Since Kyle Shanahan revealed at his Monday media availability that Jimmy Garoppolo sprained his right thumb, the news continues to get worse. Shortly after the 49ers coach made his announcement, Adam Schefter of ESPN reported Garoppolo had a “more significant injury” than a sprain.

Now comes a report from Ian Rapoport of NFL Media that Garoppolo has a chipped bone and torn ligament in his throwing thumb.

Garoppolo did not practice Monday.

Rookie Trey Lance will start if Garoppolo can’t go against the Texans on Sunday. The third overall choice has not thrown a pass since his Oct. 10 start against the Cardinals when he injured a knee.

The last time he played was Nov. 21 when Lance took five snaps in mop-up duty against the Jaguars.

  1. As a 49er fan, I’m excited to see Trey Lance but ONLY if we let him run the real offense. If Kyle makes him a defacto running back again…

  2. Third QB this year with a hand injury. I bet Ravems submit a propoal that all defensive players must be wrapped in foam to protect QBs from injury.

  3. Dang if only they had a 1st round QB that they mortgaged the next 3 years for ready to step in…

  4. Oh wait… he’s not an interception machine anymore, but he IS still made of ceramics. Thanks for the clarification Niners!

  5. I’m already concerned thinking of how badly Lynch and Shanahan messed up that pick… it will be on full display this weekend.

  6. Jimmy G should be done but I wouldn’t be surprised if Shanahan (for reasons only he understands) continues to insist on playing him.

Never mind that he also had 29!passing attempts that game.

  8. This is a fake injury, look at his post game presser. JimmyG is using his right thumb just fine. All of this is a ruse by Shanahan to let Garappolo save face so that the 49ers can transition to Lance. It’s Kyle’s gift and thank you to Garappolo.

  9. Wonder if Shanahan is ruing that moment when he mortgaged the farm to pick Mac Jones and gave the wrong card to the runner when the 49ers were on the clock.

  10. That explains the interceptions.

Garoppolo doesn’t know when to remove himself from a game. He thinks he’s being tough, but he’s only hurting the team.

  11. This isn’t the NBA where you can’t move off of bad contracts. Move him and get on with your life. He’s never going to not be hurt in some way

  12. I know that Garoppolo has availability issuses, but how can the guy throw the ball properly with a torn up thumb on his right hand?
