They fold when punched in the mouth. Their only quality win is early Chiefs who were trying to find themselves offensively. Just run the ball Josh.

  2. NE is lower in the standing when it comes to winning % of the teams they beat. I mean except for 1 play last game they were shut down. Of course this week we know darn well the refs will be on the NE sideline like they always are, but I think the Bills can beat both of them.

  3. Not a fan of the scheduling, but it’s cool to have the division still up for grabs this late in the season (that wasn’t really the way for quite a few years there).

Should be a great game, considering the stakes. 2 completely different teams – one more D and run, one more pass & high-scoring.

The Bills are more talented overall, but Belichick is the great equalizer. He always has a good gameplan for the circumstances.

The ref excuses before the game .. SMH

  5. It’s funny that someone brings up the refs before the game considering the officiating in the last game was decidedly in Buffalo’s favor…

One call was questionable – the roughing on Allen. By the rules, it was legit.

But what’s funny is when Patriots fans complain about calls like that – after 2 decades of Brady-led teams getting pretty much every call in every game.
