Eagles radio crew skipped trip to FedEx Field because it’s a “dump”

USA TODAY Sports

The Eagles played Washington at FedEx Field on Sunday. The visiting team’s radio crew opted not to call the game from the venue, but from monitors at another location.

Via Rob Tornoe of the Philadelphia Inquirer, the move had nothing to do with the ongoing pandemic. Instead, the broadcasters didn’t go because they “hate” FedEx Field. Play-by-play announcer Merrill Reese regards it as a “dump.”

The team’s radio announcers, Merrill Reese and Mike Quick, personally attended only the road games against the Giants and Jets. Presumably, they would have gone to Washington — if the place wasn’t indeed a dump.

And it is a dump, in my opinion. My opinion arises from the fact that I’ve been there to experience it. Although, thankfully, there were no railing collapses or sewage-line ruptures during my visit to the place that became an unexpected health hazard to players and fans on Sunday.

  1. Time for Washington’s team to get a new name, a new stadium, and most importantly, a new owner.

  2. But Buffalo needs a new stadium and if they don’t build it they will move. whatever

  3. Right. Calling a stadium a “dump” but then complaining and whining about a “waste of money” when a team looks to build a new stadium…

  4. FedEx Field has always been awful in every way. Come to think of it, so has that entire organization.

  5. 1997: FedEx Field opens. Now a “dump”.

1998: Raymond James Stadium opens. Still one of the best stadiums in the league.

What a difference a year makes, I guess.

  6. Am I crazy or do I remember correctly that FedEx Field was a big deal in the 90s because it was team-owned, made them the first billion dollar franchise, and gave them a path to future sustainability? A couple dozen NFL team-owned stadiums later, I guess it doesn’t matter that the whole thing was a scam because the taxpayers’ money is already spent.

  7. I haven’t been to a game in a couple of years, but I can say that trying to use the restroom if you are on the lower level, is a freaking nightmare. Lines about 15 deep just to use a urinal. Women were coming in our restroom because the lines were too long for the ladies in their own. No team has needed a new stadium more. Even the team facilities are atrocious. This is what happens when you have an owner that is terrible.

  8. From the beginning, I hated the aesthetics of that awful stadium – a giant outdoor Costco.

  9. “The team’s radio announcers, Merrill Reese and Mike Quick, personally attended only the road games against the Giants and Jets. ” So the only stadium that isn’t a dump is the Meadowlands? That said, living in Philly they definitely know a dump when they see one.
