There’s one way that a Chargers-Raiders tie gets both team into the playoffs

Yes, the 2021 season will end with a playoff play-in game between the Chargers and Raiders. Unless it doesn’t.

There’s one specific scenario that gets both participants in the Week 18 Sunday night game into the postseason field. And it’s not all that complicated.

If the Steelers beat the Browns tonight and the Ravens in Baltimore on Sunday and if the Jaguars beat the Colts in Jacksonville, a Chargers-Raiders tie gets both AFC West rivals into the postseason field.

Don’t expect any type of deal between the two teams that would entail 70 minutes worth of victory formation aimed at engineering a tie, or something more subtle. The league office prohibits such efforts to undermine the integrity of the game, and there surely would be hell to pay if it looked like the teams were deemed to be colluding to ensure mutual playoff appearances. The Commissioner’s powers in that regard presumably would include imposing a double forfeit, which would keep both of them out of the postseason.

Still, whether they try to do it or not, a Week 18 tie could result in both teams getting a seat at the seven-team AFC postseason table.

  1. The Raiders and Chargers wouldn’t engineer a tie…..but those Zebras could. Ben doing nutty stuff all season.

  2. At that point wouldn’t a strength of schedule or points total determine the winner? There was tie breaker in the previous format that should have been included

  3. Colts aren’t losing but it would be cool to see a close game and a team kneel 3 times in OT with the game tied. Tie and you’re in means they can do this in OT instead of driving to win if it is possible.

  4. That’s actually a bet worth throwing a hundred dollars at just to see if it actually happened. If any combination of teams could pull off something that ridiculous it’s probably all of them.

  5. Wait, so finish the scenario. Who gets if Oakland and San Diego get double forfeited?

Probably Colts/Steelers and Cleveland or the Ravens. But would be funny to put the Jags in for making it all possible.

  7. I would love to see the Jags beat the Colts. Nothing against the Colts, but the Jags beating anyone would be a total hoot.

Getting both teams to agree to a tie is like getting two accused criminals to refuse to speak. Odds are one will take the plea bargain and testify against the other, i.e. one of these teams would break a tie agreement to get the other eliminated.

  8. Even if they cant collude for a tie, it changes strategy. If a tie is much worse than a loss, they would be less likely to attempt a 2 point conversion late to win instead of tie late, or to go for it on 4th down in overtime rather than punt. If the game is close late, both teams could play more of a defensive field position style without colluding, just acting on their individual interests.

well they did beat the Dolphins and Bills this year, but that was a while ago.

  10. 0-0 tie, while resting starters. You’d both get a bye. Do it! If teams with comfortable leads/#1 seeds can take players out, why can’t the 6/7seeds?

  11. The Steelers factor in because a Colts loss puts them at 9-8. The Raiders, Chargers and Steelers would all be 9-7-1 and be ahead of the Colts.
