After 1-7 start, Dolphins control their playoff destiny

At the end of October, the Dolphins were 1-7 and making the playoffs seemed like an impossible task. But after a six-game winning streak got them to 7-7, the playoffs are a very realistic possibility.

In fact, the Dolphins’ path to the playoffs is simple: Win their final three games, and they’re in the playoffs.

That starts tonight against the Saints, where the Dolphins are favored to win thanks to a New Orleans COVID-19 outbreak that left the team down to rookie Ian Book at quarterback.

After tonight, the Dolphins are at Tennessee next week and then close the season at home against the Patriots. The Dolphins will likely be underdogs in both of those games, but winning both is not out of the question.

The Dolphins have benefited from a much easier schedule in November and December than they had in September and October, and the Saints’ quarterback situation made the schedule easier still. But they’ve won the games they needed to win, and they’re three more wins away from a remarkable turnaround to a season that once looked lost.

  1. This team still is flawed and has major holes on offense(and offensive coaching) and needs better LB play. But it’s been fun to watch the past 7 weeks and I’ll enjoy the rest of this season even if I know they have no real shot at the Super Bowl…

  2. It always puzzles me when writers say Miami only won games because of the opponents have been losing teams. These are all professional football teams so any given Sunday anything can happen.
If I recall correctly Buffalo lost to Jax. Chargers lost to Houston and there are plenty more of those scenarios just like it yet you never see the writers talk about Pats or Buffalo and games they won against the same opponents. Miami has had more distractions this season (all the Watson talk that was mostly promoted by the media) then most other teams in the league. Tua had almost a career ending injury in college and came in last season with zero training camp and still not 100 percent healthy yet still played decent. And this season he has the league best completion percentage and for those that say all short passes you may want to check the stats because Brady, Allen and many others that are put high on the throne all have the identical yards per pass average.
Give Miami some credit for what they are doing for a change please!!

  3. Give me a break. Beating paper tigers or bad teams is not very impressive.

    Should have started 0-8.

  4. All season the lingering question has been, is Ian Book the best QB the saints have on their roster!

    Let’s stop deceiving everyone:
Winston was never trustworthy with the passing game…
Siemian is a career backup for a reason….
Hill is a gimmick qb at best….

Maybe Sean lives up to being the qb coach people make him out to be and Book earns the job for next year… Dolphins will win but hopefully Book at least plays well!

  5. They’re definitely trending in the right direction which is a big surprise. Good for them.

  6. Lots of people were writing off Tua too early. He’s progressing and the Dolphins are winning. They’re showing promise, and didn’t have to pay a ransom for Watson after all.

  7. Poor Tua he could lead the Dolphins to the playoffs this season and still get dumped for Deshaun Watson next year.

Yea but they didn’t, they stripped the ball from NE running back ans won the game.
Now on the other side of this, has Jason Sanders of 2020 been kicking in 2021 Miami would have 9 or 10 wins right now. Lost atleast 2 games from missed extra point and FG late in the games they lost.

  9. Tua is the best young QB in the AFC. Everyone is going to see that tonight. This will put to bed the Tua/Herbert debate.

  10. They have won six games in a row, they beat Houston, the Jets, Carolina, the Giants, and the Jets. They had one good win when they beat the ravens. Give them credit for winning those games, but those are not the teams that they will be playing in the playoffs if they make the playoffs.

  11. The Dolphins are going to win their first Super Bowl since 1973, the stars have aligned.

  12. Congrats on the 6 game winning streak but they also had a 7 game losing streak which is not indicative of a super bowl caliber team.

  13. They were handed a Saints team who is down to it’s 4th QB, everyone is on covid or IR list.

Not entirely sure how this didn’t justify a reschedule but we all know that Goodell pretty much hates the Saints because they won’t kiss his backside.

Didnt know that but yeah, thats a pretty weak “run”. And now they get the Saints with Ian Book, Hell they’ll probably win this one too. Id expect Tennessee to thump them next week but with NFL covid rules who knows.

  15. We did the same thing last year and came into this season with high hopes. Pretty amazing that a team that lost 7 straight now controls their own destiny. Not sure about history but how many teams have had a 7 game losing streak and 7 game winning streak in the same season? Pretty incredible regardless of who they are playing.

  16. The Dolphins need a couple more pieces on the offensive line and a good offensive line coach and they’ll be really good.

  17. Everyone knew the schedule long ago. Miami issue was the crappy start, where most thought a 3-3 start was possible.

The Saints defense is keeping themselves in the game tonight. Exposing the MIA oline and stuffing the run.

MIA is fighting for this win, because NO and their HC wouldn’t do anything less.

  18. Flores is a bad – horrible head coach and good defensive coordinator. What head coach would not have had a play called so when the review is done they would be ready to run the play. Instead he called a time out but was given it back by our part time officials

  19. Oh, please, when the Carolina Paper Tigers went to the Snoopy Bowl, they feasted on beating 13 games with teams with losing records. They were truly not good and Cam Cheating was consistently overrated. The Dolphins are merely doing what Carolina did.

  20. Miami is very capable of winning these next two games, defense is so much better and offensive play calling has got better as well..
